members do?<br/></h4> <p> The ORCID Board is responsible for ensuring the organization is acting in the best interests of ORCID stakeholders. To this end, the Board provides strategic guidance for the successful achievement of <a href="http://web.archive.org/web/20161117020431/http://orcid.org/about/what-is-orcid/mission">ORCID’s mission</a>. The Board oversees the management of ORCID and its organizational performance, reviews high-level organizational goals and policies, makes high-level decisions, reviews Executive Director performance, and serves as a community advocate for ORCID. The Board is supported by the Executive Director and a <a href="http://web.archive.org/web/20161117020431/http://orcid.org/content/orcid-team">full-time professional staff</a>, who are responsible for day-to-day operations and recommending goals and policies. Board members must commit to attending in-person meetings 3 times per annum. </p> <h4> Who may serve?<br/></h4> <p> Any employee, officer, or director of an ORCID Member is eligible to be nominated for election to the ORCID Board of Directors. The term of service is 3 years. Note that at any one time, there may be only one Board Director representing any one ORCID Member or Member Consortium. </p> <p> ORCID also elects up to two researchers to the Board; this person’s organization need not be an ORCID member. </p> <h4> Is there an attempt to balance non-profit and corporate membership?<br/></h4> <p> As stated in our Bylaws, the Board is comprised of a majority of individuals representing Members that are non-profit institutions. Every attempt is made to balance the Board by skills (technical, financial, management) and sector (academia, funding, government, publishing, etc.). </p> <h4> Are Board members compensated?<br/></h4> <p> Board members are not compensated and are expected to pay their way to Board meetings. ORCID will pay for the unaffiliated researcher member to participate in Board meetings. Note that Board meetings usually alternate between North America and Europe, with occasional locations in Asia and Latin America. Starting in 2017, elections will be by majority vote by the ORCID Members on a slate presented by the Nominating Committee. In addition, write-in candidates may be nominated by any group of twenty (20) or more Members (including no more than one member of a specific Consortium) at least 30 days prior to the date the electronic ballot opens.
