It highlights the risks and benefits of data sharing, traces its history, and showcases tools to protect our privacy. Patel guides viewers through data tracking complexities and offers tips for safeguarding personal information.

In the segment "Benefits of Sharing Data," Patel visits the MIT Media Lab, where Ramesh Raskar and his team at the Camera Culture research group are developing innovative tools that protect patient privacy. They use "no-peek privacy" and "data smashing" to extract insights without exposing sensitive data.

Raskar's approach leverages AI to analyze health data within hospitals, transmitting only the valuable conclusions. For example, AI can identify Covid-19 signs from lung X-rays without sharing raw data. This method could significantly advance medical research if widely adopted by tech companies.

Ultrasound offers a new way to perform deep brain stimulation

MIT engineers’ implantable ImPULS device could become an alternative to the electrodes now used to treat Parkinson’s and other diseases.

Featured Video: Researchers discuss queer visibility in academia

In “Scientific InQueery,” LGBTQ+ MIT faculty and graduate students describe finding community and living their authentic lives.

Media Lab Community Awards and Recognitions

View recent awards and recognitions received by members of the Media Lab community in the modules attached here.

Congratulations to everyone graduating in 2024!

We're so proud of everything you've accomplished here, and can't wait to see what you do next.

Media Lab Research Theme: Decentralized Society

The Challenge: To shape the future with decentralized technologies

Our world faces a range of complex challenges across multiple sectors, including health, climate, supply chain, and transportation.
