the competencies your students will need to meet the new standards.</p> <p>As the new program designed to raise educational standards, the Florida Standards makes explicit what students should know at key stages of their development. In the language of education, the Florida Standards describe a set of “outcomes,” skills and competencies that students should take away from the classroom. For more than 30 years, Poynter has conducted writing camps for students and teachers, investing millions of dollars in literacy efforts in Florida, around the nation, and across the globe. The leader of this effort is Dr. Roy Peter Clark, author of Free to Write, Coaching Writers, Writing Tools, The Glamour of Grammar, Help! For Writers, and How to Write Short. With a team of influential public school teachers, Dr. Clark will help teachers make sense of the reading/writing connection that is at the center of the Florida Standards reforms. <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20150624015406/http://goo.gl/forms/v5QrgOnAzF">Apply today.</a></p> <p><strong><span class="caps">DAY</span> 1:</strong> Reading and Writing Narratives (Real or Imagined). Using classic adult and children’s literature, teachers will explore mentor texts, not just to enhance critical reading abilities, but also to inspire writers to engage in their own story telling.</p> <p><strong><span class="caps">DAY</span> 2:</strong> Reading and Writing to Inform and Explain. One method of enhancing reading comprehension is to have readers write to learn. Teachers will examine texts that inform and explain. They will then learn rhetorical strategies of clarity that can be passed along to students.</p> <p><strong><span class="caps">DAY</span> 3:</strong> Reading and Writing for Opinion and Argument. Opinions are everywhere, but informed opinions are rare – and the most powerful. Teachers will study texts that can be used as the foundation for an opinion or as evidence for an argument.</p> <p><strong>Over the course of three days, teachers will have their choice of smaller breakout sessions on topics such as:</strong></p> <ul> <li>Conferring with writers</li> <li>Oral language skills</li> <li>Writing tools</li> <li>Forms of assessment</li> <li>Visual literacy</li> <li>Multimedia</li> <li>Use of evidence</li> <li>Mentor and companion texts</li> </ul> <p><span class="caps">SPECIAL</span> <span class="caps">NOTE</span>: All the material in this year’s institute has been updated. Teachers who attended in 2014 are encouraged to participate again in 2015 to update their skills.
