En premier lieu, elle justifie chez Ripa la composition-même de son ouvrage, lui qui entend analyser la méthode permettant de donner une forme sensible à la définition – au sens aristotélicien – des concepts<sup><a href="#footnote_2_20582" id="identifier_2_20582" class="footnote-link footnote-identifier-link" title="Cesare Ripa, « Proemio » dans Iconologia overo Descrittione Dell’imagini Universali cavate dall’Antichità et da altri luoghi, Rome, Heredi di Giovanni Giggliotti, 1593.">3</a></sup>. Dès le titre, il indique décrire des images universelles « tirées de l’Antiquité et d’autres lieux<sup><a href="#footnote_3_20582" id="identifier_3_20582" class="footnote-link footnote-identifier-link" title="Voir note 1.">4</a></sup> ». Pour appuyer sa démarche, dans son <em>Proemio</em>, il se réfère à Aristote, à Platon, à Pythagore et plus généralement aux « philosophes » et aux « prophètes », mais aussi à la « sapience des Égyptiens », fut-ce pour la critiquer.</p> <p>Ce sont encore ces références qui lui servent d’argument dans le corps d’ouvrage, l’humaniste italien n’hésitant pas à additionner les sources pour motiver ses propositions iconographiques. Ils en appellent aux sources littéraires antiques comme autant d’autorités qui prouvent que non seulement on peut représenter tel ou tel concept de telle ou telle manière, mais encore, on le doit. Pourtant, plus les éditions se multiplient, plus les compositions proposées et l’interprétation des attributs varient d’un iconologiste à l’autre. Les causes de ce phénomène sont bien connues. Elles trouvent leur origine dans les premières fouilles entreprises en Italie qui favorisent les débuts de l’archéologie et stimulent le commerce des œuvres d’art. À son tour, le dynamisme du marché de l’art soutenu par ces découvertes provoque un engouement extraordinaire pour les antiquités grecques et romaines et conduit à la formation des collections des premiers musées publics, aussi bien en Italie qu’en Allemagne<sup><a href="#footnote_0_18664" id="identifier_0_18664" class="footnote-link footnote-identifier-link" title="Pomian, 2020. Decultot, 2006, 18-19.">1</a></sup>. Décrites par les historiens d’art, ces collections suscitent de nombreuses vocations d’antiquaires, férus de vases grecs, de bas-reliefs, de statuaire, et attisent la curiosité des artistes pour lesquels le voyage en Italie s’impose désormais comme un « rite de passage professionnel<sup><a href="#footnote_1_18664" id="identifier_1_18664" class="footnote-link footnote-identifier-link" title="Bertrand, 2008, 72.">2</a></sup>».</p> <p style="text-align: justify">Ainsi, le renouveau esthétique qui touche à cette époque aussi bien les domaines de la peinture, de la sculpture, que ceux de l’architecture et des arts décoratifs, se caractérise essentiellement par un « retour à l’antique ». Le collectionneur <a href="https://data.bnf.fr/atelier/11895648/anne_claude_philippe_de_caylus/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Caylus</a>, le sculpteur <a href="https://data.bnf.fr/16855316/jacques_firmin_beauvarlet_edme_bouchardon__sculpteur_ordinaire_du_roy__professeur_en_son_academie_de_peinture___de_sculpture__decede_le_27_juillet_1762/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Bouchardon </a>et le peintre <a href="https://data.bnf.fr/12109720/joseph-marie_vien/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Vien </a>firent partie de ceux qui, en France, contribuèrent très activement à la diffusion des chefs-d’œuvre de l’Antiquité. Chacun à sa façon, ils eurent l’ambition de régénérer l’art contemporain, qu’ils jugeaient décadent, par l’art antique, porteur d’inspiration. Tournant le dos aux fantaisies de l’art rocaille, ils défendaient une ligne plus austère, qui trouva son plein épanouissement dans ce qu’on a appelé précisément à cette époque-là « le goût à la grecque ».</p> <p style="text-align: justify">Y a-t-il eu un « goût grec » à l’Opéra aussi fort, aussi puissant, que celui que l’on observe dans le champ des beaux-arts, de la mode et des arts décoratifs ? Comment s’est-il manifesté et quels en ont été les principaux promoteurs ? De quelle manière les compositeurs, les librettistes, les chorégraphes, les dessinateurs de décors et de costume se sont-ils approprié le langage de l’Antiquité, remis au goût du jour par les travaux des érudits ? Ont-ils rencontré des résistances ? spectacle, de ses décors, de ses costumes, peut constituer un long processus jalonné parfois par la réapparition inopinée et progressive sur le marché de l’art de dessins, voire s’apparenter à un parcours semé de pièges quand, en particulier, certains de ces témoins portent des inscriptions d’époque fautives. Aussi est-il vital de confronter cette iconographie non seulement avec les didascalies des livrets mais aussi avec toutes les données, même lacunaires, fournies par les archives et quelquefois par la presse contemporaine de la création de l’ouvrage.</p> <p style="text-align: justify">On verra ici que, contrairement aux apparences, des projets de décors annotés <a href="https://catalogue.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/cb309787158" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><em>Mystères d’Isis</em></a>, selon le titre choisi pour les représentations de <em>La Flûte enchantée</em> de <a href="https://data.bnf.fr/fr/14027233/wolfgang_amadeus_mozart/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Mozart</a> (1756-1791) à l’Opéra de Paris en 1801, se rapportent en réalité à une autre œuvre, donnée l’année suivante dans le même théâtre. Il s’agit de <a href="https://catalogue.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/cb409166470" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><em>Sémiramis</em></a>, une tragédie lyrique en trois actes de <a href="https://data.bnf.fr/fr/14785137/charles-simon_catel/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Charles-Simon Catel</a> (1773-1830), professeur au Conservatoire de Musique et auteur d’un <a href="https://catalogue.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/cb42896753z" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><em>Traité d’harmonie</em></a> en 1801. Si <em>Les Mystères d’Isis</em> et <em>Sémiramis</em> ont en commun de traiter d’un sujet oriental – l’un se situant dans l’Égypte antique, l’autre à Babylone –, leurs décors ne sauraient être confondus. La grotte de Lascaux aurait été découverte par un chien prénommé Robot : en pourchassant un lapin il aurait permis à quatre enfants de découvrir l’une des plus importantes grottes ornées du Paléolithique. Les animaux ne découvrent pas que des grottes, ils peuvent aussi mettre au jour des trésors ! Deux histoires tirées de l’inépuisable flot des faits divers ont récemment attiré notre attention. En 2017, en Thaïlande, une <a href="https://phys.org/news/2017-03-surgeons-coins-swallowed-thai-sea.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">tortue dut être opérée</a> pour lui retirer les 915 monnaies d’argent qu’elle avait ingurgitées. En France en 2019, c’est une <a href="https://www.ouest-france.fr/sciences/animaux/la-pie-voleuse-du-chateau-de-versailles-cachait-un-tresor-de-1-131-pieces-6457265" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">pie qui est suspectée</a> d’avoir rassemblé dans son nid du parc du château de Versailles 1131 pièces de monnaies, majoritairement des centimes d’euros.</p> <p>A la BnF, le <a href="https://www.bnf.fr/fr/departement-monnaies-medailles-antiques" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">département des Monnaies, médailles et antiques</a> conserve à la fois de nombreuses monnaies, dont beaucoup proviennent de trésors, et les archives relatives aux trésors étudiés, notamment dans le cadre du programme « <a href="https://antiquitebnf.hypotheses.org/8256" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Trouvailles monétaires</a> ». Nous proposons ici de rassembler différentes mentions de trésors découverts par des animaux éparpillées dans la littérature spécialisée ou dans les archives.</p> <p><figure id="attachment_8408" En revanche, la valorisation des origines pré-romaines de la péninsule qui a largement émaillé la construction nationale italienne depuis le milieu du XVIII<sup>e</sup> siècle jusqu’à la prise de Rome, en 1870, est un sujet beaucoup moins étudié par les historiens et pratiquement méconnu du grand public.</p> <p style="text-align: justify">Cet article propose quelques pistes de recherche sur cette problématique, largement pluridisciplinaire, qui en quelques décennies connaît des élaborations différentes reflétant les profonds changements politiques de la péninsule dans ses tentatives d’unité nationale. Bonaparte, à la tête de l’aventure, souhaite inscrire cette expédition dans la lignée de celles de <a href="http://data.bnf.fr/11893227/louis_antoine_de_bougainville/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Louis-Antoine Bougainville</a>, de <a href="http://data.bnf.fr/fr/11897579/james_cook/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">James Cook</a> ou de <a href="http://data.bnf.fr/fr/11911032/jean-francois_de_galaup_la_perouse/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Jean-François de la Pérouse</a>.</p> <p style="text-align: justify">En juillet, se mêlant aux rangs de l’armée d’Orient, débarquent ainsi sur les côtes alexandrines les membres de la <a href="http://data.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/cb14946043t" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Commission des sciences et des arts</a><sup><a href="#footnote_1_3127" id="identifier_1_3127" class="footnote-link footnote-identifier-link" title="Le 16 mars 1798, le Directoire adresse au Ministre de l’Intérieur l’arrêté confidentiel suivant : « Le Directoire exécutif, citoyen ministre, vous charge de mettre à la disposition du général Bonaparte les ingénieurs, artistes et autres subordonnés de votre ministère, ainsi que les différents objets qu’il vous demandera pour servit à l’expédition dont il est chargé. » Le groupe de savants qui accompagnera l’armée d’Orient en Égypte est officiellement créé.">2</a></sup>. Pendant les quatre années que durera l’aventure égyptienne, cette troupe hétéroclite de plus de 160 savants voit se côtoyer des hommes de formations et de spécialités diverses : ingénieurs pour la plupart, ils sont également antiquaires, architectes, astronomes, chimistes, mathématiciens, médecins ou pharmaciens, mécaniciens, musiciens, naturalistes et minéralogistes, dessinateurs, graveurs ou encore sculpteurs.</p> <p style="text-align: justify">Parmi eux, <a href="http://data.bnf.fr/fr/12421814/henri-joseph_redoute/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Henri-Joseph Redouté</a><sup><a href="#footnote_2_3127" id="identifier_2_3127" class="footnote-link footnote-identifier-link" title="Né à Saint-Hubert, en Ardenne, dans la province de Luxembourg, il y est baptisé le 25 mai 1766. La <a href="https://www.retronews.fr/search#allTerms=Campagne%20d%27Egypte&sort=score&page=1&searchIn=web-item" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Campagne d’Égypte</a> s’accompagne d’une visée scientifique avec la <a href="https://gallica.bnf.fr/blog/16052018/lexpedition-degypte-et-la-naissance-de-linstitut-degypte" target="_blank" rel="noopener">création de l’Institut d’Égypte</a>. Ce dernier pilote la première enquête systématique du pays dans tous ses aspects: ruines antiques, vie moderne, sciences naturelles… que les savants documentent avec force <a href="https://gallica.bnf.fr/blog/30032015/les-dessins-de-la-commission-degypte-1798-1829" target="_blank" rel="noopener">notes et dessins</a>. Pour s’en convaincre, il n’est que de citer les œuvres de Lully, <a href="http://catalogue.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/cb39788713p" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><em>Isis</em></a> (1677) et <a href="http://catalogue.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/cb43122976p" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><em>Phaéton </em></a>(1683), de Desmarets, <a href="http://catalogue.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/cb39783486v" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><em>Théagène et Cariclée</em></a> (1695), de Rameau, <a href="http://catalogue.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/cb41428535p" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><em>Les Fêtes de l’Hymen et de l’Amour ou les Dieux d’Égypte</em></a> (1748) ou encore de Salieri, <a href="http://catalogue.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/cb30387068v" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><em>Les Danaïdes</em></a> (1784). Elle est tirée d’un roman d’Alessandro Verri publié en 1784 <a href="https://gallica.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/btv1b8595081s/f5.item" target="_blank" rel="noopener" data-mce-href="https://gallica.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/btv1b8595081s/f5.item"><em>Le Avventure di Saffo </em></a>qui a connu un immense <a href="https://books.openedition.org/efr/32492" target="_blank" rel="noopener" data-mce-href="https://books.openedition.org/efr/32492">succès d’édition en Europe</a>. Reprenant un procédé habituel de son époque visant à intéresser son lectorat tout en évitant la censure, Verri prétend que son roman est une simple traduction italienne d’un manuscrit rare en grec ancien. En réalité, il s’est inspiré d’un mythe postérieur à la vie de Sappho, lui-même <a href="https://gallica.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/bpt6k9786033z/f218.image" target="_blank" rel="noopener" data-mce-href="https://gallica.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/bpt6k9786033z/f218.image">repris par Ovide</a>, poète latin du I<sup>er</sup> siècle ap. Dans sa version, Verri met l’accent sur l’âge de la poétesse : trop vieille pour continuer à plaire à Phaon, elle se lamente en apprenant que celui-ci fréquente une jeune fille. Le décor naturel et la position alanguie de Sappho donnent cependant une coloration romantique à cet imaginaire antique. La lyre devient un symbole de sentimentalisme avant d’être un attribut des qualités musicales de Sappho. En effet, la poétesse est d’autant plus passionnée qu’elle est incapable de jouer de son instrument.</p> <p>La légende de l’image joue elle aussi sur une pseudo-authenticité philologique : ΦΑΙΝΟΜΑΙ ΑΠΝΟΥΣ « je me trouve sans souffle » est bien une citation d’un poème de Sappho transmis par le <a href="https://gallica.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/bpt6k9613570v/f180.item" target="_blank" rel="noopener" data-mce-href="https://gallica.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/bpt6k9613570v/f180.item"><em>Traité du Sublime </em></a>de Longin et traduit pour la première fois en français par <a href="https://gallica.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/bpt6k8701042z/f460.item" target="_blank" rel="noopener" data-mce-href="https://gallica.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/bpt6k8701042z/f460.item">Anne Dacier</a>. Ce poème, écrit à la première personne, décrit les symptômes du désir homoérotique ressenti par la locutrice à la vue d’une femme accompagnée par un homme non-identifié. Or, dans le contexte du roman de Verri, la citation est complètement détournée pour donner l’impression que c’est la pensée pour Phaon qui est à l’origine de cette perte de souffle.</p> <p>Cette image illustre ainsi parfaitement le processus qui a abouti à la création d’un lyrisme moderne entre la fin du XVIII<sup>e</sup> siècle et le début du XIX<sup>e</sup> siècle. En partant d’un imaginaire fantasmé de la poésie amoureuse grecque, les auteurs rompent avec la rationalité néoclassique, faisant de la lyre un symbole de la spontanéité des sentiments, et reléguant ainsi au second plan les qualités musicales des poètes dont ils prétendent s’inspirer. Ce processus annonciateur du romantisme est ici accompagné d’une double invisibilisation visant à faire de Sappho une figure de la femme amoureuse par excellence : effacement de l’homoérotisme de ses poèmes, et focalisation sur ses sentiments au détriment de ses qualités musicales.
