His height<MH1363> was <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[a]</a></span>six<MH8337a> cubits<MH520> and a <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[b]</a></span>span<MH2239>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/17-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>And <i>he had</i> a bronze<MH5178> helmet<MH3553> on his head<MH7218>, and he wore<MH3847> scale-armor<MH7193> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>which weighed<MH4948> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>five<MH2568> thousand<MH505> shekels<MH8255> of bronze<MH5178>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/17-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span><i>He</i> also <i>had</i> bronze<MH5178> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>greaves<MH4697> on his legs<MH7272> and a bronze<MH5178> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>saber<MH3591> <i>slung</i> between<MH996> his shoulders<MH3802>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/17-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>The shaft<MH2671> of his spear<MH2595> was like a weaver&#8217;s<MH707> beam<MH4500>, and the head<MH3852> of his spear<MH2595> <i>weighed</i> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>six<MH8337a> hundred<MH3967> shekels<MH8255> of iron<MH1270>; and his shield-carrier<MH6793c, 5375> walked<MH1980> in front<MH6440> of him. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/17-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>He stood<MH5975> and shouted<MH7121> to the ranks<MH4634> of Israel<MH3478> and said<MH559> to them, &#8220;Why<MH4100> do you come<MH3318> out<MH3318> to draw<MH6186a> up<MH6186a> in battle<MH4421> formation<MH4421>? Am I not the Philistine<MH6430>, and you the servants<MH5650> of Saul<MH7586>? Choose<MH1262> a man<MH376> as<MH1262> your representative<MH1262> and have him come<MH3381> down<MH3381> to me. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/17-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>If<MH518> he is<MH3201> able<MH3201> to fight<MH3898a> me and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>kill<MH5221> me, then we will become<MH1961> your servants<MH5650>; but if<MH518> I prevail<MH3201> against him and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>kill<MH5221> him, then you shall become<MH1961> our servants<MH5650> and serve<MH5647> us.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/17-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>Then the Philistine<MH6430> said<MH559>, &#8220;I have defied<MH2778a> the ranks<MH4634> of Israel<MH3478> this<MH2088> day<MH3117>! Give<MH5414> me a man<MH376>, so that we may fight<MH3898a> together<MH3162>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/17-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>When Saul<MH7586> and all<MH3605> Israel<MH3478> heard<MH8085> these<MH428> words<MH1697> of the Philistine<MH6430>, they were dismayed<MH2865> and very<MH3966> fearful<MH3372a>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/17-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>Now David<MH1732> was the son<MH1121> of <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>the Ephrathite<MH673> of Bethlehem<MH1035> in Judah<MH3063>, <i>the man</i> whose name<MH8034> was Jesse<MH3448>, and he had eight<MH8083> sons<MH1121>. And <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>Jesse was<MH2204> old<MH2204> in the days<MH3117> of Saul<MH7586>, advanced<MH935> <i>in years</i> among men<MH376>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/17-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>The three<MH7969> older<MH1419> sons<MH1121> of Jesse<MH3448> had <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[l]</a></span>followed<MH1980, 310> Saul<MH7586> to the battle<MH4421>. And the names<MH8034> of his three<MH7969> sons<MH1121> who<MH834> had gone<MH1980> into the battle<MH4421> were Eliab<MH446> the firstborn<MH1060>, and second<MH4932> to him, Abinadab<MH41>, and the third<MH7992>, Shammah<MH8048>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/17-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>So David<MH1732> was the youngest<MH6996a>. Now the three<MH7969> oldest<MH1419> followed<MH1980, 310> Saul<MH7586>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/17-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>but David<MH1732> went<MH1980> back<MH7725> and forth<MH1980> from Saul<MH7586> to tend<MH7462a> his father&#8217;s<MH1> flock<MH6629> at Bethlehem<MH1035>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/17-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>And the Philistine<MH6430> came<MH5066> forward<MH5066> morning<MH7925> and evening<MH6150>, and took<MH3320> his stand<MH3320> for forty<MH705> days<MH3117>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/17-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>Then Jesse<MH3448> said<MH559> to his son<MH1121> David<MH1732>, &#8220;Take<MH3947> now<MH4994> for your brothers<MH251> an ephah<MH374> of this<MH2088> roasted<MH7039> grain<MH7039> and these<MH2088> ten<MH6235> loaves<MH3899>, and run<MH7323> to the camp<MH4264> to your brothers<MH251>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/17-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>Bring<MH935> also these<MH428> ten<MH6235> slices<MH2757> of cheese<MH2461> to the commander<MH8269> of <i>their</i> thousand<MH505>, and look<MH6485> into the well-being<MH7965> of your brothers<MH251> and bring<MH3947> back <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[m]</a></span>confirmation<MH6161> from them. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/17-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>For Saul<MH7586> and they and all<MH3605> the men<MH376> of Israel<MH3478> are in the Valley<MH6010> of Elah<MH424>, fighting<MH3898a> the Philistines<MH6430>.&#8221; <p class="hdg">David Accepts the Challenge</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/17-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>So David<MH1732> got<MH7925> up<MH7925> early<MH7925> in the morning<MH1242> and left<MH5203> the flock<MH6629> with a keeper<MH8104>, and took<MH5375> <i>the supplies</i> and went<MH1980> as Jesse<MH3448> had commanded<MH6680> him. And he came<MH935> to the entrenchment<MH4570> encircling<MH4570> the camp<MH4570> while the army<MH2428> was going<MH3318> out<MH3318> in battle<MH4634> formation<MH4634>, shouting<MH7321> the<MH7321> war<MH4421> cry<MH7321>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/17-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>Israel<MH3478> and the Philistines<MH6430> drew<MH6186a> up<MH6186a> in<MH6186a> battle<MH6186a> formation<MH6186a>, army<MH4634> against<MH7122> army<MH4634>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/17-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>Then David<MH1732> left<MH5203> the baggage<MH3627> in the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[n]</a></span>care<MH3027> of the baggage<MH3627> keeper<MH8104> and ran<MH7323> to the battle<MH4634> line<MH4634>. And he entered<MH935> and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[o]</a></span>greeted<MH7592, 7965> his brothers<MH251>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/17-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>As he was speaking<MH1696> with them, behold<MH2009>, the champion<MH376, 996>, the Philistine<MH6430> from Gath<MH1661> named<MH8034> Goliath<MH1555>, was coming<MH5927> up<MH5927> from the army<MH4634> of the Philistines<MH6430>, and he spoke<MH1696> these<MH428> same words<MH1697>; and David<MH1732> heard<MH8085> <i>him.</i> <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/17-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>When all<MH3605> the men<MH376> of Israel<MH3478> saw<MH7200> the man<MH376>, they fled<MH5127> from him and were<MH3372a> very<MH3966> fearful<MH3372a>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/17-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>And the men<MH376> of Israel<MH3478> said<MH559>, &#8220;Have you seen<MH7200> this<MH2088> man<MH376> who is coming<MH5927> up<MH5927>? Surely<MH3588> he is coming<MH5927> up<MH5927> to defy<MH2778a> Israel<MH3478>. And it will be that the king<MH4428> will make<MH6238> the man<MH376> who<MH834> kills<MH5221> him wealthy<MH6238> with great<MH1419> riches<MH6239>, and will give<MH5414> him his daughter<MH1323> and make<MH6213a> his father&#8217;s<MH1> house<MH1004> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[p]</a></span>free<MH2670> in Israel<MH3478>.&#8221; <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/17-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>Then David<MH1732> said<MH559> to the men<MH376> who were standing<MH5975> by him, &#8220;What<MH4100> will be done<MH6213a> for the man<MH376> who<MH834> kills<MH5221> this<MH1975> Philistine<MH6430> and rids<MH5493> Israel<MH3478> of the disgrace<MH2781>? For who<MH4310> is this<MH2088> uncircumcised<MH6189> Philistine<MH6430>, that he has <i>dared to</i> defy<MH2778a> the armies<MH4634> of the living<MH2416a> God<MH430>?&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/17-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span>The people<MH5971a> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[q]</a></span>answered<MH559> him in agreement with this<MH2088> statement<MH1697>, saying<MH559>, &#8220;This<MH3541> is<MH3541> what<MH3541> will be done<MH6213a> for the man<MH376> who<MH834> kills<MH5221> him.&#8221; <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/17-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span>Now Eliab<MH446> his oldest<MH1419> brother<MH251> heard<MH8085> <i>him</i> when he spoke<MH1696> to the men<MH376>; and Eliab&#8217;s<MH446> anger<MH639> burned<MH2734> against David<MH1732> and he said<MH559>, &#8220;Why<MH4100> is it that you have come<MH3381> down<MH3381>? And with whom<MH4310> have you left<MH5203> those<MH2007> few<MH4592> sheep<MH6629> in the wilderness<MH4057b>? I myself<MH589> know<MH3045> your insolence<MH2087> and the wickedness<MH7455> of your heart<MH3824>; for you have come<MH3381> down<MH3381> in<MH4616> order<MH4616> to<MH4616> see<MH7200> the battle<MH4421>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/17-29.htm"><b>29</b></a></span>But David<MH1732> said<MH559>, &#8220;What<MH4100> have I done<MH6213a> now<MH6258>? Was it not <i>just</i> a <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[r]</a></span>question<MH1697>?&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/17-30.htm"><b>30</b></a></span>Then he turned<MH5437> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[s]</a></span>away<MH5437, 681> from him to another<MH312> and said<MH559> the same<MH2088> thing<MH1697>; and the people<MH5971a> replied<MH7725> with the same words<MH1697> as <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[t]</a></span>before<MH7223>. <p class="hdg">David Kills Goliath</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/17-31.htm"><b>31</b></a></span>When the words<MH1697> that David<MH1732> spoke<MH1696> were heard<MH8085>, they informed<MH5046> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[u]</a></span>Saul<MH7586>, and he <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[v]</a></span>sent<MH3947> for him. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/17-32.htm"><b>32</b></a></span>And David<MH1732> said<MH559> to Saul<MH7586>, &#8220;May no<MH408> one&#8217;s<MH120> heart<MH3820> fail<MH5307> on<MH5921> account<MH5921> of<MH5921> him; your servant<MH5650> will go<MH1980> and fight<MH3898a> this<MH2088> Philistine<MH6430>!&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/17-33.htm"><b>33</b></a></span>But Saul<MH7586> said<MH559> to David<MH1732>, &#8220;You are<MH3201> not able<MH3201> to go<MH1980> against<MH413> this<MH2088> Philistine<MH6430> to fight<MH3898a> him; for you are <i>only</i> a youth<MH5271>, while he has been a warrior<MH4421> since<MH4480> his youth<MH5271>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/17-34.htm"><b>34</b></a></span>But David<MH1732> said<MH559> to Saul<MH7586>, &#8220;Your servant<MH5650> was tending<MH7462a> his father&#8217;s<MH1> sheep<MH6629>. When a lion<MH738> or a bear<MH1677> came<MH935> and took<MH5375> a sheep<MH7716> from the flock<MH5739>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/17-35.htm"><b>35</b></a></span>I went<MH3318> out<MH3318> after<MH310> it and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[w]</a></span>attacked<MH5221> it, and rescued<MH5337> <i>the sheep</i> from its mouth<MH6310>; and when it rose<MH6965> up<MH6965> against<MH5921> me, I grabbed<MH2388> <i>it</i> by its mane<MH2206> and struck<MH5221> it and killed<MH4191> it. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/17-36.htm"><b>36</b></a></span>Your servant<MH5650> has <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[x]</a></span>killed<MH5221> both<MH1571> the lion<MH738> and the bear<MH1677>; and this<MH2088> uncircumcised<MH6189> Philistine<MH6430> will be like one<MH259> of them, since<MH3588> he has defied<MH2778a> the armies<MH4634> of the living<MH2416a> God<MH430>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/17-37.htm"><b>37</b></a></span>And David<MH1732> said<MH559>, &#8220;The LORD<MH3068> who<MH834> saved<MH5337> me from the paw<MH3027> of the lion<MH738> and the paw<MH3027> of the bear<MH1677>, He will save<MH5337> me from the hand<MH3027> of this<MH2088> Philistine<MH6430>.&#8221; So Saul<MH7586> said<MH559> to David<MH1732>, &#8220;Go<MH1980>, and may the LORD<MH3068> be with you.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/17-38.htm"><b>38</b></a></span>Then Saul<MH7586> clothed<MH3847> David<MH1732> with his military<MH4055> attire<MH4055> and put<MH5414> a bronze<MH5178> helmet<MH6959> on his head<MH7218>, and outfitted<MH3847> him with armor<MH8302>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/17-39.htm"><b>39</b></a></span>And David<MH1732> strapped<MH2296> on<MH2296> his sword<MH2719> over<MH4480, 5921> his military<MH4055> attire<MH4055> and struggled<MH2974> at walking<MH1980>, for he had not trained<MH5254> <i>with the armor.</i> So David<MH1732> said<MH559> to Saul<MH7586>, &#8220;I cannot<MH3201, 3808> go<MH1980> with these<MH428>, because<MH3588> I have not trained<MH5254> <i>with them.</i>&#8221; And David<MH1732> took<MH5493> them <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[y]</a></span>off<MH4480, 5921>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/17-40.htm"><b>40</b></a></span>Then he took<MH3947> his staff<MH4731> in his hand<MH3027> and chose<MH977> for himself five<MH2568> smooth<MH2512> stones<MH68> from the brook<MH5158a>, and put<MH7760> them in the shepherd&#8217;s<MH7462a> bag<MH3627> which<MH834> he had, that is, in <i>his</i> shepherd&#8217;s<MH3219> pouch<MH3219>, and his sling<MH7050a> was in his hand<MH3027>; and he approached<MH5066> the Philistine<MH6430>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/17-41.htm"><b>41</b></a></span>Then the Philistine<MH6430> came<MH1980> and approached<MH7126> David<MH1732>, with the shield-bearer<MH6793c, 5375> in front<MH6440> of him. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/17-42.htm"><b>42</b></a></span>When the Philistine<MH6430> looked<MH5027> and saw<MH7200> David<MH1732>, he was<MH959> contemptuous<MH959> of him; for he was <i>only</i> a youth<MH5288>, and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[z]</a></span>reddish<MH132>, with a handsome<MH3303> appearance<MH4758>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/17-43.htm"><b>43</b></a></span>So the Philistine<MH6430> said<MH559> to David<MH1732>, &#8220;Am I a dog<MH3611>, that you come<MH935> to me with sticks<MH4731>?&#8221; And the Philistine<MH6430> cursed<MH7043> David<MH1732> by his gods<MH430>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/17-44.htm"><b>44</b></a></span>The Philistine<MH6430> also said<MH559> to David<MH1732>, &#8220;Come<MH1980> to me, and I will give<MH5414> your flesh<MH1320> to the birds<MH5775> of the sky<MH8064> and the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[aa]</a></span>wild<MH7704> animals<MH929>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/17-45.htm"><b>45</b></a></span>But David<MH1732> said<MH559> to the Philistine<MH6430>, &#8220;You come<MH935> to me with a sword<MH2719>, a spear<MH2595>, and a <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[ab]</a></span>saber<MH3591>, but I come<MH935> to you in the name<MH8034> of the LORD<MH3068> of armies<MH6635>, the God<MH430> of the armies<MH4634> of Israel<MH3478>, whom<MH834> you have defied<MH2778a>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/17-46.htm"><b>46</b></a></span>This<MH2088> day<MH3117> the LORD<MH3068> will hand<MH5462, 3027> you over<MH5462> to me, and I will strike<MH5221> you and remove<MH5493> your head<MH7218> from you.
