This may be set in the “Early 15th Century Somewhere in the Kingdom of P” and involve religion “C” but we all know who, what, and where this series is talking about.</p> <p>Rafal is a smart kid, too smart for his own good—but still smart enough to know how to play the “game” of his time. You do what those in charge say and repeat what they want to hear. Does your adopted father say to study theology? You do it. The Church says the Earth is the center of the universe, you not only agree but memorize the “proof” so that you can recite it at the drop of a hat. There's one problem, Rafal has his own wants and needs—his own interests and personality. And honestly, in a world where anyone and everyone will rat you out at the drop of a hat just so they don't end up implicated alongside you, I'd be shocked if this doesn't end with him getting killed in some brutal fashion.</p> <p>What we're left with is a show that's well-written, true to its vision, and has some great animation to top it all off. But outweighing all that is the unbearably heavy sense of dread hanging over the whole story. This is the epitome of a show I'd watch once, praise the hell out of, and never touch again—despite, or perhaps because of, the impact it left on me. It's not bad enough that your whole family could get plagued to death if the wrong dude sneezed on you or that a simple cut on the finger could develop sepsis and kill you outright; if you dared to think thoughts that stepped out of line with the conventional wisdom of the Powers That Be (aka the Church), then all bets were off. Getting your fingernails ripped off before a swift execution was one of the good ways to go. <p>I'd like to think that our main character in <cite class="e anime">Orb: On the Movements of the Earth</cite> is a handy stand-in for the self-insert thought experiment I'm sure a lot of us have played out in our lives. If we were the ones to wake up in the 16th century, well, obviously, we would have a leg-up on all of the peasants and rubes around us. We would be able to use our mighty logic and <cite class="e person">REASON'</cite> to climb to the upper echelons of society or reveal the truths of this dark age that seem so obvious to us now. How about heliocentrism, for example?</p> <p>Now, what you would swiftly discover in just such a scenario isn't that your main conflict would be the stupidity of the people around you. People weren't stupid back then to begin with; at least, no more so than they are capable of being in the Year of Our Lord, 2024. They are uninformed, maybe, and ignorant to the invisible elements of nature that they didn't have the capacity to observe yet, but they weren't stupid. No, the real problem is that everyone would be tired, sick, overworked, and, most significantly, afraid. Who the hell has time to worry about crap like science when the price of looking too far askance of your culturally mandated blinders is, at best, grueling agony and imprisonment? </p> <p>What makes <cite>Orb</cite> such a compelling drama is that it places a bright and manipulative young lad with a genuine knack for science smack into the middle of a society that only has so much tolerance for words and deeds that go beyond what God and His servants deem necessary. Astronomy is all well and good when it is a tool that can reinforce the values that everyone has already agreed are true, just as medicine is an incredible tool for keeping the flock healthy and tithing. The minute you start to uncover forgotten truths and entirely new modes of thought that threaten the sanctity of the status quo, though? Well, let's just say that Mel Brooks got it wrong with that little ditty back in the day, because everyone should expect the Inquisition to come knocking at your door when you can't even trust your own family to put their children above their duty to power.</p> <p>When you combine <cite>Orb</cite>'s rich and nuanced historical storytelling with the moody music and animation that <cite class="e company"><a href="/encyclopedia/company.php?id=48">Madhouse</a></cite> has brought to this production, then you get one of this season's clear winners. It threw me when the show opened with a man getting tortured by having his jaw broken, followed by a pile of fingernails. It's graphic stuff, and you don't have to use torture to get me to admit that I am more squeamish than most—I'm the kind of person who liked the contemplative second season of <cite class="e anime">Vinland Saga</cite> much more than the hyperviolence of the first. <p>I bring up <cite class="e anime">Vinland Saga</cite> as a point of comparison because that's <cite>Orb</cite>'s closest relative in terms of general mood. <cite>Orb</cite> isn't strictly historical fiction; it takes place in totally-not-Poland, a kingdom known only by the letter P, where the people have names like Kochanski and Badeni. I imagine this is to excuse any historical inaccuracies and ahistorical figures, not to mention the totally period-inaccurate hairstyles. One thing it devotes considerable historical detail to, however, is the cruelties of the Catholic Church. There's a graphic burning at the stake, in addition to the aforementioned torture devices; even without it, Hubert's melted, scarred face speaks volumes. It makes the whole affair a bit hard for us sensitive sorts to watch, even if I appreciate its unflinchingness.</p> <p>This is also essential to creating the main thrust of the series—we may take the heliocentric model of the solar system for granted in modern days, but once upon a time, that was a groundbreaking and daring assertion. It flew in the face of common sense. It was heretical. If the Earth and humanity weren't at the center of the universe, what did that mean about our place in God's heart… or even about the very existence of God? <cite>Orb</cite> must set up that context because it's just so hard to see it as controversial. There's a profundity in Hubert's assertion, that his own faith is grounded in the beauty of nature, and that alone drives him to find an elegant model of the cosmos; it contrasts deeply with Novak, the Inquisitor who cheerfully says that he's driven solely by wanting to keep society stable so his daughter can grow up in safety rather than any grand ideal. </p> <p>To be honest, that scene alone earned it a four-star rating. If it weren't for that, I would have given the show a lower rating for promoting incorrect theories. The Inquisition is a prime example, and Orb: On the Movement of the Earth doesn't shy away from showing it. The opening moments show an inquisitor using a choke pear (alternatively called a “pear of anguish” or a “Spanish pear”) to break someone's jaw, a scene followed by the graphic ripping out of someone's fingernails. Later in the first episode, we see a man being burned to death, while in the second episode, the pear makes a return. At this point, two monks who travel with the inquisitor marvel at the fact that he's a layperson, wondering how a former mercenary, a man with blood on his hands, could possibly do the Lord's work. It's a brilliant bit of irony.<p>Set in “the Kingdom of P” (so totally not Poland) in the late Medieval/early <cite class="e company">RENAISSANCE</cite> period, <cite>Orb</cite> does for heliocentrism what <cite class="e anime">Vinland Saga</cite> does for Vikings. It's a clearly researched period piece following the harrowing journey of scientists dogged by a religious organization and the various ways said organization attempted to stamp out what it saw as a threat to itself. (That would be “the C religion,” which isn't coy at all.) It's also brutal as all get out, and if I hadn't read the manga and known what was coming, I would have had to turn the episode off immediately.</p> <p>But it's hard to deny that <cite>Orb</cite> is telling an interesting story. Our protagonist (for now) is Rafal, a young orphan taken in by a priest named Potocki, who would like to see his intelligent charge go to university and devote himself to the Church. Rafal, however, has an interest in astronomy, and that's only solidified when Potocki tries to do a good deed by taking in a supposedly reformed heretic named Hubert. Hubert, of course, teaches Rafal about the theory of heliocentrism, which blows Rafal's mind…and makes a lot of sense when he stops being afraid to think about it. Hubert essentially sets Rafal on the path to science while also reminding him that this road is very likely to lead to death, which ought to remind us not to get too attached to anybody.</p> <p>In the case of Nowak, the inquisitor, that's remarkably easy. Nowak is the worst humanity has to offer, yawning at the scene of an execution because the victim is taking too long to die, casually using his pear of anguish to get a child's ball out of a tree, and then proclaiming how he can't ignore a crying child while torturing said child's father. His bloody sleeves show that he really doesn't care about what he's doing, or at the very least, doesn't think that it's wrong, and that may be the scariest thing of all. Honestly, these episodes were far more terrifying than anything in <cite class="e anime"><a href="/encyclopedia/manga.php?id=1249">Uzumaki</a></cite>.</p> <p><cite>Orb</cite> isn't going to be an easy watch. It has no guaranteed good ending, much less a happy one. Its art isn't particularly attractive, and the one character guaranteed to stick around is incredibly hateable.
