<t><p class="indent1">For the LORD has spoken: <p class="indent1stline">&#8220;I have reared and brought up sons, <t><p class="indent1">But they have rebelled against Me <i>and</i> have broken away. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/1-3.htm"><b>3</b></a></span>&#8220;The ox [instinctively] knows its owner, <t><p class="indent1">And the donkey its master&#8217;s feeding trough, <t><p class="indent1">But Israel does not know [Me as LORD], <t><p class="indent1">My people do not understand.&#8221; <poetry><p class="paragraph"><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/1-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>Ah, sinful nation, <t><p class="indent1">A people loaded down with wickedness [with sin, with injustice, with wrongdoing], <t><p class="indent1">Offspring of evildoers, <t><p class="indent1">Sons who behave corruptly! <t><p class="indent1">They have abandoned (rejected) the LORD, <t><p class="indent1">They have despised the Holy One of Israel [provoking Him to anger], <t><p class="indent1">They have turned away from Him. <poetry><p class="paragraph"><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/1-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>Why should you be stricken <i>and</i> punished again [since no change results from it]? <t><p class="indent1">You [only] continue to rebel. <t><p class="indent1">The whole head is sick <t><p class="indent1">And the whole heart is faint <i>and</i> sick. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/1-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>From the sole of the foot even to the head <t><p class="indent1">There is nothing healthy in the nation&#8217;s body, <t><p class="indent1">Only bruises, welts, and raw wounds, <t><p class="indent1">Not pressed out or bandaged, <t><p class="indent1">Nor softened with oil [as a remedy]. <poetry><p class="paragraph"><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/1-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>Your land lies desolate [because of your disobedience], <t><p class="indent1">Your cities are burned with fire, <t><p class="indent1">Your fields--strangers are devouring them in your very presence; <t><p class="indent1">It is desolate, as overthrown by strangers. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/1-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>The Daughter of Zion (Jerusalem) is left like a [deserted] shelter in a vineyard, <t><p class="indent1">Like a watchman&#8217;s hut in a cucumber field, like a besieged city [isolated, surrounded by devastation]. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/1-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>If the LORD of hosts <t><p class="indent1">Had not left us a few survivors, <t><p class="indent1">We would be like Sodom, <t><p class="indent1">We would be like Gomorrah. <p class="hdg">God Has Had Enough</p><poetry><p class="paragraph"><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/1-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>Hear the word of the LORD [rulers of Jerusalem], <t><p class="indent1">You rulers of [another] Sodom, <t><p class="indent1">Listen to the law <i>and</i> instruction of our God, <t><p class="indent1">You people of [another] Gomorrah. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/1-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>&#8220;What are your multiplied sacrifices to Me [without your repentance]?&#8221; <t><p class="indent1">Says the LORD. <t><p class="indent1">&#8220;I have had enough of [your] burnt offerings of rams <t><p class="indent1">And the fat of well-fed cattle [without your obedience]; <t><p class="indent1">And I take no pleasure in the blood of bulls or lambs or goats [offered without repentance]. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/1-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>&#8220;When you come to appear before Me, <t><p class="indent1">Who requires this of you, this trampling of My [temple] courts [by your sinful feet]? <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/1-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>&#8220;Do not bring worthless offerings again, <t><p class="indent1">[Your] incense is repulsive to Me; <t><p class="indent1">[Your] New Moon and Sabbath [observances], the calling of assemblies-- <t><p class="indent1">I cannot endure wickedness [your sin, your injustice, your wrongdoing] and [the squalor of] the festive assembly. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/1-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>&#8220;I hate [the hypocrisy of] your New Moon festivals and your appointed feasts. <t><p class="indent1">They have become a burden to Me; <t><p class="indent1">I am weary of bearing them. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/1-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>&#8220;So when you spread out your hands [in prayer, pleading for My help], <t><p class="indent1">I will hide My eyes from you; <t><p class="indent1">Yes, even though you offer many prayers, <t><p class="indent1">I will not be listening. <t><p class="indent1">Your hands are full of blood! <poetry><p class="paragraph"><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/1-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>&#8220;Wash yourselves, make yourselves clean; <t><p class="indent1">Get your evil deeds out of My sight. <t><p class="indent1">Stop doing evil, <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/1-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>Learn to do good. <t><p class="indent1">Seek justice, <t><p class="indent1">Rebuke the ruthless, <t><p class="indent1">Defend the fatherless, <t><p class="indent1">Plead for the [rights of the] widow [in court]. <p class="hdg">&#8220;Let Us Reason&#8221;</p><poetry><p class="paragraph"><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/1-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>&#8220;Come now, and let us reason together,&#8221; <t><p class="indent1">Says the LORD. <t><p class="indent1">&#8220;<span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[a]</a></span>Though your sins are like scarlet, <t><p class="indent1">They shall be as white as snow; <t><p class="indent1">Though they are red like crimson, <t><p class="indent1">They shall be like wool. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/1-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>&#8220;If you are willing and obedient, <t><p class="indent1">You shall eat the best of the land; <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/1-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>But if you refuse and rebel, <t><p class="indent1">You shall be devoured by the sword.&#8221; <t><p class="indent1">For the mouth of the LORD has spoken. <p class="hdg">Zion Corrupted, to Be Redeemed</p><poetry><p class="paragraph"><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/1-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>How the faithful city has become a prostitute [idolatrous, despicable], <t><p class="indent1">She who was full of justice! <t><p class="indent1">Right standing with God once lodged in her, <t><p class="indent1">But now murderers. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/1-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>Your silver has turned to <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[b]</a></span>lead, <t><p class="indent1">Your wine is diluted with water. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/1-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>Your rulers are rebels <t><p class="indent1">And companions of thieves; <t><p class="indent1">Everyone loves bribes <t><p class="indent1">And chases after gifts. <t><p class="indent1">They do not defend the fatherless, <t><p class="indent1">Nor does the widow&#8217;s cause come before them [instead they delay or turn a deaf ear]. <poetry><p class="paragraph"><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/1-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>Therefore the Lord GOD of hosts, <t><p class="indent1">The Mighty One of Israel, declares: <p class="indent1stline">&#8220;Ah, I will be freed of My adversaries <t><p class="indent1">And avenge Myself on My enemies. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/1-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>&#8220;And I will turn My hand against you, <t><p class="indent1">And will [thoroughly] purge away your dross as with lye <t><p class="indent1">And remove all your tin (impurity). <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/1-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>&#8220;Then I will restore your judges as at the first, <t><p class="indent1">And your counselors as at the beginning; <t><p class="indent1">Afterward you will be called the city of righteousness, <t><p class="indent1">The faithful city.&#8221; <poetry><p class="paragraph"><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/1-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span>Zion will be redeemed with justice <t><p class="indent1">And her repentant ones with righteousness. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/1-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span>But rebels and sinners will be crushed <i>and</i> destroyed together, <t><p class="indent1">And those who abandon (turn away from) the LORD will be consumed (perish). <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/1-29.htm"><b>29</b></a></span>For you will be ashamed [of the degradation] of the oaks in which you took [idolatrous] pleasure, <t><p class="indent1">And you will be ashamed of the gardens [of passion] which you have chosen [for pagan worship]. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/1-30.htm"><b>30</b></a></span>For you will be like an oak whose leaf withers <i>and</i> dies <t><p class="indent1">And like a garden that has no water. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/1-31.htm"><b>31</b></a></span>The strong man will become tinder, <t><p class="indent1">And his work a spark. <t><p class="indent1">So both will burn together <t><p class="indent1">And there will be none to quench them.<A name="fn"></a></p><br /><br /><span class="footnotesbot">[a]</span> <span class="fnverse">18</span> There was a legend among the rabbis that on the Day of Atonement a scarlet woolen thread was tied to the door of the temple, and when the scapegoat reached the wilderness (Lev 16:10), if the sins of Israel were forgiven the thread would miraculously turn white.<br><span class="footnotesbot">[b]</span> <span class="fnverse">22</span> Lit <i>galena</i>.<br></div><br /><div id="botbox"><div class="padbot"><div align="center">Amplified Bible Copyright &copy;
