and he would drag<MG4951> away<MG4951> men<MG435> and women<MG1135> and put<MG3860> them in prison<MG5438>. <p class="hdg">Philip in Samaria</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/8-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>Therefore<MG3767>, those<MG3588> who had been scattered<MG1289> went<MG1330> through<MG1330> <i>places</i> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>preaching<MG2097> the word<MG3056>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/8-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>Philip<MG5376> went<MG2718> down<MG2718> to the city<MG4172> of Samaria<MG4540> and <i>began</i> proclaiming<MG2784> the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>Christ<MG5547> to them. <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/8-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>The crowds<MG3793> were paying<MG4337> attention<MG4337> with one<MG3661> mind<MG3661> to what was being said<MG3004> by Philip<MG5376>, as they heard<MG191> and saw<MG991> the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>signs<MG4592> which<MG3739> he was performing<MG4160>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/8-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>For <i>in the case of</i> many<MG4183> who had<MG2192> unclean<MG169> spirits<MG4151>, they were coming<MG1831> out<MG1831> <i>of them</i> shouting<MG994> with a loud<MG3173> voice<MG5456>; and many<MG4183> who had been paralyzed<MG3886> or limped<MG5560> <i>on crutches</i> were healed<MG2323>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/8-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>So<MG1161> there was much<MG4183> rejoicing<MG5479> in that city<MG4172>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/8-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>Now<MG1161> a man<MG435> named<MG3686> Simon<MG4613> had previously<MG4391> been<MG4391> practicing<MG3096> magic<MG3096> in the city<MG4172> and astonishing<MG1839> the people<MG1484> of Samaria<MG4540>, claiming<MG3004> to be someone<MG5100> great<MG3173>; <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/8-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>and all<MG3956> <i>the people,</i> from small<MG3398> to great<MG3173>, were paying<MG4337> attention<MG4337> to him, saying<MG3004>, “This<MG3778> man<MG3778> is the Power<MG1411> of God<MG2316> that is called<MG2564> Great<MG3173>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/8-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>And they were paying<MG4337> attention<MG4337> to him because<MG1223> for a long<MG2425> time<MG5550> he had astounded<MG1839> them with his magic<MG3095> arts<MG3095>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/8-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>But when<MG3753> they believed<MG4100> Philip<MG5376> as he was preaching<MG2097> the good<MG2097> news<MG2097> about<MG4012> the kingdom<MG932> of God<MG2316> and the name<MG3686> of Jesus<MG2424> Christ<MG5547>, both<MG5037> men<MG435> and women<MG1135> were being baptized<MG907>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/8-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>Now<MG1161> even<MG2532> Simon<MG4613> himself<MG846> believed<MG4100>; and after being baptized<MG907>, he continued<MG4342> on with Philip<MG5376>, and as he observed<MG2334> signs<MG4592> and great<MG3173> miracles<MG1411> taking<MG1096> place<MG1096>, he was <i>repeatedly</i> amazed<MG1839>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/8-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>Now<MG1161> when the apostles<MG652> in Jerusalem<MG2414> heard<MG191> that Samaria<MG4540> had received<MG1209> the word<MG3056> of God<MG2316>, they sent<MG649> them Peter<MG4074> and John<MG2491>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/8-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>who<MG3748> came<MG2597> down<MG2597> and prayed<MG4336> for them that they would receive<MG2983> the Holy<MG40> Spirit<MG4151>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/8-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>(For He had not yet<MG3764> fallen<MG1968> upon<MG1968> any<MG3762> of them; they had simply<MG3440> been<MG5225> baptized<MG907> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>in the name<MG3686> of the Lord<MG2962> Jesus<MG2424>.) <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/8-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>Then<MG5119> they <i>began</i> laying<MG2007> their hands<MG5495> on them, and they were receiving<MG2983> the Holy<MG40> Spirit<MG4151>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/8-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>Now<MG1161> when Simon<MG4613> saw<MG3708> that the Spirit<MG4151> was given<MG1325> through<MG1223> the laying<MG1936> on<MG1936> of the apostles’<MG652> hands<MG5495>, he offered<MG4374> them money<MG5536>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/8-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>saying<MG3004>, “Give<MG1325> this<MG3778> authority<MG1849> to me as<MG2532> well<MG2532>, so<MG2443> that<MG2443> everyone<MG1437> on<MG2007> whom<MG3739> I lay<MG2007> my hands<MG5495> may receive<MG2983> the Holy<MG40> Spirit<MG4151>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/8-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>But Peter<MG4074> said<MG3004> to him, “May your silver<MG694> perish<MG684> with you, because<MG3754> you thought<MG3543> you could acquire<MG2932> the gift<MG1431> of God<MG2316> with money<MG5536>! <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/8-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>You have no<MG3756> part<MG3310> or<MG3761> share<MG2819> in this<MG3778> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>matter<MG3056>, for your heart<MG2588> is not right<MG2117> before<MG1725> God<MG2316>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/8-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>Therefore<MG3767>, repent<MG3340> of this<MG3778> wickedness<MG2549> of yours<MG4771>, and pray<MG1189a> to the Lord<MG2962> <i>that,</i> if<MG1487> possible<MG686>, the intention<MG1963> of your heart<MG2588> will be forgiven<MG863> you. <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/8-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>For I see<MG3708> that you are <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>in the gall<MG5521> of bitterness<MG4088> and in the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>bondage<MG4886> of unrighteousness<MG93>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/8-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>But Simon<MG4613> answered<MG611> and said<MG3004>, “Pray<MG1189a> to the Lord<MG2962> for me yourselves<MG4771>, so<MG3704> that<MG3704> nothing<MG3367> of what<MG3739> you have said<MG3004> may come<MG1904> upon<MG1904> me.” <p class="hdg">An Ethiopian Receives Christ</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/8-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>So<MG3767>, when they had solemnly<MG1263> testified<MG1263> and spoken<MG2980> the word<MG3056> of the Lord<MG2962>, they started<MG5290> back<MG5290> to Jerusalem<MG2414>, and were preaching<MG2097> the gospel<MG2097> to many<MG4183> villages<MG2968> of the Samaritans<MG4541>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/8-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>But an angel<MG32a> of the Lord<MG2962> spoke<MG2980> to Philip<MG5376>, saying<MG3004>, “Get<MG450> ready<MG450> and go<MG4198> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>south<MG2596, 3314> to the road<MG3598> that descends<MG2597> from Jerusalem<MG2419> to Gaza<MG1048>.” (<span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>This<MG3778> is a desert<MG2048> <i>road.</i>) <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/8-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span>So<MG2532> he got<MG450> ready<MG450> and went<MG4198>; and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[l]</a></span>there was an Ethiopian<MG128> eunuch<MG2135>, a court<MG1413> official<MG1413> of <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[m]</a></span>Candace<MG2582>, queen<MG938> of the Ethiopians<MG128>, who<MG3739> was in<MG1909> charge<MG1909> of all<MG3956> her treasure<MG1047>; and he had come<MG2064> to Jerusalem<MG2419> to worship<MG4352>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/8-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span>and he was returning<MG5290> and sitting<MG2521> in his <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[n]</a></span>chariot<MG716>, and was reading<MG314> Isaiah<MG2268> the prophet<MG4396>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/8-29.htm"><b>29</b></a></span>Then<MG2532> the Spirit<MG4151> said<MG3004> to Philip<MG5376>, “Go<MG4334> up<MG4334> and join<MG2853> this<MG3778> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[o]</a></span>chariot<MG716>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/8-30.htm"><b>30</b></a></span>Philip<MG5376> ran<MG4370> up<MG4370> and heard<MG191> him reading<MG314> Isaiah<MG2268> the prophet<MG4396>, and said<MG3004>, “Do you understand<MG1097> what<MG3739> you are reading<MG314>?” <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/8-31.htm"><b>31</b></a></span>And he said<MG3004>, “Well<MG1063>, how<MG4459> could<MG1410> I, unless<MG1437, 3361> someone<MG5100> guides<MG3594> me?” And he invited<MG3870> Philip<MG5376> to come<MG305> up<MG305> and sit<MG2523> with him. <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/8-32.htm"><b>32</b></a></span>Now<MG1161> the passage<MG4042> of Scripture<MG1124> which<MG3739> he was reading<MG314> was this<MG3778>: <p class="indent1stline">“HE WAS LED<MG71> LIKE A SHEEP<MG4263b> TO SLAUGHTER<MG4967>; <t><p class="indent1">AND LIKE A LAMB<MG286> THAT IS SILENT<MG880> BEFORE<MG1726> ITS SHEARER<MG2751>, <t><p class="indent1">SO<MG3779> HE DOES NOT OPEN<MG455> HIS MOUTH<MG4750>. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/8-33.htm"><b>33</b></a></span>“IN HUMILIATION<MG5014> HIS JUSTICE<MG2920> WAS TAKEN<MG142> AWAY<MG142>; <t><p class="indent1">WHO<MG5101> WILL <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[p]</a></span>DESCRIBE<MG1334> HIS <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[q]</a></span>GENERATION<MG1074>? <t><p class="indent1">FOR HIS LIFE<MG2222> IS TAKEN<MG142> AWAY<MG142> FROM THE EARTH<MG1093>.” <A><span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/8-34.htm"><b>34</b></a></span>The eunuch<MG2135> answered<MG611> Philip<MG5376> and said<MG3004>, “Please<MG1189a> <i>tell me,</i> of whom<MG5101> does the prophet<MG4396> say<MG3004> this<MG3778>? Of himself<MG1438>, or<MG2228> of someone<MG5100> else<MG2087>?” <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/8-35.htm"><b>35</b></a></span>Then<MG2532> Philip<MG5376> opened<MG455> his mouth<MG4750>, and beginning<MG757> from this<MG3778> Scripture<MG1124> he preached<MG2097> Jesus<MG2424> to him. <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/8-36.htm"><b>36</b></a></span>As they went<MG4198> along<MG2596> the road<MG3598> they came<MG2064> to some<MG5100> water<MG5204>; and the eunuch<MG2135> *said<MG5346>, “Look<MG2400>! Water<MG5204>!
