<div class="singlepage"> <h1>Regulation on Smart Grids</h1> <div class="drdot"> <hr/> </div> <div class="node"> <div class="content"> <p> <font color="#c93e1f"><b>Regulatory incentives for Smart Grids deployment</b></font></p> <p class="rtejustify"> There is wide agreement among investors that the regulatory framework needs to be conducive to investment in Smart Grids. The Electricity Directive and the Energy Services Directive provide a mix of obligations and incentives to Member States to establish such a framework. Regulatory incentives should encourage a network operator to earn revenue in ways that are not linked to additional sales.</p> <p class="rtejustify"> The Electricity Directive requires Member States to define, no later than 3 September 2012, an implementation plan and timetable for the roll-out of smart metering systems. Given the relationship between Smart Grids and smart meters, such implementation plans would also need the development of Smart Grids, and should thus address the required regulatory incentives for the implementation of Smart Grids. The European Commission will actively monitor Member States’ progress, and provide guidelines on key performance indicators by the end of 2011.
