And many, hearing <i>Him</i>, were astonished, saying, "Whence <i>hath</i> this Man these things?" And, "What is the wisdom which is given to This Man?" And, "Such mighty works <i>are</i> wrought by His hands!" <A name="4"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/6-3.htm"><b>3</b></a></span>"Is not This the Carpenter, the Son of Mary, and brother of James, and Joses, and Judas, and Simon? and are not His sisters here with us?" And they were finding occasion of stumbling in Him. <A name="5"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/6-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>And Jesus said to them, <FR>"A prophet is not without honor, except in his own country, and among his own kindred, and in his own house."<Fr> <A name="6"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/6-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>And He could there do no mighty work, except that, laying His hands on a few sick people, He healed them. <A name="7"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/6-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>And He marvelled because of their unbelief. And He was going round about the villages, teaching.<p> <A name="8"></a><p class="hdg">The Ministry of the Twelve<br /><span class="cross">(<a href ="../matthew/10.htm#5">Matthew 10:5&#8211;15</a>; <a href ="../luke/9.htm">Luke 9:1&#8211;6</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/6-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>And He calleth to Him the twelve, and began to send them forth by two and two, and was giving them authority over the unclean spirits; <A name="9"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/6-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>and He charged them that they should take nothing for <i>the</i> way, except a staff only; no bread, no wallet, no money in their girdle; <A name="10"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/6-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>but <i>to go</i> shod with sandals; and <i>He said</i>, put not on two coats. <A name="11"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/6-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>And He said to them, <FR>"Wheresoever ye enter into a house, there abide, till ye depart thence.<Fr> <A name="12"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/6-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span><FR>And whatsoever place does not receive you, and they hear you not, going forth thence, shake off the dust under your feet for a testimony to them."<Fr> <A name="13"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/6-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>And, going forth, they preached that <i>men</i> should repent. <A name="14"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/6-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>And they were casting out many demons, and were anointing with oil many sick <i>people</i>, and were healing them.<p> <A name="15"></a><p class="hdg">The Beheading of John<br /><span class="cross">(<a href ="../matthew/14.htm">Matthew 14:1&#8211;12</a>; <a href ="../luke/9.htm#7">Luke 9:7&#8211;9</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/6-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>And the king Herod heard <i>of Him</i>, (for His name became famous), and he said, "John the Immerser has risen from the dead; and, because of this, the powers are working in Him." <A name="16"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/6-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>But others said, "<i>It is</i> Elijah." And others said, "<i>It is</i> a prophet, <i>or</i> as one of the prophets." <A name="17"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/6-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>But Herod, hearing of <i>Him</i>, said, "<i>It is he</i> whom I beheaded, John, the same was raised."<p> <A name="18"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/6-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>For Herod himself, sending forth, laid hold upon John, and bound him in prison, for the sake of Herodias the wife of Philip, his brother, because he married her. <A name="19"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/6-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>For John said to Herod, "It is not lawful for you to have your brother's wife." <A name="20"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/6-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>And Herodias was holding <i>it</i> against him, and was wishing to kill him; and she could not; <A name="21"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/6-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>for Herod was fearing John, knowing that he was a righteous and holy man, and he was preserving him. <A name="22"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/6-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>And, an opportune day having come, when Herod, on his birthday, made a supper for his nobles and for the chief captains, and the chief men of Galilee; <A name="23"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/6-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>and the daughter of Herodias herself coming in and dancing, it pleased Herod and those reclining at table with him; and the king said to the damsel, "Ask of me whatsoever you wish, and I will give it to you." <A name="24"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/6-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>And he swore to her, "Whatsoever you ask of me, I will give it to you, unto half of my kingdom." <A name="25"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/6-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>And, having gone out, she said to her mother, "What shall I ask?" And she said, "The head of John the Immerser." <A name="26"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/6-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>And, coming in straight-way, in haste, to the king, she asked, saying, "I wish that you would, forthwith, give me on a dish, the head of John the Immerser." <A name="27"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/6-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>And, though becoming very sorrowful, the king, because of his oaths, and those reclining <i>with him</i>, would not thwart her. <A name="28"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/6-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span>And the king, straightway sending off one of his guard, gave orders to bring his head; and, departing, he beheaded him in the prison, <A name="29"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/6-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span>and brought his head on a dish, and gave it to the damsel, and the damsel gave it to her mother. <A name="30"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/6-29.htm"><b>29</b></a></span>And, having heard of it, his disciples came and took up his corpse, and placed it in a tomb.<p> <A name="31"></a><p class="hdg">The Feeding of the Five Thousand<br /><span class="cross">(<a href ="../matthew/14.htm#13">Matthew 14:13&#8211;21</a>; <a href ="../luke/9.htm#10">Luke 9:10&#8211;17</a>; <a href ="../john/6.htm">John 6:1&#8211;15</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/6-30.htm"><b>30</b></a></span>And the apostles gather themselves together to Jesus; and they reported to Him all things, whatsoever they did, and whatsoever they taught. <A name="32"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/6-31.htm"><b>31</b></a></span>And He saith to them, <FR>"Come ye yourselves apart into a desert place, and rest yourselves a little."<Fr> For there were many coming and going, and they were not finding opportunity even to eat. <A name="33"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/6-32.htm"><b>32</b></a></span>And they went away in the boat to a desert place apart.<p> <A name="34"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/6-33.htm"><b>33</b></a></span>And <i>the people</i> saw them going on their way, and many knew <i>them</i>, and they ran together there on foot from all the cities, and outwent them. <A name="35"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/6-34.htm"><b>34</b></a></span>And, coming forth, He saw a great multitude, and was moved with compassion toward them, because they were as sheep not having a shepherd; and He began to teach them many things. <A name="36"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/6-35.htm"><b>35</b></a></span>And, the hour being already late, His disciples, coming to Him, said, "The place is desert, and the hour is already late; <A name="37"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/6-36.htm"><b>36</b></a></span>send them away, that, having gone into the surrounding fields and villages, they may buy themselves something to eat." <A name="38"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/6-37.htm"><b>37</b></a></span>But He saith to them, <FR>"Give ye them to eat."<Fr> And they said to Him, "Going, shall we buy two hundred denaries worth of loaves, and give them to eat?" <A name="39"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/6-38.htm"><b>38</b></a></span>But He saith to them, <FR>"How many loaves have ye? go <i>and</i> see."<Fr> And, having ascertained, they say, "Five, and two fishes." <A name="40"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/6-39.htm"><b>39</b></a></span>And He commanded that all should recline by companies on the grass. <A name="41"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/6-40.htm"><b>40</b></a></span>And they sat down in ranks, by hundreds, and fifties. <A name="42"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/6-41.htm"><b>41</b></a></span>And, taking the five loaves and two fishes, looking up to Heaven, He blessed, and broke up the loaves, and kept giving to the disciples to set before them; and He divided the two fishes among them all. <A name="43"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/6-42.htm"><b>42</b></a></span>And they all ate, and were satisfied. <A name="44"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/6-43.htm"><b>43</b></a></span>And they took up broken pieces, twelve basketfuls, and from the fishes. <A name="45"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/6-44.htm"><b>44</b></a></span>And those who ate the loaves were five thousand men.<p> <A name="46"></a><p class="hdg">Jesus Walks on Water<br /><span class="cross">(<a href ="../matthew/14.htm#22">Matthew 14:22&#8211;33</a>; <a href ="../john/6.htm#16">John 6:16&#8211;21</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/6-45.htm"><b>45</b></a></span>And straightway He constrained His disciples to enter into the boat, and to go before to the other side, to Bethsaida, while He Himself sendeth the multitude away. <A name="47"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/6-46.htm"><b>46</b></a></span>And, having taken leave of them, He went away into the mountain to pray.<p> <A name="48"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/6-47.htm"><b>47</b></a></span>And, when it was evening, the boat was in the midst of the sea, and He was alone on the land. <A name="49"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/6-48.htm"><b>48</b></a></span>And, seeing them distressed in rowing, for the wind was contrary to them, about the fourth watch of the night He cometh to them, walking on the sea; and He wished to pass by them; <A name="50"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/6-49.htm"><b>49</b></a></span>but, seeing Him walking on the sea, they supposed that it was a ghost, and they cried out; <A name="51"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/6-50.htm"><b>50</b></a></span>for they all saw Him; and were troubled.
