<t><p class="indent1">He humbles<MH8213>, He also<MH637> exalts<MH7311>. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/2-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>“He raises<MH6965> the poor<MH1800b> from the dust<MH6083>, <t><p class="indent1">He lifts<MH7311> the needy<MH34> from the garbage<MH830> heap<MH6083> <t><p class="indent1">To seat<MH3427> <i>them</i> with nobles<MH5081>, <t><p class="indent1">And He gives<MH5157> them a seat<MH3678> of honor<MH3519b> as<MH5157> an<MH5157> inheritance<MH5157>; <t><p class="indent1">Against<MH5921> them He will thunder<MH7481> in the heavens<MH8064>, <t><p class="indent1">The LORD<MH3068> will judge<MH1777> the ends<MH657> of the earth<MH776>; <t><p class="indent1">And He will give<MH5414> strength<MH5797> to His king<MH4428>, <t><p class="indent1">And will exalt<MH7311> the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>horn<MH7161> of His anointed<MH4899>.” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/2-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>Then Elkanah<MH511> went<MH1980> to his home<MH1004> at Ramah<MH7414>. But the boy<MH5288> continued<MH1961> to attend<MH8334> to<MH8334> the service<MH8334> of the LORD<MH3068> before<MH6440> Eli<MH5941> the priest<MH3548>. <p class="hdg">The Sin of Eli’s Sons</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/2-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>Now the sons<MH1121> of Eli<MH5941> were <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>useless<MH1100> men<MH1121>; they did not know<MH3045> the LORD<MH3068>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/2-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>And <i>this was</i> the custom<MH4941> of the priests<MH3548> with the people<MH5971a>: <i>when</i> anyone<MH3605, 376> was offering<MH2076> a sacrifice<MH2077>, the priest’s<MH3548> servant<MH5288> would come<MH935> while the meat<MH1320> was cooking<MH1310>, with a three-pronged<MH7969, 8127> fork<MH4207a> in his hand<MH3027>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/2-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>And he would thrust<MH5221> it into the pan<MH3595>, or<MH176> kettle<MH1731>, or<MH176> caldron<MH7037>, or<MH176> pot<MH6517>; everything<MH3605> that the fork<MH4207a> brought<MH5927> up<MH5927>, the priest<MH3548> would take<MH3947> for himself. They did<MH6213a> so<MH3602> in Shiloh<MH7887> to all<MH3605> the Israelites<MH3478> who came<MH935> there<MH8033>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/2-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>Also<MH1571>, before<MH2962> they <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>burned<MH6999> the fat<MH2459>, the priest’s<MH3548> servant<MH5288> would come<MH935> and say<MH559> to the man<MH376> who was sacrificing<MH2076>, “Give<MH5414> the priest<MH3548> meat<MH1320> for roasting<MH6740>, as he will not take<MH3947> cooked<MH1310> meat<MH1320> from you, only<MH3588, 518> raw<MH2416a>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/2-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>And <i>if</i> the man<MH376> said<MH559> to him, “They must<MH6999> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>burn<MH6999> the fat<MH2459> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>first<MH3117>, then take<MH3947> as much<MH3512c> as<MH3512c> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>you desire<MH183>,” then he would say<MH559>, “No<MH3808>, but you must give<MH5414> <i>it to me</i> now<MH6258>; and if<MH518> not, I am taking<MH3947> it by force<MH2394>!” <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/2-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>And <i>so</i> the sin<MH2403b> of the young<MH5288> men<MH5288> was very<MH3966> great<MH1419> before<MH6440> the LORD<MH3068>, for the men<MH376> treated<MH5006> the offering<MH4503> of the LORD<MH3068> disrespectfully<MH5006>. <p class="hdg">Samuel before the LORD as a Boy</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/2-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>Now Samuel<MH8050> was ministering<MH8334> before<MH6440> the LORD<MH3068>, <i>as</i> a boy<MH5288> wearing<MH2296> a linen<MH906> ephod<MH646>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/2-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>And his mother<MH517> would make<MH6213a> for him a little<MH6996b> robe<MH4598> and bring<MH5927> it up<MH5927> to him from year<MH3117> to year<MH3117> when she would come<MH5927> up<MH5927> with her husband<MH376> to offer<MH2076> the yearly<MH3117> sacrifice<MH2077>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/2-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>Then Eli<MH5941> would bless<MH1288> Elkanah<MH511> and his wife<MH802>, and say<MH559>, “May the LORD<MH3068> give<MH7760> you <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[l]</a></span>children<MH2233> from this<MH2088> woman<MH802> in<MH8478> place<MH8478> of<MH8478> the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[m]</a></span>one<MH7596> she requested<MH7592> of the LORD<MH3068>.” And they went<MH1980> to their own <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[n]</a></span>home<MH4725>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/2-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span><span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[o]</a></span>The LORD<MH3068> indeed<MH3588> visited<MH6485> Hannah<MH2584>, and she conceived<MH2029> and gave<MH3205> birth<MH3205> to three<MH7969> sons<MH1121> and two<MH8147> daughters<MH1323>. And the boy<MH5288> Samuel<MH8050> grew<MH1431> up<MH1431> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[p]</a></span>before<MH5973> the LORD<MH3068>. <p class="hdg">Eli Rebukes His Sons</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/2-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>Now Eli<MH5941> was<MH2204> very<MH3966> old<MH2204>; and he heard<MH8085> <i>about</i> everything<MH3605> that his sons<MH1121> were doing<MH6213a> to all<MH3605> Israel<MH3478>, and that they slept<MH7901> with the women<MH802> who served<MH6633> at the doorway<MH6607> of the tent<MH168> of meeting<MH4150>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/2-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>So he said<MH559> to them, “Why<MH4100> are you doing<MH6213a> such<MH428> things<MH1697> as these<MH428>, the evil<MH7451a> things<MH1697> that I hear<MH8085> from all<MH3605> these<MH428> people<MH5971a>? <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/2-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>No<MH408>, my sons<MH1121>; for the report<MH8052> is not good<MH2896a> which<MH834> I hear<MH8085> the LORD’S<MH3068> people<MH5971a> circulating<MH5674a>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/2-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>If<MH518> one person<MH376> sins<MH2398> against another<MH376>, God<MH430> will mediate<MH6419> for him; but if<MH518> a person<MH376> sins<MH2398> against the LORD<MH3068>, who<MH4310> can intercede<MH6419> for him?” But they would not listen<MH8085> to the voice<MH6963> of their father<MH1>, for the LORD<MH3068> desired<MH2654a> to put<MH4191> them to<MH4191> death<MH4191>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/2-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>Now the boy<MH5288> Samuel<MH8050> was continuing<MH1980> to grow<MH1432> and to be in favor<MH2896a> both<MH1571> with the LORD<MH3068> and with people<MH376>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/2-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span>Then a man<MH376> of God<MH430> came<MH935> to Eli<MH5941> and said<MH559> to him, “This<MH3541> is<MH3541> what<MH3541> the LORD<MH3068> says<MH559>: ‘Did I <i>not</i> indeed<MH1540> reveal<MH1540> Myself to the house<MH1004> of your father<MH1> when they were in Egypt<MH4714> <i>in bondage</i> to Pharaoh’s<MH6547> house<MH1004>? <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/2-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span>Did I <i>not</i> choose<MH977> them from all<MH3605> the tribes<MH7626> of Israel<MH3478> to be My priests<MH3548>, to go<MH5927> up<MH5927> to My altar<MH4196>, to burn<MH6999> incense<MH7004>, to carry<MH5375> an ephod<MH646> before<MH6440> Me? And did I <i>not</i> give<MH5414> to the house<MH1004> of your father<MH1> all<MH3605> the fire<MH801> <i>offerings</i> of the sons<MH1121> of Israel<MH3478>? <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/2-29.htm"><b>29</b></a></span>Why<MH4100> are you <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[q]</a></span>showing<MH1163> contempt<MH1163> for My sacrifice<MH2077> and My offering<MH4503> which<MH834> I have commanded<MH6680> <i>for My</i> dwelling<MH4583>, and <i>why</i> are you honoring<MH3513> your sons<MH1121> above<MH4480> Me, by making<MH1254b> yourselves fat<MH1254b> with the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[r]</a></span>choicest<MH7225> of every<MH3605> offering<MH4503> of My people<MH5971a> Israel<MH3478>?’ <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/2-30.htm"><b>30</b></a></span>Therefore<MH3651> the LORD<MH3068> God<MH430> of Israel<MH3478> declares<MH5002>, ‘I did indeed<MH559> say<MH559> that your house<MH1004> and the house<MH1004> of your father<MH1> was to walk<MH1980> before<MH6440> Me forever<MH5704, 5769>’; but now<MH6258> the LORD<MH3068> declares<MH5002>, ‘Far<MH2486> be it from Me—for those who honor<MH3513> Me I will honor<MH3513>, and those who despise<MH959> Me will be<MH7043> insignificant<MH7043>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/2-31.htm"><b>31</b></a></span>Behold<MH2009>, the days<MH3117> are coming<MH935> when I will eliminate<MH1438> your <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[s]</a></span>strength<MH2220> and the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[t]</a></span>strength<MH2220> of your father’s<MH1> house<MH1004>, so<MH4480> that<MH4480> there will not<MH4480> be an old<MH2205> man<MH2205> in your house<MH1004>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/2-32.htm"><b>32</b></a></span>And you will look<MH5027> at the distress<MH6862b> of <i>My</i> dwelling<MH4583>, in <i>spite of</i> all<MH3605> the good<MH3190> that <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[u]</a></span>I do<MH3190> for Israel<MH3478>; and there will never<MH3808, 3605, 3117> be an old<MH2205> man<MH2205> in your house<MH1004>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/2-33.htm"><b>33</b></a></span>Yet I will not cut<MH3772> off<MH3772> every<MH376> man<MH376> of yours from My altar<MH4196>, <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[v]</a></span>so that your eyes<MH5869> will fail<MH3615> <i>from weeping</i> and your soul<MH5315> grieve<MH109>, and all<MH3605> the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[w]</a></span>increase<MH4768> of your house<MH1004> will die<MH4191> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[x]</a></span>in the prime<MH376> of life<MH376>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/2-34.htm"><b>34</b></a></span>And this<MH2088> will be the sign<MH226> to you which<MH834> will come<MH935> in<MH413> regard<MH413> to<MH413> your two<MH8147> sons<MH1121>, Hophni<MH2652> and Phinehas<MH6372>: on the same<MH259> day<MH3117> both<MH8147> of them will die<MH4191>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/2-35.htm"><b>35</b></a></span>But I will raise<MH6965> up<MH6965> for Myself a faithful<MH539> priest<MH3548> who will do<MH6213a> according to what<MH834> is in My heart<MH3824> and My soul<MH5315>;
