They were known for their hostility towards Israel, first attacking them at Rephidim (Exodus 17:8-16). The Negev is a desert region in southern Israel, characterized by arid conditions. This area was strategically important as it served as a gateway to the southern parts of Canaan. The presence of the Amalekites in the Negev posed a significant threat to the Israelites, as they were known for their guerrilla warfare tactics and raids.
the Hittites, Jebusites, and Amorites live in the hill country;
The Hittites were an ancient people originally from Anatolia, known for their advanced civilization and military prowess. By the time of the Israelite spies, some Hittites had settled in Canaan. The Jebusites were the original inhabitants of Jerusalem, a city that would later become the political and spiritual center of Israel under King David. The Amorites were a Semitic people who occupied large parts of Mesopotamia and Canaan. The hill country refers to the central mountainous region of Canaan, which provided natural fortifications and was difficult to conquer. These groups' presence in the hill country indicated a formidable challenge for the Israelites, as these areas were well-defended and strategically significant.
and the Canaanites live by the sea and along the Jordan.”
The Canaanites were a collection of various city-states and peoples inhabiting the land of Canaan. They were known for their advanced urban culture and polytheistic religion, which often led to moral and spiritual corruption. Living by the sea refers to the coastal regions of the Mediterranean, where cities like Tyre and Sidon were located. These areas were crucial for trade and cultural exchange. Along the Jordan refers to the fertile Jordan Valley, which was essential for agriculture and sustenance. The Canaanites' control of these regions highlighted the economic and strategic challenges the Israelites would face in their conquest of the Promised Land.
Persons / Places / Events
1. Amalekites
A nomadic tribe known for their hostility towards Israel. They are not numbered among the inhabitants of Canaan proper. The Canaanites dwell by the sea, and by the coast of Jordan. It is not easy to say in what sense the word "Canaanites" is used here. At one time it is the name of one tribe amongst many, all descended from Canaan, the son of Ham, which dwelt in the land of promise; at another time it is apparently synonymous with "Amorites," or rather includes both them and the allied tribes (cf. e.g., Judges 1:9). It is possible, though far from certain, that "Canaanites" in this place may mean "Phoenicians," since Sidon was the first-born of Canaan (Genesis 10:15), and the northern portion of the maritime plain was certainly in their possession, and probably the upper part of the Ghor, or coast of Jordan. It would appear that the Philistines had not at this time made themselves masters of the plain, although they dwelt in some parts of it (see on Exodus 13:17).

Parallel Commentaries ...

Hebrew
The Amalekites
עֲמָלֵ֥ק (‘ă·mā·lêq)
Noun - proper - masculine singular
Strong's 6002: Amalek -- a descendant of Esau, also his posterity

live
יוֹשֵׁ֖ב (yō·wō·šêḇ)
Verb - Qal - Participle - masculine singular
Strong's 3427: To sit down, to dwell, to remain, to settle, to marry

in the land
בְּאֶ֣רֶץ (bə·’e·reṣ)
Preposition-b |
