To that end, today we’re introducing search autocomplete and ‘People you follow’ search results to twitter.com. In addition to <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20120708180133/http://engineering.twitter.com/2012/05/related-queries-and-spelling.html">recent improvements</a> like related query suggestions, spelling corrections and more relevant search results, these updates make it even easier to immediately get closer to the things you care about.<br/> <br/> Search autocomplete shows you the most likely terms for your query as you enter it — especially useful if you’re trying to follow the hashtag for an event or you’re looking for a certain Twitter account. Twitter has been using a translation community model since 2009. The demand has been so high that we built a console - <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20120708180133/http://translate.twttr.com/">Twitter’s Translation Center</a>, where users can help suggest translations for the site. With each official Twitter language launch, we saw more and more demand from users to help us translate Twitter into their language.<br/><br/>On May 16th, we opened up the Translation Center to <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20120708180133/http://translate.twttr.com/cms/node/1810">six additional languages</a>. We worked to ensure the quality, consistency and unified voice of our translators were in our tools - via automation. Today, we are making two of those languages available for all users to see and change their language settings to - Catalan and Ukrainian. The translations you see live on Twitter.com are based on translation completion and community approval. In order to use Twitter in Catalan or Ukrainian, please go to your language settings today. <div><br/></div><div>If you see a translation that doesn’t feel right, the best way to fix it is to log into the Translation Center and vote for the best choice. The phrase score will adjust over time, and the right translation will find its way into Twitter.com. If you see inconsistencies in the content, you can get involved in the discussions with your community at the <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20120708180133/http://translate.twttr.com/cms/">language forums</a>. Beyond the fireworks and barbecue, July 4th serves as an important reminder of the need to hold governments accountable, especially on behalf of those who may not have a chance to do so themselves.<br/> <br/> With that in mind, today we’re unveiling our first Twitter Transparency Report. Inspired by the great <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20120708180133/http://www.google.com/transparencyreport/">work</a> done by our peers @<a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20120708180133/https://twitter.com/google">Google</a>, the primary goal of this report is to shed more light on: <br/> <br/> <ul><li>government requests received for user information,</li> <li>government requests received to withhold content, and</li> <li>DMCA takedown notices received from copyright holders.</li> </ul><br/> The report also provides insight into whether or not we take action on these requests.<br/> <br/> One of our goals is to grow Twitter in a way that makes us proud. This ideal informs many of our policies and guides us in making difficult decisions. One example is our long-standing policy to proactively notify users of requests for their account information unless we’re prohibited by law; another example is transmitting DMCA takedown notices and requests to withhold content to <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20120708180133/http://www.chillingeffects.org/twitter">Chilling Effects</a>. Commentators, fans and athletes around the world supported their teams in song, in <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20120708180133/https://twitter.com/publisportmx/status/218437794287206400">face paint</a> and <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20120708180133/https://twitter.com/hashtag/euro2012">in Tweets</a>.<br/><br/>My colleague @philogb created a visual summary of #Euro2012 in order to understand how people followed <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20120708180133/https://euro2012.twitter.com/">the tournament on Twitter here</a>.<br/><br/>This data visualization shows how often people mentioned Europe’s top 16 national teams from the group stages through the final between Spain and Italy. You can see how often all of the teams were mentioned throughout the tournament and look at how mentions compare for competitors for each match. These different perspectives should give you a strong sense of how people reacted during the matches on Twitter. But more importantly, we want to support engineering education and make it more accessible to young women.<br/> <br/> All of which leads to our new partnership with <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20120708180133/http://www.girlswhocode.com/">Girls Who Code</a>, a program founded by Reshma Saujani (<a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20120708180133/https://twitter.com/#!/ReshmaSaujani">@reshmasaujani</a>), designed to introduce high school girls to software development skills. Through our investment of time, energy and money, we will be working with Girls Who Code to empower young women and provide them with the skills and resources necessary to pursue a career in engineering and technology.<br/> <br/> Girls Who Code will begin this summer in New York City with an 8-week intensive program to teach basic principles of computer science and coding as well as sessions on design, research and entrepreneurship. Each participant will be matched with a female mentor from a tech company, and she and her mentor will work closely throughout the program and afterwards. <br/> <br/> We cannot wait to see what the future holds for Girls Who Code, and we certainly hope to hire at least some of the participants in a few years. At approximately 9:00am PDT, we discovered that Twitter was inaccessible for all web users, and mobile clients were not showing new Tweets. We immediately began to investigate the issue and found that there was a cascading bug in one of our infrastructure components. This wasn’t due to a hack or <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20120708180133/http://blog.twitter.com/2012/06/our-new-nest.html">our new office</a> or Euro 2012 or <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20120708180133/https://twitter.com/elizakern/status/215902496680456192">GIF avatars</a>, as some have speculated today. A “cascading bug” is a bug with an effect that isn’t confined to a particular software element, but rather its effect “cascades” into other elements as well. One of the characteristics of such a bug is that it can have a significant impact on all users, worldwide, which was the case today. As soon as we discovered it, we took corrective actions, which included rolling back to a previous stable version of Twitter. </br> </br> We began recovery at around 10:10am PDT, dropped again around 10:40am PDT, and then began full recovery at 11:08am PDT. We are currently conducting a comprehensive review to ensure that we can avoid this chain of events in the future. </br> </br> For the past six months, we’ve enjoyed our highest marks for site reliability and stability ever: at least 99.96% and often 99.99%. In simpler terms, this means that in an average 24-hour period, twitter.com has been stable and available to everyone for roughly 23 hours, 59 minutes and 40-ish seconds. Not today though. </br> </br> We know how critical Twitter has become for you — for many of us. Every day, we bring people closer to their heroes, causes, political movements, and much more.
