col-sm-4 col-md-3 col-lg-2"> <div class="team-profile-teaser" data-body="<p>Jim is one of the most respected experts and entrepreneurs on issues related to children, education, and media and technology in the United States. He is the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Common Sense Media, the nation's leading nonpartisan organization dedicated to improving the lives of kids and families by providing the trustworthy information, education, and impactful voice they need to thrive in the 21st century.</p><p>Jim is also a nationally known author, having written the widely acclaimed book <em>Talking Back to Facebook </em>in 2012, as well as another highly successful book, <em>The Other Parent: The Inside Story of the Media's Effect on Our Children</em> in 2002. Prior to launching Common Sense, Jim was chairman and CEO of JP Kids, a leading educational kids' media company. Before that, he was the founder and president of Children Now, the highly respected national advocacy and media organization for children, which he founded in 1988. In addition, Jim co-founded the Center for the Next Generation with his younger brother Tom Steyer in 2012.</p><p>Jim has long been an award-winning adjunct professor at Stanford University, where he has taught popular courses for more than 30 years. He is an adjunct professor in the Stanford School of Education as well as the Center for Comparative Studies in Race and Ethnicity, teaching a variety of courses on civil rights, civil liberties, and education issues. Among other honors, Jim has received the university's highest teaching honor, the Walter J. Gores Award for Excellence in Teaching, which is awarded annually to three Stanford professors. He was also voted by the students to be Class Day speaker at Stanford's graduation exercises.</p><p>Jim began his professional career as a law clerk for Justice Allen Broussard of the California Supreme Court. He then served as a civil rights attorney, working for the NAACP Legal Defense Fund. There, he helped spearhead the Poverty and Justice Program, focused on developing national legal and legislative strategies on behalf of lower-income African Americans. In addition, while still in law school, Jim was a founder and original chairperson of the East Palo Alto Community Law Project. This nonprofit law office served for over 30 years as the primary source of legal services for lower-income families in East Palo Alto and has been the training ground for hundreds of students at Stanford Law School.</p><p>Jim's long-standing commitment to disadvantaged children and to teaching began decades ago when he was a remedial reading tutor to at-risk kids in New York City public schools. Since then, he has taught reading and math to disadvantaged students in Harlem, East Palo Alto, and Oakland, California, and he spent more than 10 years as a volunteer teacher to second-, third-, and fifth-graders in East Oakland.</p><p>In addition to his activities as an advocate, author, and teacher, Jim serves regularly as an expert commentator on many national TV and radio programs. He frequently appears on national television on shows and networks including <em>The Oprah Winfrey Show</em>, <em>The Today Show</em>, <em>Good Morning America</em>, <em>Fresh Air</em>, <em>The CBS Morning Show</em>, <em>CNN</em>, <em>Fox News</em>, MSNBC, and 2020.</p><p>Jim grew up in New York City and went to college at Stanford University. He graduated Phi Beta Kappa and was awarded the Lindsey Peters Award for Outstanding Work in American Government. After two years of community development work in Asia, he returned to Stanford Law School, from which he received his J.D. in 1983. Ellen has more than 25 years of experience launching and growing consumer online products and services. In 1992, Ellen founded Women.com, one of the first consumer internet companies. She grew it into the largest internet destination for women, taking it public in 1999. In 2001, Women.com merged with iVillage, and NBC acquired the combined entity. Next Ellen ran a regional staffing agency in the Bay Area, which she helped expand and subsequently sold in 2008 (the agency is now part of Care.com). She went on to lead marketing at Elance, a pioneering freelance talent platform (now Upwork). Ellen is the author of Women's Wire Web Directory (1997). She served on the board of the San Francisco Friends School (2008–2014). Beginning his career in financial services, David was senior vice president of financial operations at CSAA (AAA) in San Francisco and then managing director at Marsh, a global risk management and financial services organization, in New York City. Making a jump to nonprofit work, David served as the COO of TransitCenter, a New York-based national nonprofit formed to encourage the use of mass transit, and later as chief administrative officer at New Leaders for New Schools, where he spent several years building infrastructure, implementing systems, and driving strategy and planning. Highlights of David's community engagement include a four-year stint as a director and chair of the finance committee at the San Francisco AIDS Foundation, teaching technology skills at New York's Fortune Society (an organization whose mission is to support successful reentry from prison), and, most recently, serving as chair of Centro Del Pueblo, an organization providing educational and other services to families in San Francisco's Mission neighborhood.</p><p>Following undergraduate work at the University of California at Davis, David earned an M.B.A. at the Atkinson School of Management at Willamette University. Jill joined Common Sense in January 2005, built the editorial department with founding editor-in-chief Liz Perle. She oversees the ratings and reviews for all media channels including movies, streaming, TV, games, websites, apps, and books. She also oversees the content strategy and development for parenting advice. Jill also works closely with content partners including SkyUK, Hulu, Charter, DirecTV, Comcast, Netflix, Target.com, ATT, and more to further leverage the library of Common Sense Media reviews and advice.</p><p>In her time with Common Sense Media, Jill has been instrumental in evolving our ratings, reviews, and advice to keep up with where parents are. She has overseen the creation of our For Your Family recommendation engine, worked to refine and enhance the rating process, and continues to ensure the latest research on kids and media is incorporated into Common Sense advice and reviews. She has been involved in countless product launches, all while keeping the team on schedule to produce thousands of new reviews and hundreds of recommendation lists, each year.</p><p>Jill's commitment to Common Sense affords her the opportunity to help families avoid the TV shows she is devoted to. She serves as the resident expert on any and all reality TV, late '80s/'90s sitcoms, and other useless pop culture trivia that she claims is "for work." Danny first joined Common Sense in 2015 and returned again in 2020, and has led efforts to close the digital divide, protect children's online data privacy, hold tech companies accountable for online practices that harm kids, and expand access to and awareness of the child tax credit to lift children out of poverty. Danny started out as a reporter in Washington, D.C. covering Congress and the Administration. She retired from the daily business publication in June 2018 after 23 years as a key leader. The Chicago native also served as managing editor of the paper. She joined as a reporter and projects editor in 1995. As a reporter she covered nonprofits, finance, real estate, retail, travel, aviation, tourism, and sports business. Prior to the<em> Business Journal</em>, she was an editor for Independent Newspapers Inc., a community newspaper chain based in Scottsdale.</p><p>Before moving to the Valley in 1989, Ilana served as a reporter and editor for Pulitzer Newspapers in Chicago. An award-winning journalist, she also worked as a scriptwriter and associate producer for the NBC TV affiliate in Chicago. A 1986 graduate of the University of Illinois, Ilana earned B.A. degrees in mass communications and English.</p><p>Currently, Ilana is an associate professor at Arizona State University's Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communications. In addition, Ilana serves on the executive board of Gabriel's Angels and is a member of the prestigious women's professional associations Charter 100 and Central Phoenix Women.</p><p>Ilana is a longtime member of the Hon Kachina Board of Governors, which honors nonprofit leaders throughout Arizona, and she is a supporter of Debbie Gaby Charities, Ryan's House, New Pathways for Youth, the Arizona chapter of the YWCA, Valley of the Sun United Way, and the Southwest Autism Resource and Research Center (SARRC). She also is the 2019 co-chair of the Arizona Science Center's Galaxy Gala.</p><p>In 2014, Ilana was a Greater Phoenix Chamber of Commerce Athena Award finalist. In 2011, Sue began working for Common Sense in Chicago by partnering with educators and parents to help them create a culture where students use technology in a meaningful, thoughtful, and respectful way. Since moving to Los Angeles in 2014, Sue has provided educational leadership through motivating keynotes, professional development workshops, conference presentations, and consulting with districts across Southern California.</p><p>Prior to Common Sense, Sue was a researcher and educator. She worked with Abt Associates to manage an experimental study evaluating the efficacy of a computer-based literacy curriculum across 44 randomized Chicago public schools. Through the University of Illinois at Chicago School of Public Health, Sue conducted research on community food security,<strong> </strong>eventually teaching those same assessment methods to high school students to take civic action in their own neighborhoods. Sue conducted qualitative interviews evaluating nutritional practices among rural women in Vietnam using a community-based participatory Photovoice technique in partnership with the National Institute of Nutrition. Sue holds a master's degree in public health and an undergraduate degree in zoology and chemistry. She lives in a small house with a 13-year-old reader, an 11-year-old gamer, and a most clever musician.
