The Hebrew root for "rejected" is "מאס" (ma'as), which means to despise or refuse. This reflects Job's introspective integrity, as he is considering whether he has ever dismissed the grievances of those under his authority. In the ancient Near Eastern context, servants had limited rights, and their complaints could easily be ignored by their masters. Job's reflection here is a testament to his righteousness and fairness, as he acknowledges the importance of listening to those who serve him.
the cause of my manservant or maidservant
The "cause" refers to the legal or moral claim or grievance brought forth by his servants. The Hebrew word "ריב" (riv) can mean a dispute or contention, suggesting a formal complaint. In Job's time, servants were often seen as property, yet Job elevates their status by considering their grievances seriously. This reflects a biblical principle of justice and equality, as seen in other scriptures that emphasize fair treatment of servants (e.g., Exodus 21:20-21). Job's attitude aligns with the broader biblical narrative that all people, regardless of social status, are made in the image of God and deserve justice.
when they made a complaint against me
The phrase "when they made a complaint against me" highlights the potential for servants to voice their grievances. The Hebrew word for "complaint" is "משפט" (mishpat), which often refers to judgment or justice. This implies a formal process of bringing a concern to light. Job's willingness to consider such complaints underscores his commitment to justice and righteousness. In a historical context, this is significant because it shows Job's counter-cultural approach to leadership and authority, where he is open to accountability and correction, even from those of lower status.
Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers
(13) If I did despise.--In Job 22:8, Eliphaz had insinuated that Job had favoured the rich and powerful, but had oppressed and ground down the weak. He now meets this accusation, and affirms that he had regarded his own servants even as brethren, because partakers of a common humanity.

Pulpit Commentary
Verse 13. - If I did despise the cause of my manservant or of my maidservant. Job now disclaims a fourth sin - the oppression of his dependants. Eliphaz had taxed him generally with harshness and cruelty in his relations towards those weaker than himself (Job 22:5-9), but had not specially pointed to this kind of oppressiveness. As, however, this was the commonest form of the vice, Job deems it right to disclaim it, before addressing himself to the several charges brought by Eliphaz. He has not ill used his slaves, either male or female. He has not "despised their cause," but given it full consideration and attention; he has heard them when they contended with him; he has allowed them to "contend;" he has been a just, and not a hard master. The slavery of which he speaks is evidently of a kind under which the slave had certain rights, as was the case also under the Mosaic Law (Exodus 21:2-11).

Parallel Commentaries ...

Hebrew
If
אִם־ (’im-)
Conjunction
Strong's 518: Lo!, whether?, if, although, Oh that!, when, not

I have rejected
אֶמְאַ֗ס (’em·’as)
Verb - Qal - Imperfect - first person common singular
Strong's 3988: To spurn, to disappear

the cause
מִשְׁפַּ֣ט (miš·paṭ)
Noun - masculine singular construct
Strong's 4941: A verdict, a sentence, formal decree, divine law, penalty, justice, privilege, style

of my manservant
עַ֭בְדִּי (‘aḇ·dî)
Noun - masculine singular construct |
