href="https://www.iea.org/oilmarketreport/omrpublic/" target="_blank">International Energy Agency (IEA) reported a sharp increase in the demand for oil in the second quarter of 2017 with growth at 2.4 percent or 2.3 million barrels per day. The agency’s 2017 growth estimate has been revised upwards to 1.6 million barrels per day. The IEA is predicting the growth will continue into 2018 at the rate of 1.4 percent.

Neil Atkinson, head of the IEA’s oil industry and markets division, indicated that a rebalancing of the market is underway as demand is “pretty robust”. This optimistic prediction comes as global oil supplies decreased in August. The reduction in supply was caused by multilateral measures to reduce excess stock in addition to unplanned outages caused by Hurricane Harvey.

U.S. crude production was temporarily disrupted by about 800,000 barrels per day in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey primarily in the Texas Eagle Ford Shale area. According to OPEC‘s Monthly Oil Market Report, “existing high stock levels and the restart of refineries and pipelines after Harvey allowed gasoline futures prices to quickly return to previous levels and the shortfall of U.S. products exports to nearby destinations has been accommodated by cargoes from other regions.” Harvey impacted the NYMEX WTI values showing a slip from 5 percent from the previous week to $45.96 per barrel. This slip can be attributed to the fact that lasting damage to offshore facilities was not expected. Also, the U.S. supply is less vulnerable to storms with the development of the U.S. shale industry.

In the wake of Harvey, oil producers have been dealing with disruptions in shipping, pipeline operations and refining along the Gulf Coast. Mysanantonio.com reported that even if the usual amount of oil was pumped, refiners weren’t buying it. Several refineries from Corpus Christi to Port Arthur were shut down for several days following Hurricane Harvey. However, the Eagle Ford area was able to bounce back quickly after the extreme weather. EOG Resources, the largest oil producer in the Eagle Ford, expects its oil production to drop slightly by roughly 15,000 barrels for that quarter. The company, however, expects to offset that drop by adjusting its drilling schedule, making the prediction that it could produce the 332,000 to 338,000 barrels it had expected to produce pre-storm. IHS Market stated that in the wake of Hurricane Harvey, key Eagle Ford operators are reporting a quick ramp up in production nearly reaching pre-storm levels. Indications were good that production would continue to increase as there had been no reports of damage to crude-producing operations as personnel were completing inspections and resuming operations.

Although operators in the Eagle Ford have recovered remarkably well after Harvey and production is on track, it should be noted that the Permian Basin area can easily provide enough oil for increased demand. The Energy Information Administration describes the Permian Basin area as a long-time oil and natural gas producing region in west Texas and eastern New Mexico. Oil production in the Permian Basin continues to increase making it a reliable source even if Eagle Ford producers are unable to keep up with demand.

Texas leads the way when it comes to oil production and associated technologies. The oil producers of Texas consistently develop new and innovative technologies in oil production that are recognized worldwide. Therefore, it is no surprise that these same oil producers have found a way to bounce back and resume operations after Hurricane Harvey and many are optimistic that production levels will reach pre-storm levels in the very near future. Although Texas was hit hard by Harvey and is still dealing with the aftermath, it has proven its ability to bounce back quickly after such a hard blow, illustrating what is meant by the saying, “Texas Strong.”

US a Net Exporter of Oil by 2023 Says S&P Global Platts

SEOadmin

Oil and Gas Current Events

Oil and Gas Interesting Facts

Permian Basin Oil News

Uncategorized

Crude Oil

Crude Oil Export Ban

Crude Oil Exports

Crude Oil Prices

Domestic Oil Production

Oil Production

OPEC

Permian Basin

Shale Liquids

Shale Production

Texas Oil Production

U.S. Oil Production

The PIRA Energy Group predicts the U.S. will be a net exporter ...

The PIRA Energy Group predicts the U.S. will be a net exporter of oil by the year 2023. If this prediction comes true, it could quite possibly change the landscape of the global oil market.

According to the latest S&P Global Platts PIRA Energy August special report, the U.S. is set to become a net oil exporter due to the increase in shale liquids output. The Permian Basin is leading the way in this increase of crude production and is the top producing area in the United States.

The Oil and Gas Journal states “that net oil imports (total liquids supply minus oil demand) peaked in 2005 at 12.5 million barrels per day and will fall down to 4.4 million barrels per day this year. During the same period, U.S. liquids production increased by 87 percent to 15.6 million barrels per day.”

According to an article published by New Europe, PIRA’s 2017 forecast suggests the U.S. will also be a net exporter of 900,000 barrels per day of the four major refined products that include gasoline, diesel, jet fuel and kerosene. Additionally, higher shale production results in the growth of NGL (Natural Gas Liquids) exports.

As a net exporter of oil, the U.S. will undoubtedly have greater influence on crude oil prices, thus reducing the power of OPEC countries and their ability to manipulate crude prices at will. This could possibly usher in a new age in the global oil market where OPEC is no longer the only game in town.

RELATED >> Permian Crude Fuels Oil Exports from Corpus Christi & Texas Railroad Commissioner, Ryan Sitton, expects oil exports from the Port of Corpus Christi alone to rise from one million barrels per day to three million barrels per day.

Speaking during a tour of the Corpus Christi port and channel Sitton said, “Fifty-percent of the growth is going to come from Asia, so we’ve got to get our products to Asia.” Sitton went on to add, ” The Port of Corpus Christi is going to play a vital role in that. Not only because it’s already a big liquid export facility, but because the geography where we are enables ease of construction of pipelines to bring products into this port.”

“We’re talking about going from a million barrels of crude oil a day to three million barrels of crude oil a day, which would be three-percent of the world’s oil consumption,” Sitton said. “That will be tens of thousands of jobs all up and down the entire ship channel, and particularly right here in Corpus Christi.”

The Houston and Baytown areas in Texas also look to cash in on oil flowing out of the Permian Basin to crude markets across the globe. Houston is number two in U.S. oil exports falling right behind the Port of Corpus Christi. Houston has the capacity to ship around 1.7 million barrels per day according to Timm Schneider, senior managing director for Evercore ISI.

The problem with the Houston ship channel is congestion. In 2015, fog shut down the channel for approximately 680 hours which led to long lines of ships waiting for a berth. However, because of the facilities along the 52-mile Houston Ship Channel, Houston should remain one of the largest petrochemical ports in the world for a very long time.

Oil production in the Permian Basin is nearing 2.5 million barrels per day and experts are suggesting that production could exceed 4 million barrels per day if global demand, and price, require it.

RELATED >> US a Net Exporter of Oil by 2023 Says S&P Global Platts

RELATED >> US Crude Exports in 2017 Could Exceed Some OPEC Nations

RELATED >> US Oil Exports on the Rise

RELATED >> Permian Basin Scores with Lifting of Crude Oil Export Ban

US Shale Production on Record-Setting Pace

SEOadmin

New Mexico Oil and Gas Investing

Oil and Gas Current Events

Oil and Gas Interesting Facts

Permian Basin Oil News

Texas Oil and Gas Investing

Anadarko Basin

Aresco LP

Bakken Shale

Barnett Shale

Brazos Basin

Crude Oil

Crude Oil Exports

Crude Oil Prices

Domestic Oil Production

Drilling Technology

Eagle Ford Shale

Eagle Ford Shale Production

Energy Information Administration (EIA)

Energy Investing

Energy Production

Haynesville Shale

Horizontal Drilling

Investing in Texas Oil

Karnes County Oil

Light Sweet Crude

Noodle Canyon

Oil and Gas Investing

Oil Exploration

Oil Market

Oil Production

Oil Shale

OPEC

Permian Basin

Saudi Arabia

Shale Boom

Shale Oil

Shale Production

Sweet Crude Oil

Texas Oil Production

Unconventional Drilling

West Texas Intermediate

US shale production is up. Not only is it up, but it’s been on a mostly continuous uptick for several months now. Is this good news for Texas oil investors? Well, it depends where pricing goes over the next couple of years––and surging US oil production will play a big part in that (but not in the way you might think).

OPEC’s Diminishing Impact on Pricing

Whereas OPEC used to be firmly in the driver’s seat when it came to controlling access to oil (and manipulating pricing), the rise in US shale production is literally changing the world.

The most recent surge in US production growth occurs ahead of OPEC talks to consider extending or ending production cuts originally enacted in Fall 2016. From mid-2014 through OPEC’s decision to curtail production in November 2016, oil pricing was in seeming free-fall, dipping at times below the $30 per barrel mark. Despite low oil pricing’s effect on OPEC kingpin Saudi Arabia’s purse, according to Investopedia, “when faced with a decision between letting prices continue to drop or ceding market share by cutting production in an effort to send prices upward again, Saudi Arabia kept its production stable, deciding that low oil prices offered more of a long-term benefit than giving up market share.”

The more hardline interpretation behind OPEC’s stance? It’s speculated that OPEC held its ground to keep more oil in the market than demand could bear in an effort to drive US shale producers out of business.

“More oil on the market” did not go as planned.

After an initial dip driven by rock bottom oil pricing, US domestic oil production began to rise again, driven (once again) by technological innovation. The US oil industry continues to innovate and create new ways of extracting hydrocarbons, faster and cheaper. This means US producers can compete even as oil prices remain depressed––pumping more and more oil despite OPEC’s attempts to meddle in their business.

The continual onslaught of US production potential now has OPEC, OPEC-affiliates, and even Russia back on their heels again––despite strict adherence to production cuts. With their failure to curtail US oil production, these petrostates have lost much of their ability to manipulate the market, which puts them at a tremendous disadvantage at home. With prices below $65––and, for some, $85––per barrel, they can no longer comfortably fund their social policies and political machines.

So, while the US shale revolution continues onward becoming more and more competitive at lower price points, OPEC and the like need higher pricing––or face potential unrest on the home front.

It’s a changing world, indeed.

The Continuous Rise of Shale Oil Output

Despite OPEC’s attempts to keep it down, US shale oil output continues to grow and set records. Driving much of this growth is the Texas Permian Basin along with the output from the Eagle Ford and Bakken regions.

Every month, the EIA forecast called for more barrels, and every month the number of barrels increased. Next month, that trend looks to continue with US shale production ramping up to new record levels. The EIA also estimates 2.6 million of the estimated 6.15 million barrels a day will come from the Texas Permian Basin.

The US Shale Forecast Continues to Expand

In even more bad news for OPEC, the EIA forecast has grown to include even more shale regions throughout the Lower 48. The more successful shale plays are, the more shale plays show up. The most recent Drilling Productivity Report from the EIA shows growth by thousands of barrels a day in seven main regions.

Permian

Eagle Ford

Bakken

Niobrara

Anadarko

Appalachia

Haynesville

Each region will see an uptick in gas and oil production between August and September.

How This Affects Texas Oil Investors

Many investors fear US shale production will continue to glut the oil market and keep prices down––especially if OPEC members opt to kill agreed-upon cuts and further flood the market. But as explained above, OPEC and other states that depend on hydrocarbon revenue are already walking a fine line keeping their budgets out of the red. How much oil can they afford to let flood the market knowing that doing so may drive prices even lower?

Outside of OPEC’s decision to cut or not this November, two key factors will continue to impact individuals and companies looking to invest in domestic oil production––especially in Texas.

The first key factor is ever-rising demand for oil. In a recent article for Forbes.com, Oil & Gas industry contributor Jude Clemente writes:

“As the world’s most important fuel, the most traded commodity, and the enabling force of globalization, the demand for oil is ever-growing. Every year, oil demand rises by around 1.3 million per day, or 1-2%.

This is an extra 55 million gallons of oil being added to global consumption every 12 months. And it’s easy to see why: around 97% of transportation is powered by oil, and global economic growth is tied to petroleum because it’s our primary fuel. Rising incomes mean more oil demand.”

To help meet this demand, US producers can now export oil worldwide––and none more easily so than those producing oil in Texas. According to a recent article in the Houston Chronicle:

“… while domestic oil consumption is rising only slightly, the foreign demand for U.S. oil is booming, spurred by the 2015 end to a decades-old ban on crude exports. The U.S. today ships out almost 1 million barrels of oil each day compared with about 520,000 barrels in 2016.

U.S. oil exports are expected to triple to about 3 million barrels a day by 2025, said Kurt Barrow, a vice president of oil markets for IHS. That oil will be fed primarily by Permian production and shipped from ports in Houston and Corpus Christi.”

The second key factor affecting Texas oil investing is ever-advancing drilling and oil-field technology, which continually drives the price of production down. This is especially true of the Permian, where some large investors are tying a lot of money into shale plays with long-term plans––locking in opportunity now when prices are low knowing they can’t stay low forever. Given the fact that output from currently known fields is estimated to fall over 45 million barrels per day over the next 25 years, timely investment today can yield the potential for tremendous dividends tomorrow.

So, is the record-setting pace in US shale production good for Texas oil investors? Certain signs point to “yes” once you take a look at all the players––and bet on US drive and innovation to win the day, any day.

Texas Drilling Permits Up Sharply in 2017 Vs. 2016

SEOadmin

Oil and Gas Current Events

Oil and Gas Interesting Facts

Permian Basin Oil News

Texas Oil and Gas Investing

Uncategorized

Crude Oil

Crude Oil Exports

Crude Oil Prices

Domestic Oil Production

Drilling Technology

Eagle Ford Shale

Eagle Ford Shale Production

Energy Information Administration (EIA)

Fracking

Investing in Texas Oil

Oil and Gas Investing

Oil Exploration

Oil Production

Permian Basin

Texas Oil Production

Texas Railroad Commission

U.S. Oil Production

Unconventional Drilling

Good news for Texas oil investors as Texas drilling permits rise sharply ...

Good news for Texas oil investors as Texas drilling permits rise sharply in 2017 versus 2016. According to Texas’ energy regulator, the Railroad Commission of Texas, original permits issued in July 2017 nearly doubled when compared to the same month in 2016. There were 1,011 original permits issued in July 2017 compared to 631 issued in July 2016. A majority of these were issued for the Permian Basin, one of the most desirable destinations for drilling. Texas holds the record in the United States for having the most productive drilling rigs. This trend will likely continue for as long as the outlook for U.S. gas and oil drilling remains strong. Texas oil producers will also continue to shell out additional capital to drill new wells.

The Permian Basin in Texas is the largest crude oil producing region in the United States. According to the Energy Information Administration, production from the Permian Basin is expected to increase 2.5 percent, once the numbers from July come in, which translates to 2.5 million barrels per day. If the EIA’s prediction is proved to be on target, Eagle Ford production would also increase by about two percent to 1.38 million barrels per day.

The global consulting firm McKinsey & Co. reported that the high production of the Permian Basin, one of the most lucrative producers of shale oil in the country, could contribute to 20 percent of the growth by 2021 which will obviously lead to an increase in Texas drilling permits over the next few years. Improved efficiency will contribute to this growth in exploration.

Noteworthy is the fact that although Texas drilling permits have sharply increased, well completions are down. Investors should, however, not be concerned. Producers may accumulate a large number of drilled, but uncompleted new wells at which point the viability of each well will be assessed on the basis of current crude prices, service costs, and production potential. Being able to make such an assessment gives producers an overview of which wells will be the most lucrative, allowing them to focus on those wells and delay production on wells that will not be as productive. By having a large number of uncompleted wells, production can be increased at the drop of a hat if demand or crude prices require such an increase.

The Permian continues to attract new energy companies and this is great news for investors. Ryan Sitton, Commissioner for the Railroad Commission of Texas, predicts that crude prices will rise above $60 per barrel next year. That estimate has increased applications for Texas drilling permits as investors look to the future. Sitton goes on to predict that the Port of Corpus Christi will increase exports of crude from one million barrels per day to three million barrels per day. This would provide a much needed service to companies looking to sell their Texas sweet crude on the global market.

Texas sets the standard in oil production that is recognized around the world. According to Ryan Sitton, Texas producers have developed new technologies and methodologies that have led to increased crude production thus enabling them to capitalize on opportunities that were once considered unobtainable. These innovations by Texas producers make the Permian Basin and Eagle Ford Shale attractive areas for oil and gas investors and with an expected rise in crude prices, this increases the positive outlook all the more.

Trump Admin Removes Obama-Era Fossil Fuels Valuation Rule

SEOadmin

Oil and Gas Current Events

Oil and Gas Interesting Facts

Permian Basin Oil News

Uncategorized

Crude Oil

Donald J Trump

Government Regulations

On Monday, the U.S. Department of the Interior announced that the Consolidated ...

On Monday, the U.S. Department of the Interior announced that the Consolidated Federal Oil and Gas and Federal and Indian Coal Valuation Reform Rule (Valuation Rule) would be repealed effective September 6, 2017.

“Repealing the Valuation Rule provides a clean slate to create workable valuation regulations,” said Secretary of the Interior Ryan Zinke in a statement. “We are committed to working closely with stakeholders and the newly chartered Royalty Policy Committee to explore options for future rulemakings and to avoid the structural defects that were found in the prior rule. The Department and the Office of Natural Resources Revenue remain committed to collecting every dollar due. These are taxpayer and American Indian assets, and the public and American Indians deserve an accurate accounting and valuation.”

House Natural Resources Committee Chairman Rob Bishop (R-UT) came out in support of the decision to repeal the Valuation Rule. Bishop said, “This rescindment is another important step by the Trump administration to position Interior as a facilitator of responsible energy development.”

Back in April, numerous Congressional Western Caucus Members showed their support of Interior Secretary Zinke’s proposal to repeal the Valuation Rule in its entirety by issuing statements voicing their support.

Congressional Western Caucus Chairman Paul A. Gosar D.D.S. (AZ-04) said in his statement, “I am thrilled to hear that Secretary Zinke is taking action to roll back another duplicative and costly regulation from the Obama Administration. ONRR’s valuation rule would disproportionately impact small producers by burying them with compliance costs, ultimately driving up energy prices for everyday consumers. By taking steps to repeal this unconstitutional tax on job creators, the Trump Administration continues to follow through on the promise to get America back on the path toward energy independence and job creation.”

Representative Steve Scalise (LA-01) commented, “Let’s be clear—the ONRR mineral valuation rule was nothing but a shadow tax on American energy. In my home state of Louisiana, it meant reduced state revenue sharing dollars, hindering our ability to make major investments to restore our coast and protect Louisiana families and businesses from devastating storms. I applaud Secretary Zinke’s action to begin withdrawing this damaging rule, and look forward to working with the Department of Interior to promote safe and responsible energy production throughout the U.S.” Rep. Scalise, who serves as House Majority Whip, was shot and badly wounded by a gunman targeting the congressional baseball practice in mid-June.

The repeal of the Valuation Rule is another in a long line of regulations and proposed regulations that have been rescinded or delayed by the Trump administration. White House Budget Chief Mick Mulvaney released a report showing that in the first five months of the Trump presidency, 860 proposed regulatory actions have been withdrawn or delayed. The OPEC cartel is having a hard time swallowing that fact.

Crude output in the Permian has basically offset the production cuts imposed by OPEC, which poses a threat to the stranglehold that OPEC has had on global oil markets for decades.

“People just don’t seem to realize how big the Permian is. It will eventually pass the Ghawar field in Saudi Arabia, and that is the biggest in the world,” said Scott Sheffield, founder of Pioneer Natural Resources.

Sheffield goes on to speculate that Permian crude production could reach as high as 10 million barrels per day within ten years, which is almost five times its current production rate.

OilPrice.com reported, “The Permian pays off better than any other field. Occidental Petroleum Corp., which thinks of the Permian as its ‘growth engine,’ has indicated it is keeping its primary focus on its 2.5 million acres there, where production costs are so low a price threshold below $40/barrel still assures profitability. The Permian’s so rich, one Occidental exec noted to Natural Gas Intel, “It is pretty hard to drill a dry hole there.”

CNBC reported, “One of the hottest stories this year is the bounty of the Permian Basin, which runs beneath Texas and New Mexico and offers a new prosperity to the likes of even an Exxon Mobil, which can profit with $40 oil because of technological drilling advances pioneered by the U.S. industry.”

When OPEC started the price war over two years ago, the U.S. shale boom had the appearance of being all but over. However, its resilience was underestimated by OPEC. Instead of falling prey to Saudi Arabia and OPEC’s struggle for crude market share, the U.S. shale industry, particularly in the Permian Basin, continues to thrive and looks to usher in U.S. dominance in the global oil market.

<img recent upswing in domestic crude production, particularly in the Permian Basin, is on pace to outperform the shale boom of 2011 through 2015.

Julian Lee posted a recent article on Bloomberg that goes into great detail on the new shale boom and it affects OPEC and the world oil market.

Lee said, “The current boom in U.S. oil production is even stronger now than the run from July 2011 to April 2015. And this is with oil prices at half their previous level and before President Donald Trump has done anything to meet his pledge to ‘lift the restrictions on American energy and allow this wealth to pour into our communities.’ Output growth could accelerate if prices rise, or costs fall further.”

Lee goes on to write about the OPEC price war targeting the U.S. shale industry, “OPEC launched a strategy to protect market share in 2014 with a specific aim to knock out high-cost oil production such as shale. After the group succumbed to internal financial pressures and agreed in November to cut output by around 1.2 million barrels a day, Saudi oil minister Khalid Al-Falih said he didn’t expect a big supply response from American shale producers in 2017.”

During the first shale boom, crude production rose at an average monthly rate of 93,000 barrels per day. However, in the current shale boom, production rates are growing at an average monthly rate of 125,000 barrels per day.

The U.S. shale industry is now ‘leaner and meaner’ as a result of the oil price plunge of 2015. The oilfield crews are the best of the best. Technology has improved and more automation is coming into play. The process is becoming more streamlined and efficient and companies are able to go into production more quickly and at less cost.

This raises an interesting question, “Is it possible that the Saudi-led OPEC price war against the U.S. shale industry backfired?”

Perhaps OPEC underestimated the tenacity of U.S. oil producers and good ol’ American ingenuity.

RELATED >> Staging the Next Boom: Shale 2.0

Permian to Corpus Pipeline Proposed by TexStar

SEOadmin

Oil and Gas Current Events

Oil and Gas Interesting Facts

Permian Basin Oil News

Uncategorized

EPIC Pipeline

Permian Basin

TexStar Midstream Logistics along with Castleton Commodities International and Ironwood Midstream Energy ...

TexStar Midstream Logistics along with Castleton Commodities International and Ironwood Midstream Energy Partners are planning a 730-mile pipeline that extends from the Permian Basin southeast to Corpus Christi.

The pipeline, dubbed ‘EPIC,’
