In the cultural context of ancient Israel, lamps were small clay vessels filled with oil and a wick. Covering a lamp would defeat its purpose, just as hiding the truth of the Gospel would be contrary to its intent. The imagery of light is often used in Scripture to represent truth, knowledge, and the presence of God (Psalm 119:105, John 8:12). The act of lighting a lamp signifies the revelation of divine truth, which should not be concealed.
or puts it under a bed
Placing a lamp under a bed would not only hide its light but also pose a fire hazard, illustrating the absurdity of such an action. Beds in the first-century Jewish context were simple mats or low platforms, making this imagery relatable to Jesus' audience. This phrase underscores the importance of allowing the light of the Gospel to shine openly, as hiding it would be both impractical and dangerous to spiritual growth. The metaphor suggests that believers are called to actively share their faith, not keep it hidden.
Instead, he sets it on a stand
Setting a lamp on a stand maximizes its ability to illuminate the surrounding area, symbolizing the believer's responsibility to live out and proclaim the Gospel. In Matthew 5:14-16, Jesus similarly calls His followers the "light of the world," urging them to let their light shine before others. The stand represents a position of visibility and influence, encouraging Christians to be bold in their witness and to use their God-given platforms to spread His truth.
so those who enter can see the light
The purpose of placing the lamp on a stand is so that all who enter can benefit from its light. This reflects the inclusive nature of the Gospel, intended for all people (Matthew 28:19-20). The light serves as guidance and revelation, drawing others to the truth of Christ. This phrase highlights the transformative power of the Gospel, which, when shared openly, can lead others to salvation and a deeper understanding of God's kingdom. The imagery of light guiding those who enter aligns with the prophetic vision of the nations coming to the light of God's people (Isaiah 60:1-3).
Persons / Places / Events
1. Jesus Christ
The speaker of this parable, Jesus uses everyday imagery to convey spiritual truths to His followers.

2. The Lamp
Represents the light of Christ and the truth of the Gospel, which should be visible and not hidden.

3. The Lampstand
Symbolizes the appropriate place for the light, indicating that the truth should be shared openly.

4. The Jar/Bed
Represents obstacles or actions that can hide the light, such as fear, sin, or neglect.

5. Those Who Enter
Symbolizes people who come into contact with believers and should be able to see the light of Christ through them.
Teaching Points
The Purpose of Light
The primary purpose of light is to illuminate and reveal. In St. Matthew the proverb comes into the Sermon on the Mount; in St. Mark it occupies a position analogous to that in which it stands here, and this agreement favours the view that it was actually spoken in connection with the interpretation of the parable, as a special application of what had before been stated generally.
Note St. Luke's more general term, "a vessel," instead of "the bushel," as in St. Matthew and St. Mark, and the somewhat wider range of the lamp's illumining power, not only to those who are "in the house," but to those also who are in the act of "entering" into it. We may, perhaps, venture to connect the choice of the latter phrase with St. Luke's personal experience as a convert from heathenism. As such, he had been among those that entered into the house; and as he did so, he had seen the light of the lamp which the Apostles of Christ had lighted.

Pulpit Commentary
Verses 16-18. - A solemn conclusion of the Lord's to his exposition of his first great parable. Verse 16. - No man, when he hath lighted a candle, covereth it with a vessel, or putteth it under a bed; but setteth it on a candlestick, that they which enter in may see the light. The meaning of the Lord's saying here is - the disciples must not look on this parable-method of teaching, which from henceforth he purposed frequently to adopt, as mysterious, or as containing anything beyond ordinary human comprehension. The explanation of "the sower," which he had just given them, showed them how really simple and adapted to everyday life his teaching was. "No man," said the Lord, "when he hath lighted the candle of the true knowledge, really wishes to hide it - he rather displays it that men may see the light; and that is what I have been doing for you in my careful explanation of my story."

Parallel Commentaries ...

Greek
No one
Οὐδεὶς (Oudeis)
Adjective - Nominative Masculine Singular
Strong's 3762: No one, none, nothing.

lights
ἅψας (hapsas)
Verb - Aorist Participle Active - Nominative Masculine Singular
Strong's 681: To kindle, light.
