And He ate nothing in those days, and they having ended, He was hungry. </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/4-3.htm"><b>3</b></a></span>And the devil said to Him, “If You are <i>the</i> Son of God, speak to this stone, that it should become bread.” </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/4-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>And Jesus answered to him, <span class="red">“It has been written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone.’<span class="fn"><a href="#fna" title="Deuteronomy 8:3. BYZ and TR include ‘but on every word of God’">a</a></span>”</span> </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/4-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>And having led Him up, he showed Him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/4-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>And the devil said to Him, “I will give to You all this authority, and its glory; for it has been delivered to me, and I give it to whom I wish. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/4-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>Therefore if You will worship before me, all will be Yours.” </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/4-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>And Jesus answering, said to him, <span class="red">“It has been written: ‘You shall worship <i>the</i> Lord your God, and you shall serve Him only.’<span class="fn"><a href="#fnb" title="Deuteronomy 6:13">b</a></span>”</span> </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/4-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>And he led Him to Jerusalem and set <i>Him</i> upon the pinnacle of the temple, and said to Him, “If You are <i>the</i> Son of God, cast Yourself down from here. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/4-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>For it has been written:</p><p class="indent1stline">‘He will give orders to His angels concerning You,</p><p class="indent2"> to guard You; </p><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/4-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>and in <i>their</i> hands will they bear You <i>up</i>,</p><p class="indent2"> lest ever You strike Your foot against a stone.’<span class="fn"><a href="#fnc" title="Psalm 91:11,12">c</a></span>” </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/4-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>And Jesus answering, said to him, <span class="red">“It has been said, ‘You shall not test <i>the</i> Lord your God.’<span class="fn"><a href="#fnd" title="Deuteronomy 6:16">d</a></span>”</span> </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/4-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>And the devil, having finished every temptation, departed from Him until an opportune time. </p><p class="hdg">Jesus Begins His Ministry<br /><span class="cross">(Isaiah 9:1-7; Matthew 4:12-17; Mark 1:14-15)</span></p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/4-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit to Galilee, and a report concerning Him went out into all the surrounding region. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/4-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>And He was teaching in their synagogues, being glorified by all. </p><p class="hdg">The Rejection at Nazareth<br /><span class="cross">(Isaiah 61:1-11; Matthew 2:19-23; Matthew 13:53-58; Mark 6:1-6; Luke 2:39-40)</span></p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/4-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>And He came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up; and according to His custom, He entered into the synagogue on the day of the Sabbaths, and stood up to read. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/4-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>And <i>the</i> scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to Him, and having unrolled the scroll, He found the place where it was written: </p><p class="indent1stlinered"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/4-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>“<i>The</i> Spirit of <i>the</i> Lord <i>is</i> upon Me,</p><p class="indentred2"> because of which He has anointed Me</p><p class="indentred2"> to preach good news to <i>the</i> poor.</p><p class="indentred1"> He has sent Me<span class="fn"><a href="#fne" title="BYZ and TR include ‘to heal the brokenhearted,’">e</a></span> to proclaim deliverance to <i>the</i> captives,</p><p class="indentred2"> and recovery of sight to <i>the</i> blind,</p><p class="indentred2"> to send forth in deliverance <i>the</i> oppressed, </p><p class="indentred1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/4-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>to proclaim <i>the</i> year of <i>the</i> Lord’s favor.”</span><span class="fn"><a href="#fnf" title="Isaiah 61:1,2">f</a></span> </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/4-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>And having rolled up the scroll, having delivered <i>it</i> to the attendant, He sat down, and the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed upon Him. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/4-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>And He began to say to them, <span class="red">“Today this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.”</span> </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/4-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>And all were bearing witness to Him and marveling at the grace of the words that are proceeding out of His mouth. And they were saying, “Is this not the son of Joseph?” </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/4-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>And He said to them, <span class="red">“Surely you will say to Me this proverb, ‘Physician heal yourself! Whatsoever we have heard has been done in Capernaum, do here in Your hometown also.’”</span> </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/4-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>And He said, <span class="red">“Truly I say to you that no prophet is acceptable in his hometown. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/4-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>And in truth I say to you, there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the heaven was shut up for three years and six months, when there was a great famine upon all the land; <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/4-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>and Elijah was sent to none of them, except to Zarephath of Sidon, to a woman, a widow. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/4-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span>And many lepers<span class="fn"><a href="#fng" title="Leprosy was a term for several skin diseases. See Leviticus 13.">g</a></span> were in Israel in the time of Elisha the prophet, and none of them was cleansed, except Naaman the Syrian.”</span> </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/4-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span>And all in the synagogue were filled with anger, hearing these things, <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/4-29.htm"><b>29</b></a></span>and having risen up, they cast Him out of <i>the</i> city, and led Him unto <i>the</i> brow of the hill upon which their town had been built, in order to throw Him over. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/4-30.htm"><b>30</b></a></span>But He, having passed through their midst, went away. </p><p class="hdg">Jesus Expels an Unclean Spirit<br /><span class="cross">(Mark 1:21-28)</span></p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/4-31.htm"><b>31</b></a></span>And He went down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee. And He was teaching them on the Sabbaths; <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/4-32.htm"><b>32</b></a></span>and they were astonished at His teaching, for His message was with authority. </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/4-33.htm"><b>33</b></a></span>And in the synagogue was a man having a spirit of an unclean demon; and he cried out in a loud voice, <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/4-34.htm"><b>34</b></a></span>“Ha! What to us and to You, Jesus of Nazareth? Are You come to destroy us? I know who You are, the Holy <i>One</i> of God!” </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/4-35.htm"><b>35</b></a></span>And Jesus rebuked him, saying, <span class="red">“Be silent and come forth out of him!”</span> And having thrown him into the midst, the demon came out from him, in nothing having hurt him. </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/4-36.htm"><b>36</b></a></span>And astonishment came upon all, and they were speaking to one another, saying, “What word <i>is</i> this, that He commands the unclean spirits with authority and power, and they come out?” <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/4-37.htm"><b>37</b></a></span>And the report concerning Him was spreading into every place of the surrounding region. </p><p class="hdg">Jesus Heals at Peter's House<br /><span class="cross">(Matthew 8:14-17; Mark 1:29-34)</span></p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/4-38.htm"><b>38</b></a></span>And having risen up out of the synagogue, He entered into the house of Simon. And Simon’s mother-in-law was oppressed with a great fever, and they appealed to Him for her. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/4-39.htm"><b>39</b></a></span>And having stood over her, He rebuked the fever, and it left her; and immediately having arisen, she began to serve them. </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/4-40.htm"><b>40</b></a></span>And at the setting of the sun, all, as many as had <i>any</i> ailing with various diseases, brought them to Him, and having laid the hands on each one of them, He would heal them. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/4-41.htm"><b>41</b></a></span>And demons also were going out from many, crying out and saying, “You are the Son of God.” And rebuking <i>them</i>, He did not allow them to speak, because they knew Him to be the Christ. </p><p class="hdg">Jesus Preaches in Judea<br /><span class="cross">(Mark 1:35-39)</span></p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/4-42.htm"><b>42</b></a></span>And daybreak having arrived, having gone out, He went into a solitary place, and the crowds were seeking Him, and came up to Him and were detaining Him, not to go from them. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/4-43.htm"><b>43</b></a></span>But He said to them, <span class="red">“It behooves Me to preach <i>the</i> good news of the kingdom of God to the other towns also, because for this I have been sent forth.”</span> </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/4-44.htm"><b>44</b></a></span>And He was preaching in the synagogues of Judea.<span class="fn"><a href="#fnh" title="BYZ and TR ‘Galilee’">h</a></span><A name="fn"><br /><br /></p><A name="fna"></a><span class="footnotesbot">a</span> <span class="fnverse">4</span> <span class="footnote">Deuteronomy 8:3.
