The context is Jesus preparing His followers for the opposition they will encounter. Historically, early Christians were often brought before religious and civil authorities. This reflects the reality of the early church as seen in Acts, where apostles like Peter and Paul were frequently arrested and tried. The phrase "hand you over" suggests betrayal, possibly by those close to them, echoing Jesus' own betrayal by Judas.
do not worry about how to respond or what to say
Jesus instructs His disciples not to be anxious about their defense. This reflects a trust in divine provision and guidance. In the cultural context of the time, public speaking and rhetoric were highly valued skills. However, Jesus emphasizes reliance on the Holy Spirit rather than human wisdom or eloquence. This aligns with passages like 1 Corinthians 2:4-5, where Paul speaks of relying on the Spirit's power rather than persuasive words.
In that hour you will be given what to say
This promise assures the disciples of divine assistance in moments of trial. The phrase "in that hour" indicates a specific, timely intervention by God. This is consistent with the biblical theme of God providing for His people in times of need, as seen in Exodus 4:12, where God promises to help Moses speak. It also points to the work of the Holy Spirit, who empowers believers, as described in John 14:26, where Jesus promises the Spirit will teach and remind them of His teachings.
Persons / Places / Events
1. Jesus Christ
The speaker of this verse, providing instructions to His disciples as He sends them out to preach the Gospel.

2. The Disciples
The immediate audience of Jesus' instructions, representing all believers who face persecution for their faith.

3. Persecution
The event or situation Jesus is addressing, where believers are brought before authorities because of their faith.

4. The Holy Spirit
Implied as the source of the words given to the disciples in their time of need, though not explicitly mentioned in this verse.

5. Synagogues and Governors
Contextual places where the disciples might be brought to give an account of their faith.
Teaching Points
Trust in Divine Provision
Believers are called to trust that God will provide the necessary words and wisdom when facing persecution or challenging situations.

The Role of the Holy Spirit
The Holy Spirit is our helper and guide, equipping us to speak truthfully and boldly in defense of our faith.

Courage in Persecution
This verse encourages believers to stand firm in their faith, knowing that God is with them even in the face of opposition.

Preparation through Prayer and Study
While divine assistance is promised, believers should also prepare themselves through prayer and study of the Scriptures to be ready for any situation.

Living Witnesses
Our lives and words should consistently testify to the truth of the Gospel, trusting that God will use us as His witnesses.
Lists and Questions
Top 10 Lessons from Matthew 10

Who truly acts as a neighbor to those in need?

What events transpired during the crucifixion of Jesus?

How should we respond to persecution for our faith?

If Jesus is the Prince of Peace, why does He say, "I have not come to bring peace, but a sword" (Matthew 10:34)?
Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers
(19) Take no thought.--In the same sense as in <a href="/matthew/6-25.htm" title="Therefore I say to you, Take no thought for your life, what you shall eat, or what you shall drink; nor yet for your body, what you shall put on. The words indicate an almost tender sympathy with the feelings of Galilean disciples, "unlearned and ignorant men," standing before those who were counted so much their superiors in power and knowledge. The words that follow contain a two-fold promise: not only what they should say, but how, in what form and phrase, to say it, should be given them in that hour. The courage of Peter and John before the Sanhedrin is at once the earliest and the most striking instance of the fulfilment of the promise (Acts 4:13).

Pulpit Commentary
Verses 19, 20. - For these two verses, compare (besides Mark 13:11; Luke 21:15; vide supra, ver. 17) Luke 12:11, 12, with which there is doubtless a common basis.
