So when my colleague mentioned that he’d been using generated imagery for day-to-day communication with his partner since July 2022, I had to learn more.</p><p id="9ed9" class="pw-post-body-paragraph nw nx hj ny b ih nz oa ob ik oc od oe of og oh oi oj ok ol om on oo op oq or gn bk">I have to admit, when social networking companies started incorporating the ability to generate images into their apps I scoffed a little. It felt too forced, a feature driven by the availability of a new, exciting technology rather than a user need.</p><p id="4b59" class="pw-post-body-paragraph nw nx hj ny b ih nz oa ob ik oc od oe of og oh oi oj ok ol om on oo op oq or gn bk">But after talking to Grady I realize now that I was wrong. For him, generated images fulfill a unique role in his interactions with his partner — they’re more expressive than emojis, more personal than memes. I’d been hearing about generative image models since the days of <a class="af ix" href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Generative_adversarial_network" rel="noopener ugc nofollow" target="_blank">GANs</a> and <a class="af ix" href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Variational_autoencoder#:~:text=In%20machine%20learning%2C%20a%20variational,scheme%20of%20a%20variational%20autoencoder." rel="noopener ugc nofollow" target="_blank">VAEs</a>, but this was the first one I could easily play with. My first prompts were much like many others’ first prompts to image generation models: “Cat.” “Funny cat.” “Cat in the style of Picasso.”</p><p id="9f8a" class="pw-post-body-paragraph nw nx hj ny b ih nz oa ob ik oc od oe of og oh oi oj ok ol om on oo op oq or gn bk">It changed when my partner, Florence, told me that our friend was sick and she was going visit her.</p><p id="4c59" class="pw-post-body-paragraph nw nx hj ny b ih nz oa ob ik oc od oe of og oh oi oj ok ol om on oo op oq or gn bk">An idea struck. <strong class="ny hk">Would Imagen be up to the task of making our friend a digital get-well-soon card?</strong> I remembered that she has a dog, an excitable Chihuahua named Nacho, and I thought a get-well message from Nacho might really cheer her up. Florence texted to tell me that she was taking advantage of my absence to turn up the heat in our apartment. There was something here that didn’t exist before: a new way to share a joke, make a connection, create a moment of delight.</p><p id="dd5f" class="pw-post-body-paragraph nw nx hj ny b ih nz oa ob ik oc od oe of og oh oi oj ok ol om on oo op oq or gn bk">The ability to personalize the images to the recipient is a huge source of that delight. Florence loves Roman history. They take their place among text and emoji as a component of our shared language, but they play a unique role:</p><ol class=""><li id="a969" class="nw nx hj ny b ih nz oa ob ik oc od oe of og oh oi oj ok ol om on oo op oq or qm qn qo bk">They take more effort to make than a string of emojis, and so they communicate a higher degree of consideration. Florence will notice some detail and ask about the prompt I used for it, or share her enjoyment of the way something was depicted.</li><li id="3f7b" class="nw nx hj ny b ih qp oa ob ik qq od oe of qr oh oi oj qs ol om on qt op oq or qm qn qo bk">They can draw on a broad range of settings, figures, and visual metaphors, making them quite expressive.</li></ol><p id="976e" class="pw-post-body-paragraph nw nx hj ny b ih nz oa ob ik oc od oe of og oh oi oj ok ol om on oo op oq or gn bk">They’re different from memes. The impact of a meme comes from the connection between a widely recognized shared experience and a personal experience. Generated images communicate more directly through their visual details.</p><p id="2c6f" class="pw-post-body-paragraph nw nx hj ny b ih nz oa ob ik oc od oe of og oh oi oj ok ol om on oo op oq or gn bk">They’re different from emojis too. Emojis are a kind of “textual body language” — a tool that lets us add another layer of emotional texture to a text message.</p><p id="5395" class="pw-post-body-paragraph nw nx hj ny b ih nz oa ob ik oc od oe of og oh oi oj ok ol om on oo op oq or gn bk">Still, I struggled with the issue of resemblance. We had a history of using whale emojis 🐳🐋 for Florence, and a robot emoji, 🤖, for me. We often exchanged love poems in the form: 🤖💜🐳 and 🐳😋🍜, so adopting a whale and robot as mascots in generated images felt natural.</p><p id="f77a" class="pw-post-body-paragraph nw nx hj ny b ih nz oa ob ik oc od oe of og oh oi oj ok ol om on oo op oq or gn bk">Once I made this conceptual leap, it greatly expanded how expressive I could be.
