and I said<MH559> to them, “Drink<MH8354> wine<MH3196>!” <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/35-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>But they said<MH559>, “We will not drink<MH8354> wine<MH3196>, for Jonadab<MH3082> the son<MH1121> of Rechab<MH7394>, our father<MH1>, commanded<MH6680> us, saying<MH559>, ‘You shall not drink<MH8354> wine<MH3196>, you or your sons<MH1121>, forever<MH5704, 5769>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/35-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>You shall not build<MH1129> a house<MH1004>, and you shall not sow<MH2232> seed<MH2233> nor plant<MH5193> a vineyard<MH3754>, nor <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[b]</a></span>own<MH1961> one; but you shall live<MH3427> in tents<MH168> all<MH3605> your days<MH3117>, so<MH4616> that<MH4616> you may live<MH2421a> many<MH7227a> days<MH3117> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>in the land<MH127> where<MH834, 8033> you live<MH1481a> as<MH1481a> strangers<MH1481a>.’ <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/35-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>And we have obeyed<MH8085> the voice<MH6963> of Jonadab<MH3082> the son<MH1121> of Rechab<MH7394>, our father<MH1>, in all<MH3605> that he commanded<MH6680> us, not to drink<MH8354> wine<MH3196> all<MH3605> our days<MH3117>, we, our wives<MH802>, our sons<MH1121>, or our daughters<MH1323>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/35-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>nor<MH1115> to build<MH1129> ourselves houses<MH1004> to live<MH3427> in; and we do not have<MH1961> a vineyard<MH3754>, a field<MH7704>, or seed<MH2233>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/35-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>But we have lived<MH3427> <i>only</i> in tents<MH168>, and have obeyed<MH8085> and have done<MH6213a> according to all<MH3605> that our father<MH1> Jonadab<MH3082> commanded<MH6680> us. <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/35-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>However, when Nebuchadnezzar<MH5019> king<MH4428> of Babylon<MH894> came<MH5927> up<MH5927> against<MH413> the land<MH776>, we said<MH559>, ‘Come<MH935>, and let’s go<MH935> to Jerusalem<MH3389> away<MH4480, 6440> from the army<MH2428> of the Chaldeans<MH3778> and the army<MH2428> of the Arameans<MH758>.’ So we have lived<MH3427> in Jerusalem<MH3389>.” <p class="hdg">Judah Rebuked</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/35-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>Then the word<MH1697> of the LORD<MH3068> came<MH1961> to Jeremiah<MH3414>, saying<MH559>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/35-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>“This<MH3541> is<MH3541> what<MH3541> the LORD<MH3068> of armies<MH6635>, the God<MH430> of Israel<MH3478> says<MH559>: ‘Go<MH1980> and say<MH559> to the people<MH376> of Judah<MH3063> and the inhabitants<MH3427> of Jerusalem<MH3389>, “Will you not accept<MH3947> instruction<MH4148> by listening<MH8085> to My words<MH1697>?” declares<MH5002> the LORD<MH3068>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/35-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>“The words<MH1697> of Jonadab<MH3082> the son<MH1121> of Rechab<MH7394> have been followed<MH6965>, which<MH834> he commanded<MH6680> his sons<MH1121>: not to drink<MH8354> wine<MH3196>. And they do not drink<MH8354> <i>wine</i> to this<MH2088> day<MH3117>, for they have obeyed<MH8085> their father’s<MH1> command<MH4687>. But I have spoken<MH1696> to you again<MH7925> and again<MH1696>, yet you have not listened<MH8085> to Me. <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/35-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>Also I have sent<MH7971> to you all<MH3605> My servants<MH5650> the prophets<MH5030>, sending<MH7971> <i>them</i> again<MH7925> and again<MH7971>, saying<MH559>: ‘Turn<MH7725> now<MH4994> every<MH376> person<MH376> from his evil<MH7451a> way<MH1870> and amend<MH3190> your deeds<MH4611>, and do not follow<MH1980, 310> other<MH312> gods<MH430> to worship<MH5647> them.
