It’s the story of Julia Staab, the original proprietress of the house in the l9th century, before it became La Posada. Author Nordhaus is her great-great granddaughter.</p><p>Dark-eyed Julia is said to haunt parts of the hotel, appearing in a long black gown.</p><p>Second, chef Todd Hall, who just arrived, dripping credentials, prepares knock-your-napkin-off dishes ranging from cucumber and melon gazpacho with jalapeño ice, to rock hen baked in Santa Fe red rock clay, to a chocolate extravaganza in the shape of a pueblo.</p><p>This month, Hall opened a new restaurant at La Posada, appropriately named Julia.</p><p>When Julia Staab was alive — she died in 1896 — she planted apple, crab apple and apricot trees on the property with the help of Archbishop Jean-Baptiste Lamy. (Willa Cather’s beloved book <em>Death Comes for the Archbishop</em> was based on his life.)</p><p>Today, chef Hall plucks apricots from the 130-year-old tree and serves apricot foie gras.</p><p>As you enter the hotel lobby, you can see the French Empire architecture of the Staab House and admire her trend-setting taste in European furnishings, banisters, doorways and carved woodwork.</p><p>The hotel includes the main building and several adobe casitas on the property.</p><p>On Friday afternoons at 4 p.m., art curator Sara Eyestone gives free history talks, where you’ll learn more about Julia.</p><p>What else is new?
