class="js-work-more-abstract-untruncated hidden">In this work, an easy, reliable, effective approach for preparation of modified Boron Nitride ( BN ) from h -BN ( Hexagonal boron nitride) was developed via liquid-phase exfoliation using a dopamine chemistry. Supramolecular interactions of the polydopamine (PDA) with h -BN has been used to achieve the facile surface modification of h -BN by forming a PDA shell on its surface. The successful and effective preparation of different h- BN -PDA hybrids has been confirmed by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Raman spectroscopy, XRD, IR and TGA investigations. The PDA coating increases the dispersibility of these hybrids as filler in polymers. Since polymer-based thermal interface materials (TIMs) with excellent thermal conductivity and electrical resistivity are in high demand, epoxy composites filled with h- BN , BBN (Ball milled Boron Nitride), MBN (Modified Boron Nitride) and MBBN (Modified Ball milled Boron Nitride) were processed. The thermal conductivity is as high as 4 W/mK for MBBN as compared with 0.2 W/mK of neat epoxy. BZPN was obtained by strong mineral acid catalyzed reaction of 4,4 0-dihydroxybenzophenone (BZP) and paraformaldehyde. The formation of BZPNE and BZPN was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, proton and carbon nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, gel permeation chromatography, and epoxy equivalent weight. Different blends of BZPNE with diglycidyl ether of bisphenol-A (DGEBA; EEW $180) were cured using dicyandiamide were characterized by thermogravimetric analysis, thermomechanical analysis, dynamic mechanical analysis, and interfacial property between aluminum adherends at ambient and elevated temperature. Thermal properties were found to improve on increasing quantity of BZPNE in DGEBA as it is evidenced from glass transition temperature (T g). Likewise, no deterioration in interfacial properties was observed with the highest quantity of BZPNE (30%) in DGEBA blend, when tested at 150 8C. However, the low surface energy leading to poor wetting and reduced adhesion curtails the scope of their wide-spread usage. In this work, we report adhesion promoter primers based on epoxy–catechol with and without fluorinated polymer and investigated their adhesion promotion efficiency on low/high surface energy substrates. The rational design of catechol-fluorine-epoxy hybrid network, mimicking mussel chemistry enabled a non-destructive surface activating approach resulting in profound adhesion promotion. The fluorine containing primer could effectively enhance adhesion between homo and hetero interfaces of Aluminium/HDPE/PTFE owing to the good interface interaction and could outperform common etching methods. A series of molecular level characterizations together with computational and AFM studies provided evidences for the high degree of interaction of the primer between the substrates and epoxy-based adhesives. Bond integrity endurance test using a weight of 10 and 20 kg resulted in ‘no fail’ categorization for the primed substrates during the entire 40 days test duration. N,N,N′,N′-tetraglycidyl-4, 4′diaminodiphenylmethane (TGDDM) was cured with three types of tertiary amine curing agents including 1-methyl imidazole (MI), 2-methyl imidazole (2MI) and 2-ethyl 4-methyl imidazole (EMI). These systems exhibited cure initiation at around 70–90 °C by DSC. 2-methyl imidazole and 2-ethyl 4-methyl imidazole showed two cure initiation profiles, while the 1-substituted counterpart, MI, showed a single cure initiation profile by DSC. The Kissinger equation was applied to calculate the apparent activation energy for epoxy–imidazole cure reactions. The rate constants and the pre-exponential factor were also determined. The activation energy varied from 59 to 65 kJ mol−1 for the systems. The Flynn–Wall–Ozawa iso-conversional approach was used to elucidate the activation energies at different extents of conversion during the cure reactions. The cured systems are found thermally stable up to 250 °C. Decomposition kinetics of cured networks was studied using Kissinger equation and Flynn–Wall–Ozawa iso-conversional approach. Supramolecular interactions of the polydopamine (PDA) with h -BN has been used to achieve the facile surface modification of h -BN by forming a PDA shell on its surface. The successful and effective preparation of different h- BN -PDA hybrids has been confirmed by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Raman spectroscopy, XRD, IR and TGA investigations. The PDA coating increases the dispersibility of these hybrids as filler in polymers. Since polymer-based thermal interface materials (TIMs) with excellent thermal conductivity and electrical resistivity are in high demand, epoxy composites filled with h- BN , BBN (Ball milled Boron Nitride), MBN (Modified Boron Nitride) and MBBN (Modified Ball milled Boron Nitride) were processed. The thermal conductivity is as high as 4 W/mK for MBBN as compared with 0.2 W/mK of neat epoxy. BZPN was obtained by strong mineral acid catalyzed reaction of 4,4 0-dihydroxybenzophenone (BZP) and paraformaldehyde. The formation of BZPNE and BZPN was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, proton and carbon nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, gel permeation chromatography, and epoxy equivalent weight. Different blends of BZPNE with diglycidyl ether of bisphenol-A (DGEBA; EEW $180) were cured using dicyandiamide were characterized by thermogravimetric analysis, thermomechanical analysis, dynamic mechanical analysis, and interfacial property between aluminum adherends at ambient and elevated temperature. Thermal properties were found to improve on increasing quantity of BZPNE in DGEBA as it is evidenced from glass transition temperature (T g). Likewise, no deterioration in interfacial properties was observed with the highest quantity of BZPNE (30%) in DGEBA blend, when tested at 150 8C. Cure kinetics of compositions were studied by nonisothermal differential scanning calorimetry and Kissinger method was used to compute the kinetic parameters such as frequency factor (A), activation energy (E a) followed by the dependency of rate constant (k) on temperature of different blends. However, the low surface energy leading to poor wetting and reduced adhesion curtails the scope of their wide-spread usage. In this work, we report adhesion promoter primers based on epoxy–catechol with and without fluorinated polymer and investigated their adhesion promotion efficiency on low/high surface energy substrates. The rational design of catechol-fluorine-epoxy hybrid network, mimicking mussel chemistry enabled a non-destructive surface activating approach resulting in profound adhesion promotion. The fluorine containing primer could effectively enhance adhesion between homo and hetero interfaces of Aluminium/HDPE/PTFE owing to the good interface interaction and could outperform common etching methods. A series of molecular level characterizations together with computational and AFM studies provided evidences for the high degree of interaction of the primer between the substrates and epoxy-based adhesives. Bond integrity endurance test using a weight of 10 and 20 kg resulted in ‘no fail’ categorization for the primed substrates during the entire 40 days test duration. N,N,N′,N′-tetraglycidyl-4, 4′diaminodiphenylmethane (TGDDM) was cured with three types of tertiary amine curing agents including 1-methyl imidazole (MI), 2-methyl imidazole (2MI) and 2-ethyl 4-methyl imidazole (EMI). These systems exhibited cure initiation at around 70–90 °C by DSC. 2-methyl imidazole and 2-ethyl 4-methyl imidazole showed two cure initiation profiles, while the 1-substituted counterpart, MI, showed a single cure initiation profile by DSC. The Kissinger equation was applied to calculate the apparent activation energy for epoxy–imidazole cure reactions. The rate constants and the pre-exponential factor were also determined. The activation energy varied from 59 to 65 kJ mol−1 for the systems. The Flynn–Wall–Ozawa iso-conversional approach was used to elucidate the activation energies at different extents of conversion during the cure reactions. The cured systems are found thermally stable up to 250 °C. Decomposition kinetics of cured networks was studied using Kissinger equation and Flynn–Wall–Ozawa iso-conversional approach.
