And David’s<MH1732> servants<MH5650> came<MH935> into the land<MH776> of the sons<MH1121> of Ammon<MH5983> to Hanun<MH2586> to console<MH5162> him. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_chronicles/19-3.htm"><b>3</b></a></span>But the commanders<MH8269> among the sons<MH1121> of Ammon<MH5983> said<MH559> to Hanun<MH2586>, “<span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[a]</a></span>Do you think<MH5869> that David<MH1732> is honoring<MH3513> your father<MH1>, in that he has sent<MH7971> comforters<MH5162> to you? Have his servants<MH5650> not come<MH935> to you to search<MH2713>, to demolish<MH2015>, and to spy<MH7270> out<MH7270> the land<MH776>?” <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_chronicles/19-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>So Hanun<MH2586> took<MH3947> David’s<MH1732> servants<MH5650> and shaved<MH1548> them, and cut<MH3772> off<MH3772> their robes<MH4063> in the middle<MH2677> as far<MH5704> as their buttocks<MH4667>, and sent<MH7971> them away<MH7971>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_chronicles/19-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>Then <i>certain people</i> went<MH1980> and told<MH5046> David<MH1732> about<MH5921> the men<MH376>. And he sent<MH7971> <i>messengers</i> to meet<MH7122> them, because<MH3588> the men<MH376> were very<MH3966> humiliated<MH3637>. And the king<MH4428> said<MH559>, “Stay<MH3427> at Jericho<MH3405> until<MH5704, 834> your beards<MH2206> grow<MH6779> <i>back,</i> then return<MH7725>.” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_chronicles/19-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>When the sons<MH1121> of Ammon<MH5983> saw<MH7200> that they had made<MH887> themselves repulsive<MH887> to David<MH1732>, Hanun<MH2586> and the sons<MH1121> of Ammon<MH5983> sent<MH7971> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[b]</a></span>a thousand<MH505> talents<MH3603> of silver<MH3701> to hire<MH7936> for themselves chariots<MH7393> and horsemen<MH6571b> from Mesopotamia<MH763>, Aram-maacah<MH758, 4601>, and Zobah<MH6678>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_chronicles/19-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>So they hired<MH7936> for themselves thirty-two<MH8147, 7970> thousand<MH505> chariots<MH7393>, and the king<MH4428> of Maacah<MH4601> and his people<MH5971a>, who came<MH935> and camped<MH2583> opposite<MH6440> Medeba<MH4311>. And the sons<MH1121> of Ammon<MH5983> gathered<MH622> together from their cities<MH5892b> and came<MH935> to the battle<MH4421>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_chronicles/19-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>When David<MH1732> heard<MH8085> <i>about it,</i> he sent<MH7971> Joab<MH3097> and all<MH3605> the army<MH6635>, the mighty<MH1368> men<MH1368>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_chronicles/19-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>The sons<MH1121> of Ammon<MH5983> came<MH3318> out<MH3318> and drew<MH6186a> up<MH6186a> in battle<MH4421> formation<MH4421> at the entrance<MH6607> of the city<MH5892b>; and the kings<MH4428> who<MH834> had come<MH935> were by<MH905> themselves<MH905> in the field<MH7704>. <p class="hdg">Ammon and Aram Defeated</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_chronicles/19-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>Now when Joab<MH3097> saw<MH7200> that the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>battle<MH4421> was set against<MH413> him at the front<MH6440> and at the rear<MH268>, he selected<MH977> <i>warriors</i> from all<MH3605> the choice<MH970> men<MH970> in Israel<MH3478> and lined<MH6186a> <i>them</i> up<MH6186a> against<MH7122> the Arameans<MH758>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_chronicles/19-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>But the remainder<MH3499a> of the people<MH5971a> he placed<MH5414> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>under the command<MH3027> of <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>Abshai<MH52> his brother<MH251>; and they lined<MH6186a> up<MH6186a> against<MH7122> the sons<MH1121> of Ammon<MH5983>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_chronicles/19-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>He said<MH559>, “If<MH518> the Arameans<MH758> are too<MH4480> strong<MH2388> for me, then you shall help<MH1961, 8668> me; but if<MH518> the sons<MH1121> of Ammon<MH5983> are too<MH4480> strong<MH2388> for you, then I will help<MH3467> you. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_chronicles/19-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>Be strong<MH2388>, and let’s show<MH2388> ourselves courageous<MH2388> for the benefit<MH1157> of our people<MH5971a> and the cities<MH5892b> of our God<MH430>; and may the LORD<MH3068> do<MH6213a> what<MH2896a> is<MH2896a> good<MH2896a> in His sight<MH5869>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_chronicles/19-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>So Joab<MH3097> and the people<MH5971a> who<MH834> were with him advanced<MH5066> to battle<MH4421> against<MH6440> the Arameans<MH758>, and they fled<MH5127> from him. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_chronicles/19-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>When the sons<MH1121> of Ammon<MH5983> saw<MH7200> that the Arameans<MH758> had fled<MH5127>, they also<MH1571> fled<MH5127> from his brother<MH251> Abshai<MH52> and entered<MH935> the city<MH5892b>. Then Joab<MH3097> came<MH935> to Jerusalem<MH3389>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_chronicles/19-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>When the Arameans<MH758> saw<MH7200> that they had been <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>defeated<MH5062> by Israel<MH3478>, they sent<MH7971> messengers<MH4397> and brought<MH3318> out<MH3318> the Arameans<MH758> who<MH834> were beyond<MH4480, 5676> the <i>Euphrates</i> River<MH5104>, with Shophach<MH7780> the commander<MH8269> of the army<MH6635> of Hadadezer<MH1909> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>leading<MH6440> them. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_chronicles/19-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>When it was reported<MH5046> to David<MH1732>, he gathered<MH622> all<MH3605> Israel<MH3478> together and crossed<MH5674a> the Jordan<MH3383>, and came<MH935> upon them and drew<MH6186a> up<MH6186a> in<MH6186a> formation<MH6186a> against<MH413> them. And when David<MH1732> drew<MH6186a> up<MH6186a> in battle<MH4421> formation<MH4421> against<MH7122> the Arameans<MH758>, they fought<MH3898a> against<MH5973> him. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_chronicles/19-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>And the Arameans<MH758> fled<MH5127> from Israel<MH3478>, and David<MH1732> killed<MH2026> of the Arameans<MH758> seven<MH7651> thousand<MH505> charioteers<MH7393> and forty<MH705> thousand<MH505> foot<MH7273> soldiers<MH376, 7273>; and he put<MH4191> Shophach<MH7780> the commander<MH8269> of the army<MH6635> to<MH4191> death<MH4191>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_chronicles/19-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>So when the servants<MH5650> of Hadadezer<MH1909> saw<MH7200> that they had been <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>defeated<MH5062> by Israel<MH3478>, they made<MH7999b> peace<MH7999b> with David<MH1732> and served<MH5647> him.
