梅州市位于广东省东北部，闽、粤、赣三省交界处，全市总面积1.58万平方公里。现辖梅江区、兴宁市、梅县、平远县、蕉岭县、大埔县、丰顺县、五华县，500多万人。南汉乾和三年(公元945年)置敬州，北宋开宝四年(公元971年)改敬州为梅州，1949年后设兴梅地区、梅县地区，1988年由梅县地区改为梅州市，至今已有1000多年的历史，享有“文化之乡”、“足球之乡”、“华侨之乡”和“中国金柚之乡”、“中国单丛茶之乡”之美誉，是国家历史文化名城、全国双拥模范城市、广东省卫生城市，有“世界客都”之称。</FONT> 梅州名人辈出，是叶剑英元帅的故乡，清乾嘉年间的岭南才子宋湘，清末外交家、教育家黄遵宪，抗日志士、杰出诗人、教育家丘逢甲，著名的洋务运动家、军事家、全国四大藏书家之一的丁日昌，著名爱国侨领张弼士和现代亚洲球王李惠堂等都是梅州人。2003年以来，梅州全面实施“开放梅州、工业梅州、生态梅州、文化梅州”的发展战略，切实推动了山区经济的发展。2004年全市生产总值271.64亿元，比上年增长12.3%，增幅创十年来新高，其中第一、二、三产业分别增长3.1%、19.2%和11.4%。一般预算财政收入12.49亿元，首次突破10亿元大关，比增36.5%。</FONT> 在发展山区经济工作中，梅州市委、政府高度重视发展旅游业，把旅游业定位为第三产业的支柱产业，专门出台了《关于加快旅游业发展的若干意见》、《梅州市旅游管理规定》等一系列政策措施，推动了全市旅游业的快速发展，梅州旅游业发展潜力大、后劲足。2004年，全市共接待海内外旅游者268.13万人次，旅游总收入28.36亿元，同比分别增长34.6％和43.4％，旅游业已成为我市经济发展的新亮点。 </FONT> 梅州市旅游形象鲜明，特色突出。依托客家文化资源优势和生态、温热泉资源优势，梅州明确以“塑造世界客家之都，打造客家文化精品、热泉康体休闲特品和山水休闲度假名品（简称‘一都三品’）”为旅游发展定位，形成了以雁南飞茶田度假村和雁鸣湖旅游度假村为代表的客家文化和山水休闲度假旅游产品，以五华汤湖热矿泥浴山庄和丰顺千江温泉酒店为代表的热泉康体休闲旅游产品。同时，我市以“创优”为契机，努力强化城市的现代旅游功能，提升城市品位，建成了“一江两岸”亮点工程、两个表演场所（白天和晚上为游客表演的场所）、三个中心（国际会议中心、展览中心和游客咨询服务中心）、四条街（鸿都美食一条街、凌风路客家风情购物一条街、义化路步行街、梅江大道霓虹灯一条街）。改造新建一批城区旅游厕所，城市街道实现了“五化”（绿化、净化、美化、亮化、硬底化），使梅州城市功能变得更加完善，交通更加便利，环境更加和谐，空气更加清新，就业更加容易，创业更加适宜，塑造了一个“山水城相依，人与自然和谐统一”的旅游城市形象。</FONT> 目前，全市有国家4A级旅游景区2个，省级旅游度假区2个，省级风景名胜区2个，省级自然保护区4个，国家级文物保护单位1个，省级文物保护单位24个，正在申报3A级景区有2个。其中，雁南飞茶田度假村、五华汤湖热矿泥山庄、五指石、长潭、泮坑被列为广东100家假日休闲好去处的景区，叶帅故居、龙鲸河漂流与神光山被列为广东100家观光新亮点的景点。</FONT> </DIV> </FONT> </DIV> <P> <FONT face=宋体> 梅州历史悠久，秦汉时期属南海郡。北宋年间改为梅州，清代称为嘉应州，民国初年废州改称梅县。1988年由成立梅州市。梅州山清水秀，古迹众多，民风独特。游览梅州，除了瞻仰叶剑英、黄遵宪、丘逢甲等客家名人的故居，参观古老的客家围屋，品尝正宗的客家美食，还不妨学一学被称为“古汉语活化石”的客家方言，感受客家人尊师重教的传统文化，这样，梅州之行会更加有意义。</FONT>
