American networks chose not to show the graphic footage of what is believed to be captured U.S. soldiers, many people searched for it on the Internet. The unedited video was shown last on Al-Jazeera, the Gulf satellite news channel dubbed the CNN of the Arab World. Here we highlight prominent news sites, such as the "Baghdad Blogger," a personal diary chronicling life during war, and update you on the status of Al-Jazeera.net, so you can broaden your own perspective on the war.</p><p>- Al-Jazeera; www.aljazeera.net and the English version, http://english.aljazeera.net</p><p>Al-Jazeera Satellite Channel went live in 1996 and broadcasts from Qatar, a Gulf emirate close to Iraq. The station attracted American attention when it showed unedited video of Osama bin Laden threatening the U.S. shortly after the Sept. 11 attacks, and again last week when it aired a bloody video of U.S. soldiers purportedly captured by Iraqi forces. The 24-hour Arabic news channel is both criticized for its raw portrayal of world events and an anti-American slant and applauded for providing a contrasting voice on foreign affairs. Regardless of your opinion, it is definitely becoming part of the U.S. media landscape.</p><p>Last Monday, Al-Jazeera launched an English version site, but since Tuesday this has been under attack by hackers. On Thursday a group calling itself the "freedom cyberforce militia" hijacked the site and posted an American flag in the shape of the country. At press time, the site was still inaccessible. E-mails from the Daily News to Al-Jazeera's Web hosting company were not answered. The Arabic version of the Web site was also experiencing outages at press time. The FBI is investigating the Thursday hacking incident.</p><p>However, once the site is live again, you can translate the Arabic text by downloading a utility at www.LogoMedia.com. The author is a man who goes by the name Salam Pax, an alias combining the Arabic and Latin words for peace, and his site is garnering worldwide attention.</p><p>Here is an excerpt from March 22: "Half an hour ago the oil-filled trenches were put on fire. First watching Al-Jazeera they said that these were the places that got hit by bombs from an air raid a few minutes earlier but when I went up to the roof to take a look I saw that there were too many of them, we heard only three explosions. I took pictures of the nearest. My cousin came and told me he saw police cars standing by one and setting it on fire. And, in the blogging community there is some speculation about whether the site is a hoax. Is the "Baghdad Blogger" real? Probably, says Paul Boutin, himself a blogger who writes for Slate and Wired magazines.</p><p>He checked the companies that host the Raed page and wrote a detailed report about it on March 20 at http://paulboutin.weblogger.com/2003/03/21. It's a must-read, as is Boutin's entire blog. On Wednesday, he linked to a story he wrote that outlines how to set up your Internet browser so you can watch Iraqi TV on the Web. And, while the world waits to hear from Salam Pax, you can log on to Iraq Diaries at http://electroniciraq.net/news/iraqdiaries.shtml for detailed missives from peace activists who are working in and around Baghdad.</p><p>- Abu Dhabi TV; http://www.theemiratesnetwork.com/dir/</p><p>News_and_Media/TV/</p><p>While MSNBC reported early Wednesday that Iraqi TV transmitters were hit by a cruise missile and knocked off the air, the station showed live footage of Baghdad with a logo banner crediting Abu Dhabi TV. ADTV video is carried by CNN, Reuters and other major stations. Arab press interviews say the main reason for ADTV's edge over its international and regional competitors is the strategic location of its bureau: central Baghdad.</p><p>The site is in Arabic, but you can translate it. "America invades Iraq, Playboy Invades Lebanon" is a story about why Lebanon officials are allowing the sale of the racy men's magazine. A leading Lebanon official said: "There should be a distinction between the sex arousing and porn magazines, which are banned from entering Lebanon. Playboy is neither immoral, nor pornographic, as some people believe. There are some good and exciting topics which such magazines address."</p><p>Also, an unconfirmed article about Vice President Richard Cheney says he is planning to visit Jordan to talk his lesbian daughter, rumored to be staying there, out of becoming politically involved in the war. The story goes on to say that his former company, Halliburton, is getting a sweet deal as it will be engaged to rebuild Iraqi infrastructures after the war if the U.S. is victorious.</p><p>- Google News; news.google.com</p><p>This is the journalistic equivalent of a drone. It's an aggregate of 4,500 news sites, big and small, foreign and domestic, that are organized by topics such as technology or world news. It is updated every 10 minutes. But it's run by software, not human editors with a point of view. The result is a range of sources you may never have found without digging around in obscure network domains. For instance, you can get The Gulf Daily News: The Voice of Bahrain, where the banner logo is "Arabs Unite," not "Target: Iraq;" or the Gay Financial Network's take on the war: "Futures Subdued as War
