A <i>samizdat</i> publisher of leaflets critical of people in power, she was fired from her job on 7 August 1980, five months before her retirement. Sympathy for her led to a strike at the shipyard, which catalyzed the organization of the Solidarnosc trade union, who listed Walentynowicz's reinstatement among their demands for ending the strike. Led by <a href="/people/420/000024348/">Lech Walesa</a>, the union was outlawed a year later with the declaration of martial law, but eventually prevailed with the overthrow of the Polish Communists in 1989; however Walentynowicz remained critical of the new government and other political movements that followed.<p><b>Father:</b> (d.
