Give to arXiv today and help shape the future of science.

arXiv Giving Day is a part of Cornell Giving Day, which is facilitated by our parent organization, Cornell University. On March 13th, we ask both the Cornell community, and the scientific community at large, to come together in support of important causes that help foster inclusive education, equitable scholarship, and scientific innovation.

The possibilities and potential for scientific discovery provided by arXiv are limitless—but our resources aren’t. arXiv is open and free to use for all, but it is not free to operate. arXiv is a critical community resource, and we depend on you to help us stay fast, free to use, and open for all.

100% of your contribution today will go towards supporting arXiv’s infrastructure, operations, and special initiatives.

arXiv relies on our community for their support – the majority of arXiv’s budget comes from the contributions of our community. arXiv is incredibly grateful for continued support from the Simons Foundation and in-kind support from Cornell University. We are also thankful this Giving Day to have our very first match, provided by our very own arXiv Lab Hugging Face! This generous match allows your gifts to arXiv today to go even further.

The future of science starts today, and we couldn’t do it without you. Thank you for your contribution, whether that is through a gift today, or simply through the use of arXiv in your work and studies. We are proud to provide a platform that helps you share your research with the world.

Let’s work towards a bright future for open science and discovery together.

We’re Hiring! We share our monthly submission data on our stats page (which houses lots of interesting break downs of the data).

In the month of October of 2024, there were a total of 24,226 new submissions to arXiv, beating the previous monthly record from July 2024 of 21,794 new submissions. October has historically been a heavy submission month for arXiv – in October of 2023, there were a total of 20,710 new submissions to arXiv. The very first time arXiv monthly broke the 20,000 marker for number of submissions received in a single month was May 2023.

This brings arXiv’s overall total submission count, from August 1991 to the end of October 2024, to 2,597,322!

Of arXiv’s 9 scientific subject areas covered, the subject area with the most submissions in October 2024 was computer science. Within that subject area, the top categories within Computer Science during the month of October 2024 were cs.LG (Machine Learning), cs.CV (Computer Vision) and cs.CL (Computation and Language) which alone accounted for over 6,000 new submissions to arXiv this past month.

For those that want to dive into the data, visit https://arxiv.org/stats/main. Because all editorial staff will be participating in this professional development, it will temporarily affect arXiv’s mailings, help desk, and announcement schedule. This brief change will only affect the announcement of new submissions; arXiv servers will otherwise remain in operation, existing papers will still be available to browse, and arXiv will be accepting new submissions during this time.

Submissions to arXiv are typically made public on arXiv.org and announced by email on a regular schedule. As the full arXiv staff gathers together for a full day of team-building and project planning, announcements will be slightly deferred.

As you plan your submissions to arXiv in the next few days, please be aware of the following changes:

Tuesday, October 8, 2024. No announcement or help desk support. Articles received and accepted at or after 14:00ET Monday, October 7, 2024, and before 14:00ET Wednesday October 9, 2024 will be announced on Wednesday October 9, 2024 20:00ET.

To stay up to date on arXiv news and changes to the announcement schedule, subscribe to the arXiv blog or follow us on social (Twitter/X and LinkedIn) for timely updates.

arXiv database issues have been resolved.

Charles Frankston

Uncategorized

Processing of new submissions is now back to normal. After many years of service, all remaining arXiv mirrors will be officially shut down after Sunday, September 15, 2024.

The arXiv mirrors were originally created in an attempt to provide better local access to the arXiv corpus. In the early days of both arXiv and the internet, local mirrors were the best way to facilitate speed for arXiv users across the globe. arXiv’s mirror network expanded in the late 1990’s as arXiv grew, and for decades they were heavily used and provided faithful backups and replicas of arXiv’s scientific corpus.

As the modern internet has improved and arXiv has updated to a fully cloud-centric architecture for our services, geographic locality is no longer the determining factor it once was for speed of use for international arXiv users. Now, most users close to arXiv mirrors have better access to the main arxiv.org site than to the “nearby” mirror. Because of this, over time the utility and utilization of the arXiv mirrors has dwindled significantly (many down to near zero). While, until now, arXiv has continued to provide replication services to all mirrors, in the last few years, most of these read-only mirrors have shut down on their own or stopped accepting updates.

The arXiv mirror network served a role – acting as a backup for the corpus, allowing some degree of load distribution, and providing improved access for users who were geographically closer to a mirror – that is no longer necessary. arXiv now has multiple backups for the arXiv corpus in place, and the Fastly CDN (Content Delivery Network) that we use to deliver content provides excellent service throughout the world.

The arXiv mirrors took significant effort of both arXiv staff and hosting volunteer institutions to maintain, implement and update, and we are thankful for the volunteers across the world who gave their time, expertise, and effort over the years to maintain them and help arXiv reach users globally.

arXiv shutting down replication services for all mirror sites will not affect arXiv users. If you have questions about this, or other arXiv updates, we welcome your comments below.
