<a href ="../luke/4.htm">Luke 4:1–13</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/4-1.htm"><b>1</b></a></span>Then was Jesus led up by the Spirit into the wilderness, to be tempted by the devil: <A name="3"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/4-2.htm"><b>2</b></a></span>there having fasted forty days and forty nights, he at length grew hungry. <A name="4"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/4-3.htm"><b>3</b></a></span>whereupon the tempter came to him, and said, "If thou be the Son of God, command these stones to become bread." <A name="5"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/4-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>but Jesus answered him, It is written, "Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every thing that God shall prescribe."<p> <A name="6"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/4-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>then the devil took Jesus with him to Jerusalem, and having set him on the wing of the temple, he said to him,<p> <A name="7"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/4-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>if you are the Son of God, throw your self down: for it is written, "he will charge his angels to take care of you, and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest you bruise your foot against a stone."<p> <A name="8"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/4-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>Jesus replied, it is likewise written, "Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God."<p> <A name="9"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/4-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>Again, the devil accompanyed him up a very high mountain, and representing to him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them: all these things, <A name="10"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/4-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>said he, will I give you, if you will prostrate your self and worship me. <A name="11"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/4-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>Then said Jesus to him, get thee hence Satan: for it it written, "Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve." <A name="12"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/4-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>whereupon the devil left him, and immediately angels came and ministred unto him.<p> <A name="13"></a><p class="hdg">Jesus Begins His Ministry<br /><span class="cross">(<a href ="../mark/1.htm#14">Mark 1:14–15</a>; <a href ="../luke/4.htm#14">Luke 4:14–15</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/4-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>After this, Jesus having heard that John was confined in prison, retired into Galilee. <A name="14"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/4-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>and leaving Nazareth, he came and dwelt in Capernaum, a maritime town upon the confines of Zabulon and Nepthalim: <A name="15"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/4-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>whereby those words of Esaias the prophet, had their full effect, "the land of Zabulon,<p> <A name="16"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/4-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>and the land of Nephthalim, lying upon the sea, and about Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles:<p> <A name="17"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/4-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>the people which sat in darkness, saw a great light: and to those who sat in the region and shadow of death, light is sprung up."<p> <A name="18"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/4-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>from that time Jesus began to preach, "Repent, said he, for the kingdom of the Messiah draws nigh."<p> <A name="19"></a><p class="hdg">The First Disciples<br /><span class="cross">(<a href ="../mark/1.htm#16">Mark 1:16–20</a>; <a href ="../luke/6.htm#17">Luke 6:17–19</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/4-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>Thus went Jesus about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all sorts of diseases and infirmities among the people:<p> <A name="25"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/4-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>so that his fame was spread over all Syria: and they brought unto him all sick people that were afflicted with any diseases or pains, demoniacs, lunatics, and paralytics;
