The Double Quarter Wave (DQW) crab cavity will be utilised to compensate for the effects of the vertical crossing angle. Two bare DQW series cavities were manufactured in Germany by RI Research Instruments and validated successfully at CERN through a cold test at 2K. Two DQW series cavities were produced in-house at CERN, integrated into a titanium helium tank, and equipped with RF ancillaries. This paper addresses the cavities preparation processes and summarizes the results of cryogenic tests of DQW cavities at CERN

<dc:title xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/" xml:lang="fr"/> <dc:hasPart xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/">['']</dc:hasPart> <dc:hasVersion xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/"/>

Beam Performance with the LHC Injectors Upgrade

The LHC Injectors Upgrade (LIU) project was put in place between 2010 and 2021 to increase the intensity and brightness in the LHC injectors to match the challenging requirements of the High-Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) project, while ensuring reliable operation of the injectors complex up to the end of the HL-LHC era (ca. 2040). During the 2019-2020 CERN accelerators shutdown, extensive hardware modifications were implemented in the entire LHC proton and ion injection chains, involving the new Linac4, the Proton Synchrotron Booster (PSB), the Proton Synchrotron (PS), the Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) and the ion PS injectors, i.e. the Linac3 and the Low Energy Ion Ring (LEIR). Since 2021, beams have been recommissioned throughout the injectors’ chain and the beam parameters are being gradually ramped up to meet the LIU specifications using new beam dynamics solutions adapted to the upgraded accelerators. This paper focuses on the proton beams and describes the current state of the art.

<dc:creator Amongst its related ancillaries, radiofrequency HOM (High Order Modes) couplers and field antennas are essential for reaching nominal performance during operation with high energy beams, as they monitor and control the electromagnetic fields in the cavities. Several concepts of such equipment have been engineered and manufactured, for both design validation and RF performance assessment. The following paper highlights manufacturing process definition, its challenges and the assembly strategies focusing on the ongoing RFD prototypes for the SPS beam tests. The resulting risk of particle contamination was difficult to assess, and could not be excluded with certainty. If one or more cavities were contaminated, a severe impact on beam operations in the LHC machine was to be expected. In order to minimize the risks, the Asia cryomodule has been replaced with a spare unit. Subsequently, the cryomodule was tested in the SM18 test facility without intermediate venting, and showed high levels of radiation due to field emission above 1.8 MV in one of the cavities. The other cavities were less strongly affected, but clear signs of contamination were observed. The helium processing technique was used to improve the performance of the SRF cavity with respect to field emission. This paper will discuss the results of the above-mentioned test.

<dc:title xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/" xml:lang="fr"/> <dc:hasPart xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/">['']</dc:hasPart> <dc:hasVersion xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/"/>

RF Dipole Crab Cavity Testing for HL-LHC

RF Crab Cavities are an essential element of the High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) upgrade at CERN. Both cavity designs use multiple Higher Order Mode (HOM) couplers to reduce beam instabilities and heat loads caused by the very high proton current in the HL-LHC. The conceptual RF designs of the HOM couplers are firstly presented, evaluating HOM damping requirements, fundamental mode rejection and dynamic heat load constraints. A special focus is given to the coupler’s characteristic impedance (Z0), to improve the robustness during transport and operation. Following this, RF measurements of the HOM couplers before installation, installed on the superconducting cavities and with a circulating proton beam are detailed, analysing deviations from the simulated cases.

<dc:title xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/" xml:lang="fr"/> <dc:hasPart xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/">['']</dc:hasPart> <dc:hasVersion xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/"/>

Achievements and Performance Prospects of the Upgraded LHC Injectors

To provide HL-LHC performance, the CERN LHC injector chain underwent a major upgrade during an almost 2-year-long shutdown. In the first half of 2021 the injectors were gradually re-started with the aim to reach at least pre-shutdown parameters for LHC as well as for fixed target beams. The strategy of the commissioning across the complex, a summary of the many challenges and finally the achievements will be presented. Several lessons were learned and have been integrated to define the strategy for the performance ramp-up over the coming years. Remaining limitations and prospects for LHC beam parameters at the exit of the LHC injector chain in the years to come will be discussed. Finally, the emerging need for improved operability of the CERN complex will be addressed, with a description of the first efforts to meet the availability and flexibility requirements of the HL-LHC era while at the same time maximizing fixed target physics output.

<dc:creator our LHC Injector Upgrade program, CERN decided to build two new amplifiers of 2 MW cw operating at 200 MHz. These amplifiers are based on Solid State technology, and use Cavity Combiner systems to reach the required power levels. Availability being the key word with respect to beam operation, the amplifier architecture choices will be explained. After a review of the challenges we had to face during the design phase of this new amplifiers, the difficulties of such a large production, as well as the commissioning and the performances obtained during the first years will be presented. With respect to global efficiency, hints to improve the wall-plug efficiency with a large RF amplifier will also be proposed.

CERN. New cavities have been installed for which the solid-state technology was chosen to deliver a combined RF power of 2 MW from 2560 RF amplifiers. This strategy promises high availability as the system continues operation when some of the amplifiers fail. This study quantifies the operational availability that can be achieved with this new installation. The evaluation is based on a Monte Carlo simulation of the system using the novel AvailSim4 simulation software. A model based on lifetime estimations of the RF modules is compared against data from early operational experience. Sensitivity analyses have been made, that give insight to the chosen operational scenario. With the increasing use of solid-state RF power amplifiers, the findings of this study provide a useful reference for future application of this technology in particle accelerators.

<dc:title xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/" xml:lang="fr"/> <dc:hasPart xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/">['']</dc:hasPart> <dc:hasVersion xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/"/>

RF system challenges for future ${e}^+ {e}^-$ circular colliders

The RF system is the centrepiece of any future circular lepton collider. In particular, the system is required to support the high intensity beams needed for pushing the luminosity at the lower energy regimes of future energy-frontier circular lepton colliders (e.g. for operation in the Z peak and at the WW threshold). Capturing, storing the beam and replacing energy losses from synchrotron radiation demand low frequency, low shunt resistance cavities, low number of cells and high RF power per cell. Controlling the beam both transversely and longitudinally requires sophisticated beam control and timing systems. Additional RF systems are used to ensure transverse stability (feedback systems) and to increase the luminosity (crab cavities). Operation at high energies (such as the ZH and ${\mathrm{t}{\overline{\mathrm{t}}}}$ threshold) requires a very large accelerating voltage, since synchrotron radiation leads to significantly higher energy losses per turn which must be compensated. Since the RF system is to be optimised in size and energy efficiency for varying demands for the different operational modes, the spectrum of R&D; challenges covers a wide range of technologies.

<dc:title xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/" xml:lang="fr"/> <dc:hasPart xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/">['']</dc:hasPart> <dc:hasVersion xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/"/>

Chapter 4: RF systems

The HL-LHC beams are injected, accelerated, and stored to their nominal energy of 7 TeV by the existing 400 MHz superconducting RF system of the LHC. A novel superconducting RF system consisting of eight cavities per beam for transverse deflection (aka crab cavities) of the bunches will be used to compensate the geometric loss in luminosity due to the non-zero crossing angle and the extreme focusing of the bunches in the HL-LHC. Due to doubling of the beam currents in the HL-LHC era, an optimal detuning scheme (aka full- detuning) is required to cope with the transient beam loading effects. A modulation of the klystron and cavity phase make the phase of bunches with respect to the RF clock to progressively slip along the bunch train, but then recover during the abort gap. With this scheme the klystron power is independent of the beam current and maintained constant over one full turn at the expense of bunch-to-bunch phase modulation. This scheme was experimentally tested in 2016 and operational since then in the LHC during the acceleration ramp and flat-top. During injection of the HL-LHC beams from the SPS in to the LHC, the original half-detuning scheme to strictly preserve the bunch-to-bunch spacing is a pre-requisite. The total available voltage with HL-LHC beams is therefore limited to approximately 6 MV with the available RF power at injection. Second harmonic RF system at 800 MHz for Landau damping and lower frequency accelerating RF system at 200 MHz in conjunction with the exiting 400 MHz cavities for improved capture from the SPS for intense and longer bunches were studied but are no longer considered for the HL-LHC.

<dc:title xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/" xml:lang="fr"/> <dc:hasPart xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/">['']</dc:hasPart> <dc:hasVersion xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/"/>

An Insight on the Thermal and Mechanical Numerical Evaluations for the High-Luminosity LHC Crab Cavities

One of the key devices of the HL-LHC project are SRF crab cavities. A cryomodule with two Double Quarter Wave (DQW) crab cavities has been successfully fabricat-ed and tested with beam at CERN whereas the Radio Frequency Dipole (RFD) crab cavities are currently on its fabrication process. The paper provides an insight on the multiple calculations carried out to evaluate the thermal and mechanical performance of the DQW and RFD cavi-ties and its components. In some cases, the presence of RF fields inside the cavity volume requires the use of mul-tiphysics numerical models capable of coupling these fields with the thermal and mechanical domains. In fact, the RF field presents a strong dependency on the cavity shape, whereas the mechanical, thermal and electrical properties of the materials may substantially vary as a function of temperature, which in turn depends on the RF field. The results presented in this paper, using both cou-pled and uncoupled models, allowed elucidating the importance of physics coupling on the numerical evalua-tion of RF cavities and its components. Analyses were also of great support for the design evaluation and im-provement of future prototypes.

<dc:title xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/" xml:lang="fr"/> <dc:hasPart xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/">['']</dc:hasPart> <dc:hasVersion xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/"/>

Operation Experience with the LHC ACS RF System

The LHC accelerating RF system consists of two cryomodules per beam, each containing four single-cell niobium sputtered 400.8 MHz superconducting cavities working at 4.5 K and an average accelerating voltage of 2 MV. There are two types of cavities Double Quarter Wave (DQW) for vertical crabbing, and Radiofrequency Dipole (RFD) for horizontal crabbing. Cavities are hosted in a cryomodule to provide optimal conditions for their operation at 2K while minimizing the external thermal loads and stray magnetic fields. One crab cryomodule contains more than thirteen thousand components and the assembly procedure for the first DQW prototype was carefully planned and executed. It was installed in the SPS accelerator at CERN in 2018 and successfully tested with proton beams. A review has thus been performed right after completion of the assembly in order to gather all the experience acquired and improve accordingly the design of the next generation of crab cryomodules. A second cryomodule with two RFD cavities is currently under production. This paper presents the lessons learnt from the first assembly and their implementation to the design of the future crab cryomodules.

<dc:title xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/" xml:lang="fr"/> <dc:hasPart xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/">['']</dc:hasPart> <dc:hasVersion xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/"/>

An SRF Test Stand in High Intensity and High Energy Proton Beams

In the framework of HL-LHC, a new infrastructure was installed in 2018, to test SRF structures in the proton beams of the SPS. Scope of the test stand is to study the operational performance of crab cavities for HL-LHC – more generally, SRF cavities – through a wide range of proton beam parameters up to high energy and current, under safe conditions for equipment and personnel. The SPS beam instrumentation is used to monitor orbit centering, RF phase scans, bunch rotation. To minimize impact on beam time, infrastructure and services allow for full remote control. Critical aperture restrictions is overcome by placing the test structure and its ancillaries on a motorized table for lateral translation in- and out of beam. Two articulated Y-shaped vacuum chambers connect the test cryomodule on a beam by-pass. A new cryogenic refrigerator is installed in a split scheme, with an underground cold box fed from a surface compressor. The two Inductive Output Tubes (IOT) power amplifiers deliver up to 60 kW cw via coaxial transmission lines to the two cavities and charges and circulators, the latter installed on the translation table. Interlocks and safety equipment complete the test stand.

<dc:title xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/" xml:lang="fr"/> <dc:hasPart xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/">['']</dc:hasPart> <dc:hasVersion xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/"/>

rf design studies on the 750 MHz radio frequency quadrupole linac for proton-induced x-ray emission analysis

The proton-induced x-ray emission (PIXE) is the most commonly used ion beam analysis technique. It allows for nondestructive quantitative elemental characterization and is used in a variety of fields, particularly for the diagnosis of cultural heritage artwork. To provide mobile access to PIXE, a compact transportable radio frequency quadrupole (RFQ) linac has been designed and is being built at CERN. The PIXE RFQ has a length of only one meter and accelerates a proton beam to an energy of 2 MeV. This paper covers various rf design studies for the RFQ operating at 750 MHz. We show simulation results regarding cavity, equipment, and coupler geometry. Thermomechanical and beam dynamics studies are presented as well. The paper concludes with a conceptual study on dipole mode detuning by means of length adjustment.

<dc:title xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/" xml:lang="fr"/> <dc:hasPart xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/">['']</dc:hasPart> <dc:hasVersion xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/"/>

High Power Test for Plug-compatible STF-type Power Coupler for ILC

From the view point of plug-compatibility for the power coupler in the ILC, recommended by Linear Collider Collaboration in 2013, new STF-type power couplers with 40mm of input port diameter were re-designed, fabricated and successfully high-power-tested. These cavities are based on the Nb/Cu technology. In time, two more cryomodules have been assembled, installed and commissioned on line, bringing the energy reach for the heaviest ions (A/q=4.5) up to 7.5 MeV/u. In 2017, while the first three cryomodules were prepared for the physics run, six more cavities were produced of which five will be installed in a fourth cryomodule. With this, the high beta section of the linac will be complete and the energy will reach 10 MeV/u for A/q=4.5. In this paper we review the experience and lessons learned during the construction of HIE-ISOLDE, along with some still open questions.

<dc:title xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/" xml:lang="fr"/> <dc:hasPart xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/">['']</dc:hasPart> <dc:hasVersion xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/"/>

Availability of the TiN Coating-Free Ceramic in the STF-type Power Coupler for ILC

In the Superconducting RF Test Facility (STF) in KEK, the research and development for the power coupler with the TiN coating-free ceramic has been done from 2014. In 2016, the high power test at the test bench was stopped due to the worse vacuum level by the unusual heating around the RF window with the TiN coating-free ceramic and the coaxial tapered section, which was caused by the enormous emission of the secondary electrons from the ceramic. And, the situation was never also changed by the ultrapure water rinsing for the power couplers several times. However, in 2017, the ultrasonic rinsing was done for the power couplers for the first time by the collaboration between KEK and TETD. After that, the situation was drastically improved, and the secondary electron emission almost disappeared even in the higher RF duty. This shows that the TiN coating-free ceramic is the prospective item for the cost reduction in ILC. In this report, the recent result for the power coupler with the TiN coating-free ceramic will be presented in detailed.

<dc:title xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/" xml:lang="fr"/> <dc:hasPart xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/">['']</dc:hasPart> <dc:hasVersion xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/"/>

RF Design of a High-frequency RFQ Linac for PIXE Analysis

Protons with an energy of few MeV are commonly used for Ion Beam Analysis of materials, in particular with the Proton Induced X-ray Emission technique (PIXE). Because of its non-damaging character, PIXE is used in a variety of fields, in particular for the diagnosis of cultural heritage artwork. A compact accelerator based on a high frequency RFQ (Radio Frequency Quadrupole) linac has been designed and is being built at CERN. The length of the RFQ is only one meter and it allows the acceleration of a proton beam up to an energy of 2 MeV. The complete system is conceived to be transportable, allowing PIXE analysis almost anywhere. This paper covers the RF design of the compact RFQ operating at 750 MHz. We present general accelerator parameters and the current state of the RF design, which includes RFQ geometry and coupler design, thermal simulation and first particle tracking results.

<dc:title xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/" xml:lang="fr"/> <dc:hasPart xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/">['']</dc:hasPart> <dc:hasVersion xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/"/>

Testing of the ESS MB-IOT Prototypes

ESS is considering the use of MB-IOTs for parts of the high-beta linac. Two prototypes have been built by indus-try, namely L3 and CPI/Thales and have passed the factory acceptance test with excellent results. Both tubes will go through further extensive testing at CERN for ESS follow-ing delivery and a final decision on tube technology will be taken in April 2018. This invited talk presents the back-ground for the technical decision of IOTs vs klystrons, associated impact for ESS, and latest plans for industrial production of these IOTs for ESS.

<dc:title xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/" xml:lang="fr"/> <dc:hasPart xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/">['']</dc:hasPart> <dc:hasVersion xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/"/>
