This term is often used in the context of faith, character, and the discernment of God's will. The Berean Standard Bible provides several instances where this concept is explored, reflecting its importance in the spiritual life of believers.

Testing and Examination

In the Old Testament, the idea of proving is frequently associated with God's testing of His people. For example, in Exodus 16:4 , God tests the Israelites' obedience through the provision of manna: "Then the LORD said to Moses, 'Behold, I will rain down bread from heaven for you. Each day the people are to go out and gather enough for that day. In this way I will test them to see whether or not they will follow My instructions.'" Here, proving is linked to obedience and trust in God's provision.

Similarly, in Deuteronomy 8:2 , the Israelites are reminded of their journey in the wilderness: "Remember that the LORD your God led you all the way these forty years in the wilderness, so that He might humble you and test you in order to know what was in your heart, whether or not you would keep His commandments." This passage highlights the purpose of divine testing as a means to reveal the true condition of the heart.

Proving Faith and Character

In the New Testament, the concept of proving is often related to the testing of faith and character. James 1:3 states, "because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance." Here, the proving of faith is seen as a process that strengthens and refines the believer, producing perseverance and maturity.

The Apostle Paul also speaks to the idea of proving in Romans 12:2 : "Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what is the good, pleasing, and perfect will of God." This verse emphasizes the importance of spiritual transformation and discernment, enabling believers to prove and embrace God's will.

Discernment and Approval

The act of proving is closely tied to discernment and the approval of what is good and true. In 1 Thessalonians 5:21 , Paul instructs believers to "Test all things. Hold fast to what is good." This directive encourages Christians to examine teachings and practices carefully, retaining only what aligns with God's truth.

Furthermore, in 2 Corinthians 13:5 , Paul urges self-examination: "Examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith; test yourselves. Can’t you see for yourselves that Jesus Christ is in you—unless you actually fail the test?" This call to self-proving underscores the necessity of personal reflection and assurance of one's standing in faith.

Conclusion

The biblical concept of proving involves a multifaceted process of testing, examining, and demonstrating authenticity in various aspects of life. Whether through divine testing, the refining of faith, or the discernment of truth, proving serves as a vital component in the believer's journey toward spiritual maturity and alignment with God's will.
Webster's Revised Unabridged Dictionary
1. It is for the most part in the first (original) sense that the word is found in Scripture. In the Old Testament it is most frequently the translation of nacah, primarily "to lift," hence, to weigh (Genesis 42:15, 16, etc.). God is said to "prove" His people, i.e. to test or try them for their good (Genesis 22:1 Exodus 15:25 Deuteronomy 8:16, etc.). The Psalmist prays that God may prove him (Psalm 26:2). The word is frequently rendered "tempt." See TEMPT. The word bachan, primarily "to try by heat," has a similar meaning (Psalm 17:3, the heart, like metal, purified from dross; compare Job 23:10 Psalm 7:9 Malachi 3:2, etc.). In the New Testament the word most frequently rendered "prove" (sometimes "try") is dokimazo (Luke 14:19 Romans 12:2 2 Corinthians 8:8, 22; 2 Corinthians 13:5 Ephesians 5:10 1 Thessalonians 5:21). Peirazo, "to tempt," "to prove," used in both a good and a bad sense, frequently translated "tempt" (which see), is rendered "prove" in John 6:6, "This he said to prove him." Both Greek words occur frequently in Apocrypha (Wisdom and Ecclesiasticus). the Revised Version (British and American) has "prove" for "tempt" (Genesis 22:1); for, "make" (Job 24:25 Galatians 2:18); for "manifest" (Ecclesiastes 3:18); for "examine" (1 Corinthians 11:28); for "try" (1 Corinthians 3:13 1 John 4:1), etc.

W.
