Hoping to fill openings created when a pair of long-serving Democratic lawmakers opted to run for mayor, the four candidates were waging two drastically different races: One is an all-Democratic, eye-gouging affair; in the other, the Democratic and GOP contenders have kept a polite distance. When their Senate race slugfest is over, state Reps. Trey Martinez Fischer and Jos\u00e9 Men\u00e9ndez both still will be in the Legislature, but there could be awkward moments ahead for them after their bruising race. One of them will ascend to the 31-member Texas Senate to replace District 26 state Sen. Leticia Van de Putte, now a mayoral candidate, and the other will remain in the 150-member House. Also running for mayor is former state Rep. Mike Villarreal, D-San Antonio, who has relinquished the District 123 seat. In Tuesday's runoff to replace him are Democratic former Councilman Diego Bernal and GOP candidate Nunzio Previtera, a member of the State Republican Executive Committee who last week drew the endorsement of Gov. Greg Abbott. With relatively few campaign ads and events, the House race has been tame compared to the Senate contest, where spending by candidates and third-party groups has topped $2.3 million. About 406,000 Bexar County residents are registered to vote in the two overlapping districts, with more than 86,000 of them in the House district that includes Castle Hills. When five days of early voted ended Friday night, about 12,000 people had voted in the two runoffs. Citing robust mail balloting and early voting, Bexar County election officials said participation in the runoffs appears to higher than in the Jan. 6 special election, whose scheduling after the Christmas holidays was believed to have dampened turnout. Bernal narrowly missed winning his race outright, capturing 47 percent of the vote to Previtera's 21 percent, atop a six-candidate field. Since Jan. 6, the candidates have dueled at a distance, without personal attacks. They've had few joint appearances along the way to air their partisan-aligned differences. Operating without the big bucks of the Senate campaign, the two House candidates have relied on direct mail, block-walking, social media and word of mouth. During the Friday evening rush hour, Bernal stood at Hildebrand and San Pedro avenues holding a campaign sign for honking motorists. When the Senate runoff started, pundits predicted the voting records of Men\u00e9ndez and Martinez Fischer would seem similar to many voters. The two Democrats both have served in the House since 2001. Five weeks of brutal runoff campaigning later - amid dueling allegations of desception and hypocrisy - a different picture has emerged. In the battle's final days, Martinez Fischer stepped up attacks on Men\u00e9ndez over his efforts to woo GOP and other conservative voters. He's flooded the district's mailboxes with almost daily placemat-size ads that mix attacks on Men\u00e9ndez with self-praise. \"I have an opponent who thinks he can tell Democrats he's a Democrat and tell Republicans he's a Republican,\" Martinez Fischer told supporters Saturday at his North Side headquarters before a block-walking blitz. \"We know from early voting that Republicans are voting ... and the only person for them to vote for is Jos\u00e9,\" he said with a tone of concern. But Men\u00e9ndez made no apology for seeking bipartisan backing. Greeting supporters Saturday at VFW Post 9174 on the West Side, Men\u00e9ndez said that's what it takes to be effective - something he learned on the City Council. He said it's puzzling that he's portrayed as both a flaming liberal and in sympathy with the GOP. Describing third-party ads that attack him as a liberal Democrat, Men\u00e9ndez said \"the mailers say 'Jos\u00e9 is the champion of Obamacare,' and 'Jos\u00e9 is the big liberal spender.' So which is it, Trey? They say I'm this big Democrat but you're saying I'm not. I find that unbelievably disingenuous,\" he said. \"I believe that what he says about wanting to fight for you is true, but ... we've been effective in different ways,\" Men\u00e9ndez told a Democratic club earlier this month. Trey Martinez Fischer and José Menéndez both still will be in the Legislature, but there could be awkward moments ahead for them after their bruising race.</p> <p>One of them will ascend to the 31-member Texas Senate to replace District 26 state Sen. Leticia Van de Putte, now a mayoral candidate, and the other will remain in the 150-member House.</p> <p>Also running for mayor is former state Rep. Mike Villarreal, D-San Antonio, who has relinquished the District 123 seat.</p> <p>In Tuesday’s runoff to replace him are Democratic former Councilman Diego Bernal and GOP candidate Nunzio Previtera, a member of the State Republican Executive Committee who last week drew the endorsement of Gov. Greg Abbott.</p> <p>With relatively few campaign ads and events, the House race has been tame compared to the Senate contest, where spending by candidates and third-party groups has topped $2.3 million.</p> <p>About 406,000 Bexar County residents are registered to vote in the two overlapping districts, with more than 86,000 of them in the House district that includes Castle Hills.</p> <p>When five days of early voted ended Friday night, about 12,000 people had voted in the two runoffs. Citing robust mail balloting and early voting, Bexar County election officials said participation in the runoffs appears to higher than in the Jan. 6 special election, whose scheduling after the Christmas holidays was believed to have dampened turnout.</p>  <p>Bernal narrowly missed winning his race outright, capturing 47 percent of the vote to Previtera’s 21 percent, atop a six-candidate field. Since Jan. 6, the candidates have dueled at a distance, without personal attacks. They’ve had few joint appearances along the way to air their partisan-aligned differences.</p> <p>Operating without the big bucks of the Senate campaign, the two House candidates have relied on direct mail, block-walking, social media and word of mouth. During the Friday evening rush hour, Bernal stood at Hildebrand and San Pedro avenues holding a campaign sign for honking motorists.</p> <p>When the Senate runoff started, pundits predicted the voting records of Menéndez and Martinez Fischer would seem similar to many voters. The two Democrats both have served in the House since 2001. Five weeks of brutal runoff campaigning later — amid dueling allegations of desception and hypocrisy — a different picture has emerged.</p> <p>In the battle’s final days, Martinez Fischer stepped up attacks on Menéndez over his efforts to woo GOP and other conservative voters. He’s flooded the district’s mailboxes with almost daily placemat-size ads that mix attacks on Menéndez with self-praise.</p> <p>“I have an opponent who thinks he can tell Democrats he’s a Democrat and tell Republicans he’s a Republican,” Martinez Fischer told supporters Saturday at his North Side headquarters before a block-walking blitz.</p> <aside class="article--content-inline"><aside class="zone"></aside></aside> <p>“We know from early voting that Republicans are voting … and the only person for them to vote for is José,” he said with a tone of concern.</p>  <p>But Menéndez made no apology for seeking bipartisan backing. Greeting supporters Saturday at VFW Post 9174 on the West Side, Menéndez said that’s what it takes to be effective — something he learned on the City Council. He said it’s puzzling that he’s portrayed as both a flaming liberal and in sympathy with the GOP.</p> <p>Describing third-party ads that attack him as a liberal Democrat, Menéndez said “the mailers say 'José is the champion of Obamacare,’ and 'José is the big liberal spender.’ So which is it, Trey? They say I’m this big Democrat but you’re saying I’m not. I find that unbelievably disingenuous,” he said.</p> <p>“I believe that what he says about wanting to fight for you is true, but … we’ve been effective in different ways,” Menéndez told a Democratic club earlier this month.</p> <p>Noting that plenty of voters had not yet cast ballots, Menéndez said “of those 400,000 that are still out there, there are plenty of good people — lots of good
