He auditioned for Operation Pacific and landed the part of Lt. Bob Perry, receiving fifth billing. Warner signed him that year, and subsequent roles in films such as I Was a Communist for the FBI (1951), This Woman Is Dangerous (1952), and the like were also remarkably good roles for a a newcomer. Carey switched his film contract to Columbia Pictures in 1953. Three years later, he was one of three main characters in an NBC adventure, Tales of the 77th Bengal Lancers, and then he was offered a television show of his own, Philip Marlowe, playing a private detective. The 1960s and 1970s saw him working steadily, doing good work. A memorable 1971 episode of All in the Family as a gay friend of Archie Bunker was one of the first positive depictions of homosexuality on television, and certainly the highest profile. Carey hit his stride in 1979 with the role of his lifetime, playing Asa Buchanan on the soap One Life to Live. Buchanan, an oil billionaire and patriarch of his family, often manipulated his relatives behind the scenes. During the course of the show, he was married fourteen times. In 2006, Carey was diagnosed with lung cancer, his involvement with the show lessened but not ended until 2007, apart from a few post-mortem appearances in 2008. He died 2009 in New York City.
Wife: Maureen Peppler (m. 1949, div., one son, two daughters)
Son: Jeff
Daughter: Linda
Daughter: Lisa
Wife: Colleen Welch (m. 1974, until his death, one daughter, one son)
Daughter: Shannon (b. 1980)
Son: Sean (b. 1983)

University: University of Miami Florida

Endorsement of Granny Goose Potato Chips
Risk Factors: Lung Cancer

TELEVISION
One Life to Live Asa Buchanan (1979-2007)
Laredo Capt.
