Burnz smoked as many as eighty cigarettes a day, and the press dubbed him the "Cigarette Boy Murderer". At his murder trial in December 1900, his defense was that cigarette smoking had made him insane. He was convicted, sentenced to life in prison, but released about 1920, and became an Episcopal minister.
