The purpose of the mission is to review the EU development portfolio in the country, especially in the context of the current programming period.</div><br /><div><p>The mission will particularly focus on:</p> <p>- human development issues: the country suffers very high levels of poverty and social inequality (especially in rural and indigenous areas), chronic child malnutrition and violence against women, which represent major obstacles for the development of the country;</p><p> - the consequences of climate change which causes recurrent humanitarian disasters that trigger displacement and counteract the country's development efforts. On 17 October, the AFET and DEVE committees met again to narrow down the list of nominees to a three-candidate shortlist, via a secret vote.</div><br /><div><p></p><p>The three finalists are:</p><p> </p><ul class="list_inbox"> <li><li>Dr Gubad Ibadoghlu, academic and anti-corruption activist in Azerbaijan;</li><li>María Corina Machado, as leader of the democratic forces in Venezuela and President-elect Edmundo González Urrutia, representing all Venezuelans inside and outside the country fighting to restore freedom and democracy;</li><li>"Women Wage Peace" and "Women of the Sun", Israel/Palestine.</li></li> </ul><p>Each year the Sakharov Prize reaffirms the European Parliament's unwavering commitment to the protection and promotion of human rights, a founding principle of the European Union. The winning 2024 laureate(s) will be announced on 24 October by the Conference of Presidents (EP President and political group leaders) and an exchange of views with the laureate(s) will take place in a joint Committee meeting on 16 December.
