Yet, the work culture in corporate world has gone for a toss. It is somewhere in a state of decay as certain fundamental realities are not taken care. Hence, the brunt is borne by employees who are the real architects of corporate world and they are made to stand at the bottom of pyramid. Often, the problems faced by the employees are not discussed upfront and always brushed under the carpet.</p><blockquote class="oj"><p id="4db1" class="ok ol gu bf om on oo op oq or os oh du">Therefore, from outside being an employee in the corporate world sounds like great news, it’s not necessarily great in reality.</p></blockquote><h2 id="c329" class="ot ou gu bf ov ow ox dy oy oz pa ea pb nv pc pd pe nz pf pg ph od pi pj pk pl bk"><strong class="al">The gap</strong></h2><p id="f6cb" class="pw-post-body-paragraph nk nl gu nm b nn pm np nq nr pn nt nu nv po nx ny nz pp ob oc od pq of og oh gn bk">After completing college, one starts looking for a job. It is time now, to apply your knowledge in the real world. Even though educational institutions are training millions of youngsters yet corporate are often complaining that they are not getting the necessary skill and talent required for a job.</p><blockquote class="oj"><p id="824f" class="ok ol gu bf om on oo op oq or os oh du">There is a huge gap between the Indian education sector and corporate sector.</p></blockquote><p id="192c" class="pw-post-body-paragraph nk nl gu nm b nn pr np nq nr ps nt nu nv pt nx ny nz pu ob oc od pv of og oh gn bk">Still, a major segment of graduates remain unemployable. According to <a class="af pw" href="http://www.aspiringminds.com/sites/default/files/National%20Employability%20Report%20-%20Engineers%20Annual%20Report%202016.pdf" rel="noopener ugc nofollow" target="_blank">‘National Employability Report’ 2016</a>, which is based on a study of more than 1,50,000 engineering students who graduated in 2015 from over 650 colleges, 80 percent of them were unemployable and only three percent had suitable skills to be employed in software or product market. The lack of skill and job readiness, only points to a mismatch between the industry and academia.</p><h2 id="4906" class="ot ou gu bf ov ow px dy oy oz py ea pb nv pz pd pe nz qa pg ph od qb pj pk pl bk"><strong class="al">Yes Boss!</strong></h2><p id="41a8" class="pw-post-body-paragraph nk nl gu nm b nn pm np nq nr pn nt nu nv po nx ny nz pp ob oc od pq of og oh gn bk">Indian corporates have a strong hierarchically structured. When it comes to decision making.It is generally left to higher authorities. Such as the company director, owner or a very senior manager, who take the decision.</p><blockquote class="oj"><p id="aa98" class="ok ol gu bf om on oo op oq or os oh du">Moreover, the relationships between a manager and its subordinate is aimed to attach a set of responsibilities and expectations to a certain person in a senior position.</p></blockquote><p id="0ede" class="pw-post-body-paragraph nk nl gu nm b nn pr np nq nr ps nt nu nv pt nx ny nz pu ob oc od pv of og oh gn bk">Typically, the manager is responsible for taking care of his or her employees, and in return, her subordinates will be expected to show great loyalty to her without any questions on her authority.</p><h2 id="7bc1" class="ot ou gu bf ov ow px dy oy oz py ea pb nv pz pd pe nz qa pg ph od qb pj pk pl bk"><strong class="al">Work life balance is a myth</strong></h2><p id="68d5" class="pw-post-body-paragraph nk nl gu nm b nn pm np nq nr pn nt nu nv po nx ny nz pp ob oc od pq of og oh gn bk">Indians work around 2,195 hours on an average every year, which is far above the 1,473 hours a year in Hamburg, Germany that ranked among the top three for work-life balance.</p><p id="de7d" class="pw-post-body-paragraph nk nl gu nm b nn no np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe of og oh gn bk">In India, work-life balance remains a myth as most of us spend hours at the office, often at the expense of their personal lives. Moreover, a<a class="af pw" href="http://www.ey.com/us/en/about-us/our-people-and-culture/ey-study-highlights-work-life-is-harder-worldwide#.V_Ok6clFppU" rel="noopener ugc nofollow" target="_blank"> 2015 study by EY</a> that surveyed work-life balance in eight countries, including India. Over 30% of the Indian respondents in that study said that managing work, family, and personal responsibilities had become harder in the past five years.</p><p id="9cfd" class="pw-post-body-paragraph nk nl gu nm b nn no np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe of og oh gn bk">The average Indian between the ages of 20 and 34 works 52 hours a week which is higher than western country, where people only work for 40 hours per week.</p><blockquote class="oj"><p id="fbd1" class="ok ol gu bf om on oo op oq or os oh du">This is due to for every job, there are five other people willing to do it — maybe for a lower pay. In India, no one is indispensable, rather everyone is replaceable.</p></blockquote><h2 id="b2a2" class="ot ou gu bf ov ow ox dy oy oz pa ea pb nv pc pd pe nz pf pg ph od pi pj pk pl bk"><strong class="al">The gender divide</strong></h2><p id="826f" class="pw-post-body-paragraph nk nl gu nm b nn pm np nq nr pn nt nu nv po nx ny nz pp ob oc od pq of og oh gn bk">In the present day, Indian working women is juggling with a double burden — home and work. They’re not only expected to take good care of their kids and households, but at the same time perform at the workplace.</p><p id="aadc" class="pw-post-body-paragraph nk nl gu nm b nn no np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe of og oh gn bk">Even though, companies have started improving gender diversity in the office, but these policies don’t have an effect on women’s conventional roles as wives and mothers.</p><blockquote class="oj"><p id="3d16" class="ok ol gu bf om on oo op oq or os oh du">Indian women bear the burden of raising children with often very little help from their husbands. Therefore, they are forced to rely on maids or in-laws, if they want to continue working. Find this kind of help isn’t easy.</p></blockquote><p id="86e1" class="pw-post-body-paragraph nk nl gu nm b nn pr np nq nr ps nt nu nv pt nx ny nz pu ob oc od pv of og oh gn bk">Corporate India is a long way away from making room for the daily demands of childcare. Even though a number of companies are offering creches and day-care facilities on site, they’re still not common enough. Many talented women, thus, take long career breaks or even quit permanently.</p><h2 id="2761" class="ot ou gu bf ov ow px dy oy oz py ea pb nv pz pd pe nz qa pg ph od qb pj pk pl bk"><strong class="al">The stigma of mental health</strong></h2><p id="504e" class="pw-post-body-paragraph nk nl gu nm b nn pm np nq nr pn nt nu nv po nx ny nz pp ob oc od pq of og oh gn bk">A 2016<a class="af pw" href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/jobs/46-of-workforce-in-firms-in-india-suffer-from-some-or-the-other-form-of-stress-data/articleshow/52696795.cms" rel="noopener ugc nofollow" target="_blank"> survey</a> of 200,000 employed professionals across 30 Indian firms suggested that 46 percent reported suffering extreme stress as a consequence of their work. Pressure related to their jobs had caused at-risk individuals to sometime think about suicide.<strong class="nm gv"> </strong>Often, the work culture, pressure or supervisors and colleague behaviour would aggravate pre-existing mental health issues on the part of vulnerable employees.</p><blockquote class="oj"><p id="07fd" class="ok ol gu bf om on oo op oq or os oh du">On the other hand, even if their attempts to seek medical help, the employee has to politely terms being sick with “viral fever” instead of anxiety or kept hidden.</p></blockquote><p id="4e0c" class="pw-post-body-paragraph nk nl gu nm b nn pr np nq nr ps nt nu nv pt nx ny nz pu ob oc od pv of og oh gn bk">With numbers to likely increase in the future, there is a need to ensure the mental well-being of their employees.</p><h2 id="4c04" class="ot ou gu bf ov ow px dy oy oz py ea pb nv pz pd pe nz qa pg ph od qb pj pk pl bk"><strong class="al">The battle with the traffic</strong></h2><p id="b9c4" class="pw-post-body-paragraph nk nl gu nm b nn pm np nq nr pn nt nu nv po nx ny nz pp ob oc od pq of og oh gn bk">And what makes things even worse for all workers is a problem particular to India is the traffic.</p><blockquote class="oj"><p id="cb2c" class="ok ol gu bf om on oo op oq or os oh du">As matter of fact, in Bengaluru, employees spend on an average two hours a day commuting, this adds up to 470 hour per year in traffic. While, in Mumbai and its suburbs, some people travel an insane eight hours a day getting to and from work.</p></blockquote><p id="1252" class="pw-post-body-paragraph nk nl gu nm b nn pr np nq nr ps nt nu nv pt nx ny nz pu ob oc od pv of og oh gn bk">This sorry state of affairs, is sometimes mixed with with the requirement to match up business with people in other time zones, notably the US,, which makes things worse here.</p><p id="9cb9" class="pw-post-body-paragraph nk nl gu nm b nn no np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe of og oh gn bk">Due to the traffic, the work day starts late gn bk">Even if, the company policies encourage to have a work-life balance, gender equality, it is more likely to be on papers as in the reality ‘work’ always comes first.</p><p id="ddda"
