Solomon<MH8010> offered<MH5927> a thousand<MH505> burnt<MH5930a> offerings<MH5930a> on that altar<MH4196>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/3-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>In Gibeon<MH1391> the LORD<MH3068> appeared<MH7200> to Solomon<MH8010> in a dream<MH2472> at night<MH3915>; and God<MH430> said<MH559>, “Ask<MH7592> what<MH4100> <i>you wish</i> Me to give<MH5414> you.” <p class="hdg">Solomon’s Prayer</p><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/3-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>Then Solomon<MH8010> said<MH559>, “You have shown<MH6213a> great<MH1419> faithfulness<MH2617a> to Your servant<MH5650> David<MH1732> my father<MH1>, according<MH3512c> as<MH3512c> he walked<MH1980> before<MH6440> You in <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[b]</a></span>truth<MH571>, righteousness<MH6666>, and uprightness<MH3483> of heart<MH3824> toward<MH5973> You; and You have <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>reserved<MH8104> for him this<MH2088> great<MH1419> faithfulness<MH2617a>, that You have given<MH5414> him a son<MH1121> to sit<MH3427> on his throne<MH3678>, as <i>it is</i> this<MH2088> day<MH3117>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/3-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>And now<MH6258>, LORD<MH3068> my God<MH430>, You have made<MH4427a> Your servant<MH5650> king<MH4427a> in<MH8478> place<MH8478> of<MH8478> my father<MH1> David<MH1732>, yet I am <i>like</i> a little<MH6996b> boy<MH5288>; I do not know<MH3045> how to <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>go<MH3318> out<MH3318> or come<MH935> in<MH935>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/3-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>And Your servant<MH5650> is in the midst<MH8432> of Your people<MH5971a> whom<MH834> You have chosen<MH977>, a great<MH7227a> people<MH5971a> who<MH834> are too<MH4480> many<MH7230> to be numbered<MH4487> or counted<MH5608>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/3-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>So give<MH5414> Your servant<MH5650> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>an understanding<MH8085> heart<MH3820> to judge<MH8199> Your people<MH5971a>, to discern<MH995> between<MH996> good<MH2896b> and evil<MH7451b>. For who<MH4310> is<MH3201> capable<MH3201> of judging<MH8199> this<MH2088> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>great<MH3515> people<MH5971a> of Yours?” <p class="hdg">God’s Answer</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/3-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>Now <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>it was pleasing<MH3190> in the sight<MH5869> of the Lord<MH136> that Solomon<MH8010> had asked<MH7592> this<MH2088> thing<MH1697>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/3-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>And God<MH430> said<MH559> to him, “Because<MH3282, 834> you have asked<MH7592> this<MH2088> thing<MH1697>, and have not asked<MH7592> for yourself <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>a long<MH7227a> life<MH3117>, nor<MH3808> have asked<MH7592> riches<MH6239> for yourself, nor<MH3808> have you asked<MH7592> for the lives<MH5315> of your enemies<MH340>, but have asked<MH7592> for yourself discernment<MH995> to understand<MH8085> justice<MH4941>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/3-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>behold<MH2009>, I have done<MH6213a> according to your words<MH1697>. Behold<MH2009>, I have given<MH5414> you a wise<MH2450> and discerning<MH995> heart<MH3820>, so<MH834> that<MH834> there has been<MH1961> no<MH3808> one like<MH3644> you before<MH6440> you, nor<MH3808> shall one like<MH3644> you arise<MH6965> after<MH310> you. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/3-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>I have also<MH1571> given<MH5414> you what<MH834> you have not asked<MH7592>, both<MH1571> riches<MH6239> and honor<MH3519b>, so<MH834> that<MH834> there will not be any<MH376> among the kings<MH4428> like<MH3644> you all<MH3605> your days<MH3117>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/3-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>And if<MH518> you walk<MH1980> in My ways<MH1870>, keeping<MH8104> My statutes<MH2706> and commandments<MH4687>, as your father<MH1> David<MH1732> walked<MH1980>, then I will prolong<MH748> your days<MH3117>.” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/3-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>Then Solomon<MH8010> awoke<MH3364>, and behold<MH2009>, it was a dream<MH2472>. And he came<MH935> to Jerusalem<MH3389> and stood<MH5975> before<MH6440> the ark<MH727> of the covenant<MH1285> of the Lord<MH136>, and offered<MH5927> burnt<MH5930a> offerings<MH5930a> and made<MH6213a> peace<MH8002> offerings<MH8002>, and held<MH6213a> a feast<MH4960> for all<MH3605> his servants<MH5650>. <p class="hdg">Solomon Wisely Judges</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/3-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>Then<MH227> two<MH8147> women<MH802> who were prostitutes<MH2181> came<MH935> to the king<MH4428> and stood<MH5975> before<MH6440> him. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/3-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>The one<MH259> woman<MH802> said<MH559>, “Pardon<MH994a> me, my lord<MH113>: <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>this<MH2088> woman<MH802> and I live<MH3427> in the same<MH259> house<MH1004>; and I gave<MH3205> birth<MH3205> to<MH3205> a<MH3205> child<MH3205> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>while<MH5973> she was in the house<MH1004>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/3-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>And it happened<MH1961> on the third<MH7992> day<MH3117> after I gave<MH3205> birth<MH3205>, that this<MH2088> woman<MH802> also<MH1571> gave<MH3205> birth<MH3205> to<MH3205> a<MH3205> child<MH3205>, and we were together<MH3164a>. There<MH369> was<MH369> no<MH369> stranger<MH2114a> with us in the house<MH1004>, only<MH2108> the two<MH8147> of us in the house<MH1004>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/3-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>Then this<MH2088> woman’s<MH802> son<MH1121> died<MH4191> in the night<MH3915>, because<MH834> she lay<MH7901> on him. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/3-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>So she got<MH6965> up<MH6965> in the middle<MH8432> of the night<MH3915> and took<MH3947> my son<MH1121> from beside<MH681a> me while your servant<MH519> was asleep<MH3463>, and she laid<MH7901> him at her breast<MH2436>, and laid<MH7901> her dead<MH4191> son<MH1121> at my breast<MH2436>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/3-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>When I got<MH6965> up<MH6965> in the morning<MH1242> to nurse<MH3243> my son<MH1121>, behold<MH2009>, he was dead<MH4191>! But when I examined<MH995> him closely<MH995> in the morning<MH1242>, behold<MH2009>, he was not my son<MH1121>, whom<MH834> I had borne<MH3205>!” <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/3-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>Then the other<MH312> woman<MH802> said<MH559>, “No<MH3808>! For the living<MH2416a> one<MH2416a> is my son<MH1121>, and the dead<MH4191> one is your son<MH1121>.” But <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>the first<MH2088> woman<MH2088> said<MH559>, “No<MH3808>! For the dead<MH4191> one is your son<MH1121>, and the living<MH2416a> one<MH2416a> is my son<MH1121>.” So they spoke<MH1696> before<MH6440> the king<MH4428>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/3-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>Then the king<MH4428> said<MH559>, “<span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[l]</a></span>The one<MH2088> says<MH559>, ‘This<MH2088> is my son<MH1121> who is living<MH2416a>, and your son<MH1121> is the dead<MH4191> one’; and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[m]</a></span>the other<MH2088> says<MH559>, ‘No<MH3808>! For your son<MH1121> is the dead<MH4191> one, and my son<MH1121> is the living<MH2416a> one<MH2416a>.’” <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/3-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>And the king<MH4428> said<MH559>, “Get<MH3947> me a sword<MH2719>.” So they brought<MH935> a sword<MH2719> before<MH6440> the king<MH4428>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/3-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>And the king<MH4428> said<MH559>, “Cut<MH1504> the living<MH2416a> child<MH3206> in two<MH8147>, and give<MH5414> half<MH2677> to the one<MH259> and half<MH2677> to the other<MH259>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/3-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>But the woman<MH802> whose<MH834> child<MH1121> <i>was</i> the living<MH2416a> one<MH2416a> spoke<MH559> to the king<MH4428>, for <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[n]</a></span>she was deeply<MH7356> stirred<MH3648> over<MH5921> her son<MH1121>, and she said<MH559>, “Pardon<MH994a> me, my lord<MH113>! Give<MH5414> her the living<MH2416a> child<MH3205>, and by<MH4191> no<MH408> means<MH4191> kill<MH4191> him!” But the other<MH2088> <i>woman</i> was saying<MH559>, “He shall be neither<MH1571, 3808> mine nor<MH3808> yours; cut<MH1504> <i>him!</i>” <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/3-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span>Then the king<MH4428> replied<MH6030a, 559>, “Give<MH5414> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[o]</a></span>the first woman the living<MH2416a> child<MH3205>, and by<MH4191> no<MH3808> means<MH4191> kill<MH4191> him.
