While earlier studies have investigated writing coherence for L1 children and university ESL students, our case study is the first that adapts Lee\u0026amp;#39;s (2002a) pedagogical framework to teach writing coherence to lower secondary school students in expository essay writing. The case study was conducted in a secondary school in Singapore. It involved seven students, aged 15 in Secondary Three (Grade 9). All of them were Chinese except for one Filipino. The study examines the impact of an intervention programme on students\u0026amp;#39; writing coherence in expository essays. The findings suggest that the lower secondary school writers were able to write locally and globally more coherent expository essays after the intervention programme. Specifically, the essays became more coherent with significant differences reported in the number of sentences written per topic and proportion of extended sequential progressions. Our study has advanced knowledge of how writing coherence can be taught to EFL students in the context of an exposition genre. It extends previous research by providing further evidence that coherence is not necessarily an elusive concept, but EFL teachers can use a set of tangible coherence-creating mechanisms to teach it in classrooms and students can learn to apply it in their essays. We conclude by suggesting pedagogical implications of this study, and possible future directions in research on coherence in Due to the fact that very limited studies have focussed on investigating this phenomenon in-depth, especially in the Jordanian context, the present study aims to explore issues and challenges faced by Jordanian students in using coherence in academic essays under the perspectives of writing course instructors. Methodology: This study used a qualitative approach to gather data. The sample comprises eight male instructors from two Jordanian universities. They were selected using a purposive sampling method. It is characterized mainly by cohesion and coherence; the former is created by some cohesive devices while the latter is established using certain strategies rarely incorporated into and investigated in language skills development. Therefore, this study is concerned with investigating the effect of discourse coherence strategies incorporated into writing instruction on developing writing skill. To this end, 50 Iranian female EFL learners assigned in 5 groups (4 experimental, 1 control) were exposed to four coherence-based strategies, including: 1) Given/New Strategy (GNS), 2) Direct Matching Strategy (DMS), 3) Bridging Strategy (BRS), 4) Reinstating Old Information Strategy (ROIS), 5) Control group conventional instructions of writing skills, respectively. Results of the One-Way ANOVA statistical analysis revealed that using discourse coherence-based strategies in the classroom, compared to mainstream instruction, can more significantly enhance writing ability of EFL learners. In parallel, the Give and New strategy-based instruction proved to be the most effective in developing the target skill. However, cross-strategically, no significant difference was seen among the investigated discourse coherence-based strategies. The findings offer pedagogical implications for L2 practitioners, teachers, materials developers, and autonomy seeking learners. One important aspect of language acquisition is good writing skills. However, students learning English as a foreign language often need help developing cohesion and coherence in writing. This study aims to examine whether a simple view of writing can improve EFL students&amp;#39; cohesion and coherence. This study utilized a quantitative method. Data were collected using two instruments: cohesion and coherence tests and student response questionnaires. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistical analysis and regression tests. The results showed that a simple view of writing can improve EFL students&amp;#39; cohesion and coherence. Students who used a simple view of writing learning had higher cohesion and coherence scores than students who did not use a simple view of writing learning.
