May 23 1975 after a 15-day trial, five men were convicted at the High Court in Glasgow, of plotting to help seize Scottish independence through the Army of the Provisional Government (APG). The press soon give these individuals the title "The Tartan Army" long before hordes of football fans invaded a football pitch in London. William Anderson was adjudged to be the major figure in the group which also included William Murray, Major Frederick Boothby, William Bell and Tony Tunilla who in total received jail sentences totalling 34 years. All but Bell were convicted of conspiring with intent to cause violence and injury to property. Two others, John Carlyle and Alastair Smith were aquitted although Smith had been cleared with any connection with the APG, was fined 拢75 for retaining Army manuals this was for contravening the Officials Secrets Act. The APG were also found guilty of a 拢8000 bank robbery in Springburn, Glasgow. 聽Over a period of four years several explosions occured in Scotland these were the Falkirk Radio Mast (Jan 1973), Dumfries Radio Mast (Dec 1972), Rockcliffe Power Pylon (Feb 1975), Bridge of Earn Oil Pipeline (Sept 1973), Kinfauns Oil Pipeline (Sept 1975), Crook of Devon Oil Pipeline (Sept 1975), Grangemouth Oil Pipeline (Jul 1974),聽 Cornhill Power Pylon (Feb 1975) these attacks happened after the Edinburgh Castle bomb聽blast聽in August 1971. As of this date no one has claimed responsibility for the bomb attack at Edinburgh Castle and later on in the year 1975 two men named Donald Currie and Gerard McGuigan were also jailed for alleged involvement in The Tartan Army. Currie was jailed for five years and McGuigan for one year. 聽It has to be noted that this didn't stop these bomb attacks, as on Sunday 21 September 1975 just after 10 O'clock in the evening a fertiliser bomb went off in the Clyde Tunnel in Glasgow. This just happened to coincide with a meeting that had just finished in the McLellan Galleries, Glasgow which was organised by the Scottish Republican Socialist Club (SRSC). The following statement was made to the Scottish Daily News via telephone "You can take it that the symbolism was not accidental. The bomb was timed to coincide with the break-up of the meeting" the caller further added "You could say that it was an indication that it's time people stopped talking and started acting." Scotland's history is our history. If you search the web you will notice there is very little written about the The Army of the Provisional Government (APG) or The Tartan Army.
