but his sons<MH1121> were with his livestock<MH4735> in the field<MH7704>, so Jacob<MH3290> said<MH2790b> nothing<MH2790b> until<MH5704> they came<MH935> in<MH935>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/34-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>Then Hamor<MH2544> the father<MH1> of Shechem<MH7927> went<MH3318> out<MH3318> to Jacob<MH3290> to speak<MH1696> with him. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/34-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>Now the sons<MH1121> of Jacob<MH3290> came<MH935> in<MH935> from the field<MH7704> when they heard<MH8085> <i>about it;</i> and the men<MH376> were grieved<MH6087a>, and they were<MH2734> very<MH3966> angry<MH2734> because<MH3588> he had done<MH6213a> a <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>disgraceful<MH5039> thing<MH5039> in Israel<MH3478> by <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>sleeping<MH7901> with Jacob’s<MH3290> daughter<MH1323>, for such<MH3651> a<MH3651> thing<MH3651> ought not to be done<MH6213a>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/34-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>But Hamor<MH2544> spoke<MH1696> with them, saying<MH559>, “The soul<MH5315> of my son<MH1121> Shechem<MH7927> longs<MH2836a> for your daughter<MH1323>; please<MH4994> give<MH5414> her to him <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>in marriage<MH802>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/34-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>And intermarry<MH2859> with us; give<MH5414> your daughters<MH1323> to us and take<MH3947> our daughters<MH1323> for yourselves. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/34-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>So you will live<MH3427> with us, and the land<MH776> shall be <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>open<MH6440> to you; live<MH3427> and trade<MH5503> in it and acquire<MH270> property<MH270> in it.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/34-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>Shechem<MH7927> also said<MH559> to her father<MH1> and to her brothers<MH251>, “Let me find<MH4672> favor<MH2580> in your sight<MH5869>, and I will give<MH5414> whatever<MH834> you tell<MH559> me. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/34-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>Demand<MH7235a> of me ever so<MH3966> much<MH7235a, 3966> bridal<MH4119> payment<MH4119> and gift<MH4976>, and I will give<MH5414> whatever you tell<MH559> me; but give<MH5414> me the girl<MH5291> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>in marriage<MH802>.” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/34-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>But Jacob’s<MH3290> sons<MH1121> answered<MH6030a, 1696> Shechem<MH7927> and his father<MH1> Hamor<MH2544> with deceit<MH4820>, because<MH834> he had defiled<MH2930> their sister<MH269> Dinah<MH1783>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/34-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>They said<MH559> to them, “We cannot<MH3201, 3808> do<MH6213a> this<MH2088> thing<MH1697>, <i>that is,</i> give<MH5414> our sister<MH269> to a man<MH376> who<MH834> is uncircumcised<MH6190>, for that would be a disgrace<MH2781> to us. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/34-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>Only<MH389> on this<MH2088> <i>condition</i> will we consent<MH225> to you: if<MH518> you will become<MH1961> like<MH3644> us, in that every<MH3605> male<MH2145> of you will be circumcised<MH4135>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/34-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>then we will give<MH5414> our daughters<MH1323> to you, and we will take<MH3947> your daughters<MH1323> for ourselves, and we will live<MH3427> with you and become<MH1961> one<MH259> people<MH5971a>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/34-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>But if<MH518> you do not listen<MH8085> to us to be circumcised<MH4135>, then we will take<MH3947> our daughter<MH1323> and go<MH1980>.” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/34-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>Now their words<MH1697> seemed<MH3190> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>reasonable<MH3190> to Hamor<MH2544> and Shechem<MH7927>, Hamor’s<MH2544> son<MH1121>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/34-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>The young<MH5288> man<MH5288> did not delay<MH309> to do<MH6213a> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>this<MH1697>, because<MH3588> he was delighted<MH2654a> with Jacob’s<MH3290> daughter<MH1323>. Now he was more<MH4480> respected<MH3513> than<MH4480> all<MH3605> the household<MH1004> of his father<MH1>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/34-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>So Hamor<MH2544> and his son<MH1121> Shechem<MH7927> came<MH935> to the gate<MH8179> of their city<MH5892b> and spoke<MH1696> to the people<MH376> of their city<MH5892b>, saying<MH559>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/34-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>“These<MH428> men<MH376> are <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>friendly<MH8003> to us; therefore let them live<MH3427> in the land<MH776> and trade<MH5503> in it, for behold<MH2009>, the land<MH776> is <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[l]</a></span>large<MH7342, 3027> enough<MH3027> for them. We will take<MH3947> their daughters<MH1323> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[m]</a></span>in marriage<MH802>, and give<MH5414> our daughters<MH1323> to them. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/34-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>Only<MH389> on this<MH2088> <i>condition</i> will the men<MH376> consent<MH225> to us to live<MH3427> with us, to become<MH1961> one<MH259> people<MH5971a>: that every<MH3605> male<MH2145> among us be circumcised<MH4135> just<MH3512c> as<MH3512c> they are circumcised<MH4135>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/34-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>Will their livestock<MH4735> and their property<MH7075> and all<MH3605> their animals<MH929> not be ours?
