Then Pharaoh<MH6547> awoke<MH3364>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/41-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>But he fell<MH3462> asleep<MH3462> and dreamed<MH2492b> a second<MH8145> time<MH8145>; and behold<MH2009>, seven<MH7651> ears<MH7641> of<MH7641> grain<MH7641> came<MH5927> up<MH5927> on a single<MH259> stalk<MH7070>, plump<MH1277> and good<MH2896a>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/41-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>Then behold<MH2009>, seven<MH7651> ears<MH7641>, thin<MH1851> and scorched<MH7710> by the east<MH6921> wind<MH6921>, sprouted<MH6779> up<MH6779> after<MH310> them. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/41-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>And the thin<MH1851> ears<MH7641> swallowed<MH1104> the seven<MH7651> plump<MH1277> and full<MH4392> ears<MH7641>. And Pharaoh<MH6547> told<MH5608> them his <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>dreams<MH2472>, but there<MH369> was<MH369> no<MH369> one<MH369> who could interpret<MH6622> them for Pharaoh<MH6547>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/41-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>Then the chief<MH8269> cupbearer<MH4945a> spoke<MH1696> to Pharaoh<MH6547>, saying<MH559>, “I would make mention<MH2142> today<MH3117> of my <i>own</i> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>offenses<MH2399>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/41-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>Pharaoh<MH6547> was<MH7107> furious<MH7107> with his servants<MH5650>, and he put<MH5414> me in confinement<MH4929> in the house<MH1004> of the captain<MH8269> of the bodyguard<MH2876>, <i>both</i> me and the chief<MH8269> baker<MH644>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/41-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>Then we had<MH2492b> a dream<MH2472> one<MH259> night<MH3915>, <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>he and I; each<MH376> of us dreamed<MH2492b> according to the interpretation<MH6623> of his <i>own</i> dream<MH2472>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/41-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>Now a Hebrew<MH5680> youth<MH5288> <i>was</i> there<MH8033> with us, a servant<MH5650> of the captain<MH8269> of the bodyguard<MH2876>, and we told<MH5608> him <i>the dreams,</i> and he interpreted<MH6622> our dreams<MH2472> for us. For each<MH376> man<MH376> he interpreted<MH6622> according to his <i>own</i> dream<MH2472>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/41-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>And just<MH3512c> as he interpreted<MH6622> for us, so<MH3651> it happened<MH1961>; <i>Pharaoh</i> restored<MH7725> me in my office<MH3653b>, but he hanged<MH8518> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>the chief baker.” <p class="hdg">Joseph Interprets</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/41-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>Then Pharaoh<MH6547> sent<MH7971> <i>word</i> and called<MH7121> for Joseph<MH3130>, and they hurriedly<MH7323> brought<MH7323> him out of the dungeon<MH953a>; and when he had shaved<MH1548> himself and changed<MH2498> his clothes<MH8071>, he came<MH935> to Pharaoh<MH6547>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/41-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>Pharaoh<MH6547> said<MH559> to Joseph<MH3130>, “I have had<MH2492b> a dream<MH2472>, but no<MH369> one<MH369> can interpret<MH6622> it; and I have heard<MH8085> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>it said<MH559> about<MH5921> you, that <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>when you hear<MH8085> a dream<MH2472> you can interpret<MH6622> it.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/41-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>Joseph<MH3130> then answered<MH6030a> Pharaoh<MH6547>, saying<MH559>, “<span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>It has nothing<MH1107> to<MH1107> do<MH1107> with<MH1107> me; God<MH430> will <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>give<MH6030a> Pharaoh<MH6547> an answer<MH6030a> for his own good<MH7965>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/41-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>So Pharaoh<MH6547> said<MH1696> to Joseph<MH3130>, “In my dream<MH2472>, there<MH2009> I was, standing<MH5975> on the bank<MH8193> of the Nile<MH2975>; <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/41-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>and behold<MH2009>, seven<MH7651> cows<MH6510>, <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[l]</a></span>fat<MH1277, 1320> and fine-looking<MH3303, 8389> came<MH5927> up<MH5927> out of the Nile<MH2975>, and they grazed<MH7462a> in the marsh<MH260> grass<MH260>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/41-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>Then behold<MH2009>, seven<MH7651> other<MH312> cows<MH6510> came<MH5927> up<MH5927> after<MH310> them, poor<MH1800b> and very<MH3966> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[m]</a></span>ugly<MH7451a, 8389> and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[n]</a></span>thin<MH7534a, 1320>, such<MH2007> as I had never<MH3808> seen<MH7200> for <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[o]</a></span>ugliness<MH7455> in all<MH3605> the land<MH776> of Egypt<MH4714>; <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/41-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>and the thin<MH7534a> and ugly<MH7451a> cows<MH6510> ate<MH398> the first<MH7223> seven<MH7651> fat<MH1277> cows<MH6510>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/41-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>Yet when they had <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[p]</a></span>devoured<MH935, 7130> them, it could not be <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[q]</a></span>detected<MH3045> that they had <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[r]</a></span>devoured<MH935, 7130> them, <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[s]</a></span>for they were just<MH3512c> as<MH3512c> ugly<MH7451a> as <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[t]</a></span>before<MH8462>. Then I awoke<MH3364>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/41-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>I saw<MH7200> also in my dream<MH2472>, and behold<MH2009>, seven<MH7651> ears<MH7641> of<MH7641> grain<MH7641>, full<MH4392> and good<MH2896a>, came<MH5927> up<MH5927> on a single<MH259> stalk<MH7070>; <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/41-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>and behold<MH2009>, seven<MH7651> ears<MH7641>, withered<MH6798>, thin<MH1851>, <i>and</i> scorched<MH7710> by the east<MH6921> wind<MH6921> sprouted<MH6779> up<MH6779> after<MH310> them; <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/41-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>and the thin<MH1851> ears<MH7641> swallowed<MH1104> the seven<MH7651> good<MH2896a> ears<MH7641>. Then I told<MH559> it to the soothsayer<MH2748> priests<MH2748>, but there<MH369> was<MH369> no<MH369> one<MH369> who could explain<MH5046> it to me.” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/41-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>And Joseph<MH3130> said<MH559> to Pharaoh<MH6547>, “Pharaoh’s<MH6547> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[u]</a></span>dreams<MH2472> are one<MH259> <i>and the same;</i> God<MH430> has told<MH5046> to Pharaoh<MH6547> what<MH853, 834> He is about to do<MH6213a>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/41-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>The seven<MH7651> good<MH2896a> cows<MH6510> are seven<MH7651> years<MH8141>; and the seven<MH7651> good<MH2896a> ears<MH7641> are seven<MH7651> years<MH8141>; the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[v]</a></span>dreams<MH2472> are one<MH259> <i>and the same.</i> <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/41-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span>The seven<MH7651> thin<MH7534a> and ugly<MH7451a> cows<MH6510> that came<MH5927> up<MH5927> after<MH310> them are seven<MH7651> years<MH8141>, and the seven<MH7651> thin<MH7534a> ears<MH7641> scorched<MH7710> by the east<MH6921> wind<MH6921> will be seven<MH7651> years<MH8141> of famine<MH7458>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/41-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span><span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[w]</a></span>It is as I have spoken<MH1696> to Pharaoh<MH6547>: God<MH430> has shown<MH7200> Pharaoh<MH6547> what<MH834> He is about to do<MH6213a>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/41-29.htm"><b>29</b></a></span>Behold<MH2009>, seven<MH7651> years<MH8141> of great<MH1419> abundance<MH7647> are coming<MH935> in all<MH3605> the land<MH776> of Egypt<MH4714>; <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/41-30.htm"><b>30</b></a></span>and after<MH310> them seven<MH7651> years<MH8141> of famine<MH7458> will <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[x]</a></span>come<MH6965>, and all<MH3605> the abundance<MH7647> will be forgotten<MH7911> in the land<MH776> of Egypt<MH4714>, and the famine<MH7458> will <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[y]</a></span>ravage<MH3615> the land<MH776>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/41-31.htm"><b>31</b></a></span>So the abundance<MH7647> will be<MH3045> unknown<MH3045, 3808> in the land<MH776> because<MH4480, 6440> of that subsequent<MH310> famine<MH7458>; for it <i>will be</i> very<MH3966> severe<MH3515>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/41-32.htm"><b>32</b></a></span>Now as for the repeating<MH8138> of the dream<MH2472> to Pharaoh<MH6547> twice<MH6471>, <i>it means</i> that the matter<MH1697> is confirmed<MH3559> by God<MH430>, and God<MH430> will quickly<MH4116> bring<MH6213a> it about<MH6213a>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/41-33.htm"><b>33</b></a></span>So now<MH6258> let Pharaoh<MH6547> look<MH7200> for a man<MH376> discerning<MH995> and wise<MH2450>, and appoint<MH7896> him over<MH5921> the land<MH776> of Egypt<MH4714>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/41-34.htm"><b>34</b></a></span>Let Pharaoh<MH6547> take<MH6213a> action<MH6213a> to appoint<MH6485> overseers<MH6496> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[z]</a></span>in<MH5921> charge<MH5921> of<MH5921> the land<MH776>, and let him take<MH2567> a<MH2567> fifth<MH2567> <i>of the produce</i> of the land<MH776> of Egypt<MH4714> <i>as a tax</i> in the seven<MH7651> years<MH8141> of abundance<MH7647>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/41-35.htm"><b>35</b></a></span>Then have them collect<MH6908> all<MH3605> the food<MH3978> of these<MH428> good<MH2896a> years<MH8141> that are coming<MH935>, and store<MH6651> up<MH6651> the grain<MH1250> for food<MH400> in the cities<MH5892b> under<MH8478> Pharaoh’s<MH6547> authority<MH3027>, and have them guard<MH8104> <i>it.</i> <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/41-36.htm"><b>36</b></a></span>Let the food<MH400> be <i>used</i> as a reserve<MH6487> for the land<MH776> for the seven<MH7651> years<MH8141> of famine<MH7458> which<MH834> will occur<MH1961> in the land<MH776> of Egypt<MH4714>, so that the land<MH776> will not perish<MH3772> during the famine<MH7458>.” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/41-37.htm"><b>37</b></a></span>Now the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[aa]</a></span>proposal<MH1697> seemed<MH3190> good<MH3190> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[ab]</a></span>to Pharaoh<MH6547> and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[ac]</a></span>to all<MH3605> his servants<MH5650>. <p class="hdg">Joseph Is Made a Ruler of Egypt</p><span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/41-38.htm"><b>38</b></a></span>Then Pharaoh<MH6547> said<MH559> to his servants<MH5650>, “Can we find<MH4672> a man<MH376> like this<MH2088>, in whom<MH834> there is a divine<MH430> spirit<MH7307>?” <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/41-39.htm"><b>39</b></a></span>So Pharaoh<MH6547> said<MH559> to Joseph<MH3130>, “Since<MH310> God<MH430> has informed<MH3045> you of all<MH3605> this<MH2088>, there<MH369> is<MH369> no<MH369> one<MH369> as discerning<MH995> and wise<MH2450> as you are. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/41-40.htm"><b>40</b></a></span>You shall be <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[ad]</a></span>in<MH5921> charge<MH5921> of<MH5921> my house<MH1004>, and all<MH3605> my people<MH5971a> shall <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[ae]</a></span>be<MH5401a> obedient<MH5401a, 5921, 6310> to you; only<MH7534b> <i>regarding</i> the throne<MH3678> will I be greater<MH1431> than<MH4480> you.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/41-41.htm"><b>41</b></a></span>Pharaoh<MH6547> also said<MH559> to Joseph<MH3130>, “See<MH7200>, I have placed<MH5414> you over<MH5921> all<MH3605> the land<MH776> of Egypt<MH4714>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/41-42.htm"><b>42</b></a></span>Then Pharaoh<MH6547> took<MH5493> off<MH5493> his signet<MH2885> ring<MH2885> from his hand<MH3027> and put<MH5414> it on Joseph’s<MH3130> hand<MH3027>, and clothed<MH3847> him in garments<MH899b> of fine<MH8336> linen<MH8336>, and put<MH7760> the gold<MH2091> necklace<MH7242> around<MH5921> his neck<MH6677>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/41-43.htm"><b>43</b></a></span>And he had him ride<MH7392> in <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[af]</a></span>his second<MH4932> chariot<MH4818>; and they proclaimed<MH7121> ahead<MH6440> of him, “<span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[ag]</a></span>Bow<MH86> the<MH86> knee<MH86>!” And he placed<MH5414> him over<MH5921> all<MH3605> the land<MH776> of Egypt<MH4714>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/41-44.htm"><b>44</b></a></span>Moreover, Pharaoh<MH6547> said<MH559> to Joseph<MH3130>, “<i>Though</i> I am Pharaoh<MH6547>, yet without<MH1107> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[ah]</a></span>your permission no<MH3808> one<MH376> shall raise<MH7311> his hand<MH3027> or foot<MH7272> in all<MH3605> the land<MH776> of Egypt<MH4714>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/41-45.htm"><b>45</b></a></span>Then Pharaoh<MH6547> named<MH7121, 8034> Joseph<MH3130> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[ai]</a></span>Zaphenath-paneah<MH6847>; and he gave<MH5414> him Asenath<MH621>, the daughter<MH1323> of Potiphera<MH6319> priest<MH3548> of <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[aj]</a></span>On<MH204>, to <i>be his</i> wife<MH802>. And Joseph<MH3130> went<MH3318> out<MH3318> over<MH5921> the land<MH776> of Egypt<MH4714>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/41-46.htm"><b>46</b></a></span>Now Joseph<MH3130> was thirty<MH7970> years<MH8141> old<MH1121> when he <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[ak]</a></span>stood<MH5975> in the presence<MH6440> of Pharaoh<MH6547>, king<MH4428> of Egypt<MH4714>.
