The patients indicated pain levels on a VAS at 1 hour and 1 day after surgery, and their degree of edema, erythema and hematoma were self-scored using a four-point rating scale at 1 hour, 1 day, 1 week and 2 months postoperatively.

Full excision of glandular tissue recommended over other techniques for gynecomastia correction

Findings from a recently published study demonstrated the importance of direct excision of the glandular tissue over any other surgical technique for the correction of gynecomastia in body builders, according to researchers. The researchers reviewed data for 1,574 body builders who were treated surgically for gynecomastia in a private practice between 1980 and 2013. Other grafts used included eight columellar struts, six onlay grafts and three spreader grafts. In each city, breast augmentation, mastopexy, abdominoplasty, blepharoplasty and rhytidectomy were compared with economic and demographic statistics. The researchers excluded rhinoplasty and liposuction because these procedures are often associated with large variations in pricing.

FDA provides update on microbiological safety, cosmetics

Although injuries from contaminated cosmetics are not common, they can be serious, according to a cosmetic safety update from the FDA.The update included information on how microorganisms can contaminate cosmetics, ways consumers can protect themselves against microbial contamination and efforts the FDA is utilizing to minimize cosmetic contamination.

Younger women most likely to pursue plastic surgery, point to Internet as top influencer

Data from a recent online study showed among women in the U.S., 87% reported they were unhappy with at least one area of their bodies, and one in five women reported they were currently pursuing or planned to pursue plastic surgery. These rates represent a more than 200% rise in the trend of seeking help from a cosmetic physician, with an estimated market of more than $75 billion, according to a press release from the RealSelf online community.

Mandated discussion of breast cancer reconstruction options does not address physician bias

Despite the 2011 amendment to the Public Health Law in New York State, which was designed to ensure patients received adequate information on and access to breast reconstruction surgery options, researchers found breast surgeon sex and plastic surgeon facility status were the main factors to affect rate and type of construction. The researchers retrospectively analyzed reconstruction rates with regard to timing of legislation, breast surgeon variables, plastic surgeon facility status, type of reconstruction and patient variables for 258 patients who underwent mastectomy between Jan. 1, 2010, and Dec. 31, 2011. More youthful faces with less facial aesthetic unit separation were digitally aged with the addition of lines and contours. Aged faces were digitally enhanced to look younger by blending aesthetic units. Of the patients analyzed, 59 underwent free flap reconstruction, with all receiving chemotherapy and radiation therapy. A total of 40,769 women were identified, among whom 15,093 were 65 years or older. Researchers recently published their results from using a screening questionnaire for this purpose. The researchers utilized the Body Dysmorphic Disorder Questionnaire (BBDQ) and the Body Dysmorphic Disorder Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV (BBD SCID) in 234 patients who presented to a busy academic facial plastic and reconstructive surgery clinic to determine the prevalence of body dysmorphic disorder (BDD). Additionally, the BDD SCID and a defect severity scale were used to confirm BDD diagnosis and validate BDDQ findings, and demographic characteristics, depression and anxiety were measured in all patients.

Surgeons should take psychosocial impact of scarring from skin cancer surgery into account

In a literature review, researchers addressed the psychological impacts of facial scarring following skin cancer surgery and the utility of patient-reported outcome tools in identifying patients with scar concerns preoperatively.Using the PubMed database, the researchers identified articles related to scarring and appearance within the context of cutaneous oncology and surgical reconstruction.

SERI surgical scaffold increases patient satisfaction in implant-based breast reconstruction

At 1 year after breast reconstruction with the SERI surgical scaffold, patients reported a higher level of satisfaction with their reconstructed breasts compared with preoperative screening, according to interim study data.
