David Pogue, tech writer for Yahoo, <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20151019112006/https://www.yahoo.com/tech/windows-10-reviewed-microsoft-returns-to-sanity-125261921924.html" target="_blank">wrote</a>:</p> <blockquote><p>“I’ll review the various improvements and new features, but if you’re in a hurry, the main thing is this: Windows 10 is <i>coherent. </i>It makes <i>sense. </i>Its design no longer leaves you pounding your forehead on your desk, ruing the day that Microsoft lit up whatever it was smoking.”</p></blockquote> <p>If you run Windows 7, 8, or 8.1, you may have already reserved your <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20151019112006/http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/upgradeyourworld/" target="_blank">free upgrade</a>. Microsoft expects over 1.5 billion people to be using Windows 10 in the near future.</p> <p>So the question that we’ve been asked by many users is:</p> <p style="text-align: left;"><strong>“Will <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20151019112006/http://www.rootsmagic.com/rootsmagic" target="_blank">RootsMagic</a>/<a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20151019112006/http://www.rootsmagic.com/personal-historian" target="_blank">Personal Historian</a>/<a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20151019112006/http://www.rootsmagic.com/family-atlas" target="_blank">Family Atlas</a> run on Windows 10?”</strong></p> <p>The short answer:</p> <p style="text-align: left;"><strong>“Yes”</strong>.</p> <p style="text-align: left;">Microsoft made early versions of Windows 10 available to developers and to the public to make sure the final release was as stable and as compatible as possible. We, and many RootsMagic users, have tested and confirmed that the software works as designed in the new operating system.</p> <p style="text-align: left;">So whether you’re an early-adopter and are already downloading Windows 10, or a cautious user taking a wait-and-see approach, we’ve got you covered.</p> <p style="text-align: left;"><strong><span style="color: #993300;">Important Update</span>:</strong> Apparently Microsoft snuck in a last-minute change that didn’t exist in earlier test versions. There is a Windows registry entry needed in Windows 10 to allow programs to display data using the internal browser component (again, it was working in Windows 10 preview builds). This prevents the internal WebSearch from working, certain text appearing on some screens, and backing up to Dropbox and Google Drive.</p> <p style="text-align: left;">Fortunately, the problem is easy to fix:</p> <p style="text-align: left;"><strong>If you are using RootsMagic 7 under Windows 10:</strong></p> <ol> <li style="text-align: left;">Select <strong>Help</strong> > <strong>Check for Updates</strong> from the Main Menu. You will see an <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20151019112006/http://www.rootsmagic.com/download/rootsmagic-7" target="_blank">update</a> is available (version 7.0.7 or higher).</li> <li style="text-align: left;">Follow the instructions to automatically download and install the update.</li> </ol> <p style="text-align: left;"><strong>If you are using RootsMagic 4, 5, or 6 under Windows 10:</strong></p> <p style="text-align: left;">1. Download the .REG file from <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20151019112006/http://files.rootsmagic.com/RootsMagic-Win10-Browser-Fix.reg" target="_blank">files.rootsmagic.com/RootsMagic-Win10-Browser-Fix.reg</a></p> <p style="text-align: left;">2. Run the .REG file to add the necessary entries to your Windows registry. It will display several scary warnings. Just keep telling it that “yes”, you do want to make the change.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div id="post_meta" class="prominent reduced"><div class="inner"> <h2>Information and Links</h2> <p>Join the fray by commenting, tracking what others have to say, or linking to it from your blog.</p> <dl class="metadata odd"> <dt class="">Information</dt> <dd class="icon date"><a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20151019112006/http://blog.rootsmagic.com/?m=201507">July 29th, 2015</a></dd> <dd class="icon comment"><a href="#comments">50 Responses</a></dd> </dl> <dl class="metadata even"> <dt>Feeds and Links</dt> <dd class="icon feed"><a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20151019112006/http://blog.rootsmagic.com/?feed=rss2&p=2477">Comment Feed</a></dd> <dd class="icon entry"><a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20151019112006/http://blog.rootsmagic.com/?author=2">From This Author</a></dd> <dd class="icon delicious"><a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20151019112006/http://del.icio.us/post?url=http://blog.rootsmagic.com/?p=2477&title=RootsMagic+Software+and+Windows+10">Del.icio.us</a></dd> <dd class="icon digg"><a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20151019112006/http://www.digg.com/submit" target="_new">Digg</a></dd> <dd class="icon technorati"><a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20151019112006/http://technorati.com/cosmos/search.html?url=http://blog.rootsmagic.com/?p=2477">Technorati</a></dd> </dl> <dl class="metadata odd"> <dt>Categories and Tags</dt> <dd class="icon category"><a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20151019112006/http://blog.rootsmagic.com/?cat=1" rel="category">Uncategorized</a></dd> </dl> <br class="clear"/> <dl class="other"> <dt>Other Posts</dt> <dd class="icon jump"></dd> <dd class="icon jump"><a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20151019112006/http://blog.rootsmagic.com/?p=2425" rel="prev">In Memory of Gordon Dixon Booth</a></dd> </dl> </div></div> <div id="widgets" class="widgets_single"> <div id="widgets_single_a" class="widget_set reduced"></div> <div id="widgets_single_b" class="widget_set reduced"></div> </div> <br class="clear"/> <div id="comment_area"> <div id="loop_comments"> <a name="comments"></a> <h2>Reader Comments</h2> <a name="comment-19983"></a> <div id="comment_19983" class="comment"> <dl class="metadata reduced"> <dt class="comment_number">Comment Number:</dt> <dd class="comment_number">1</dd> <dt class="writer">Written by:</dt> <dd class="writer">Penny Holt<br/></dd> <dt class="timedate">Posted on:</dt> <dd class="timedate">July 29, 2015 at 2:21 pm </dd> </dl> <div class="content"> <p>You heard my plea. As long as you have RootsMagic 7.0.6.0 you can sync with FamilySearch in RootsMagic. If you have RootsMagic 6 you will need to upgrade to RootsMagic 7 or at least download the free Essential version in order to use the FamilySearch tools. I signed to get it. July 29 I clicked go get it. Took the entire day to download it. When I went into it, it was horrible, with the things you had to do to get into your computer. Sign up for a new email address, make a pin number. I did all they said and it opened. No favorites, only box to make new favorite list. The list of program were not complete and some listings were folders within a program but not the folder. Example Roots Magic7 was listed with not media, but a couple of sub folders in the media. Everything was in terrible order. I kept clicking on things and it would pop up a box saying drivers need to be downloaded to make it work properly, no place to download anything. My email from Microsoft said they would be downloading in the background driver and tools needed for Windows 10, but it would not work, besides I didn’t like the layout. No matter what I clicked a box popped up will not work correctly. Finally a box cam up saying if you want to go back to your previous version click and I clicked immediately. When I clicked, my screen went black, nothing. I’m glad I left my computer on and in about 15 minutes my Windows 7 Home Premium came on. I tested a few folders and everything seemed to be working all right. I click on RM7 and it appeared correct then RM media and they were all there some 3,000 media items.
