His account is primarily found in the books of Samuel, Kings, and Chronicles. Benaiah was the son of Jehoiada, a valiant warrior from Kabzeel, and he became one of King David's mighty men, eventually rising to a position of great authority under King Solomon.

Lineage and Early Exploits

Benaiah hailed from Kabzeel, a town in the southern part of Judah. His father, Jehoiada, was a priest, which suggests that Benaiah was of Levitical descent. Benaiah's early exploits are recorded in 2 Samuel 23:20-23 and 1 Chronicles 11:22-25. He is noted for his extraordinary acts of bravery, including striking down two Moabite warriors, killing a lion in a pit on a snowy day, and defeating a formidable Egyptian warrior by seizing the Egyptian's own spear.

Role in David's Reign

Benaiah's loyalty and courage earned him a place among David's elite group of warriors known as "The Thirty," and he was later appointed as the commander of David's bodyguard, the Cherethites and Pelethites (2 Samuel 8:18; 1 Chronicles 18:17). His unwavering support for David is evident throughout the king's reign, and he played a crucial role in maintaining the security and stability of the kingdom.

Support for Solomon

Benaiah's loyalty extended to David's son, Solomon. During the tumultuous period of succession, Benaiah supported Solomon against Adonijah, who attempted to usurp the throne. At David's command, Benaiah executed Adonijah, Joab, and Shimei, thereby securing Solomon's position as king (1 Kings 2:25, 34, 46). His actions demonstrated his commitment to the divinely ordained leadership and the continuity of David's dynasty.

Position under Solomon

Under Solomon, Benaiah was appointed as the commander of the army, succeeding Joab (1 Kings 2:35). This position underscored his military prowess and the trust Solomon placed in him. Benaiah's leadership contributed to the peace and prosperity of Solomon's reign, as he was instrumental in maintaining order and defending the kingdom from external threats.

Legacy

Benaiah's legacy is one of faithfulness, strength, and dedication to God's chosen leaders. His life exemplifies the virtues of courage and loyalty, and he is remembered as a key figure in the establishment and preservation of the united monarchy of Israel. His account serves as an inspiration for those who seek to serve God and His anointed leaders with integrity and valor.
Hitchcock's Bible Names Dictionary
Benaiah
son of the Lord
Smith's Bible Dictionary
Benaiah
(made by the Lord).

The son of Jehoiada the chief priest, (1 Chronicles 27:5) of the tribe of Levi, though a native of Kabzeel, (2 Samuel 23:20) set by David, (1 Chronicles 11:25) over his body-guard.
