His actions are set against the backdrop of a royal court where false prophets often sought favor with the king. This context highlights the tension between true and false prophecy, a recurring theme in the Old Testament.
struck Micaiah in the face
This act of violence against Micaiah, a true prophet of God, underscores the hostility faced by those who spoke God's truth in opposition to popular opinion or royal desires. Striking someone in the face was a grave insult and a demonstration of contempt, reflecting the deep animosity between the prophets of the LORD and those aligned with Ahab's court.
and demanded, “Which way did the Spirit of the LORD go
Zedekiah's question is sarcastic and rhetorical, intended to mock Micaiah's claim to have received a true message from God. The Spirit of the LORD is a reference to the divine inspiration that guided the prophets. This moment illustrates the spiritual blindness and arrogance of those who reject God's true messengers.
when He departed from me to speak with you?”
Zedekiah's words reveal his presumption of having the Spirit's guidance, despite his false prophecies. This reflects the broader biblical theme of false prophets who claim divine authority without true connection to God. The confrontation between Zedekiah and Micaiah echoes other biblical narratives where true prophets are vindicated by God, such as Elijah's contest with the prophets of Baal.
Persons / Places / Events
1. Zedekiah son of Chenaanah
A false prophet who opposed Micaiah and supported King Ahab with favorable prophecies.

2. Micaiah
A true prophet of the LORD who delivered an unpopular message of truth to King Ahab.

3. King Ahab
The king of Israel who sought counsel from prophets regarding going to war against Ramoth-gilead.

4. Spirit of the LORD
The divine presence and influence that guides true prophets in delivering God's messages.

5. Ramoth-gilead
The location of the impending battle where Ahab sought to reclaim territory from the Arameans.
Teaching Points
The Cost of Truth
Standing for God's truth may lead to persecution and opposition, as seen in Micaiah's experience. The words which accompany it evidently convey a sarcastic reference to the knowledge of the secret dealings of God, implied in Micaiah's vision, with a view to turn it into ridicule. Micaiah's answer accordingly passes them by, and merely declares the shame and terror, with which Zedekiah shall find out hereafter the truth of the prophecy of evil. Josephus has a curious addition, that Zedekiah challenged Micaiah to wither up his hand, like the hand of Jeroboam at Bethel, and scouted his prophecy as inconsistent with that of Elijah (Antt. viii. 15, ? 4).

Pulpit Commentary
Verse 24. - But Zedekiah the son of Chenaanah [Rawlinson holds that he was a sort of coryphaeus of the false prophets.
