He did not do<MH6213a> what was right<MH3477> in the sight<MH5869> of the LORD<MH3068> as his father<MH1> David<MH1732> <i>had done.</i> <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_chronicles/28-2.htm"><b>2</b></a></span>But he walked<MH1980> in the ways<MH1870> of the kings<MH4428> of Israel<MH3478>; he also<MH1571> made<MH6213a> cast<MH4541a> metal<MH4541a> images<MH4541a> for the Baals<MH1168a>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_chronicles/28-3.htm"><b>3</b></a></span>Furthermore, he burned<MH6999> incense<MH6999> in the Valley<MH1516> of Ben-hinnom<MH1121, 2011>, and burned<MH1197a> his sons<MH1121> in fire<MH784>, according to the abominations<MH8441> of the nations<MH1471> whom<MH834> the LORD<MH3068> had driven<MH3423> out<MH3423> from the sons<MH1121> of Israel<MH3478>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_chronicles/28-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>He sacrificed<MH2076> and burned<MH6999> incense<MH6999> on the high<MH1116> places<MH1116>, on the hills<MH1389>, and under<MH8478> every<MH3605> green<MH7488> tree<MH6086>. <p class="hdg">Judah Is Invaded</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/2_chronicles/28-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>Therefore the LORD<MH3068> his God<MH430> handed<MH5414, 3027> him over<MH5414> to the king<MH4428> of Aram<MH758>; and they <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[a]</a></span>defeated<MH5221> him and carried<MH7617> from him a great<MH1419> number of captives<MH7633>, and brought<MH935> <i>them</i> to Damascus<MH1834>. And he was also<MH1571> handed<MH5414, 3027> over<MH5414> to the king<MH4428> of Israel<MH3478>, who struck<MH5221> him with heavy<MH1419> casualties<MH4347>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_chronicles/28-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>For Pekah<MH6492> the son<MH1121> of Remaliah<MH7425> killed<MH2026> 120,000<MH3967, 6242, 505> in Judah<MH3063> in one<MH259> day<MH3117>, all<MH3605> valiant<MH2428> men<MH1121>, because they had abandoned<MH5800a> the LORD<MH3068> God<MH430> of their fathers<MH1>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_chronicles/28-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>And Zichri<MH2147>, a mighty<MH1368> man<MH1368> of Ephraim<MH669>, killed<MH2026> Maaseiah<MH4641> the king&#8217;s<MH4428> son<MH1121>, Azrikam<MH5840> the ruler<MH5057> of the house<MH1004>, and Elkanah<MH511> the second<MH4932> to the king<MH4428>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/2_chronicles/28-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>The sons<MH1121> of Israel<MH3478> led<MH7617> away<MH7617> captive<MH7617> two<MH3967> hundred<MH3967> thousand<MH505> of their relatives<MH251>, women<MH802>, sons<MH1121>, and daughters<MH1323>; and they also<MH1571> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[b]</a></span>took<MH962> a great<MH7227a> deal<MH7227a> of spoils<MH7998> from them, and brought<MH935> the spoils<MH7998> to Samaria<MH8111>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_chronicles/28-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>But a prophet<MH5030> of the LORD<MH3068> was there<MH8033>, whose name<MH8034> <i>was</i> Oded<MH5752>; and he went<MH3318> out<MH3318> to meet<MH6440> the army<MH6635> which came<MH935> to Samaria<MH8111> and said<MH559> to them, &#8220;Behold<MH2009>, because the LORD<MH3068>, the God<MH430> of your fathers<MH1>, was angry<MH2534> with Judah<MH3063>, He has handed<MH5414, 3027> them over<MH5414> to you, and you have killed<MH2026> them in a rage<MH2197> <i>which</i> has even<MH5704> reached<MH5060> heaven<MH8064>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_chronicles/28-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>Now<MH6258> you are proposing<MH559> to subjugate<MH3533> the people<MH1121> of Judah<MH3063> and Jerusalem<MH3389> as male<MH5650> and female<MH8198> slaves<MH8198, 5650> for yourselves. <i>Are</i> you not, however<MH7534b> guilty<MH5973, 819> yourselves<MH864b> of offenses<MH819> against the LORD<MH3068> your God<MH430>? <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_chronicles/28-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>Now<MH6258> then, listen<MH8085> to me and return<MH7725> the captives<MH7633> whom<MH834> you captured<MH7617> from your brothers<MH251>, for the burning<MH2740> anger<MH639> of the LORD<MH3068> is against<MH5921> you.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_chronicles/28-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>Then some<MH376> of the leading<MH7218> men<MH376> of the sons<MH1121> of Ephraim<MH669>&#8212;Azariah<MH5838> the son<MH1121> of Johanan<MH3076>, Berechiah<MH1296> the son<MH1121> of Meshillemoth<MH4919>, Jehizkiah<MH3169> the son<MH1121> of Shallum<MH7967>, and Amasa<MH6021> the son<MH1121> of Hadlai<MH2311>&#8212;rose<MH6965> up<MH6965> against<MH5921> those who were coming<MH935> from the battle<MH6635>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_chronicles/28-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>and said<MH559> to them, &#8220;You must not bring<MH935> the captives<MH7633> in<MH935> here<MH2008>, for you are proposing<MH559> <i>to bring</i> guilt<MH819> upon us before the LORD<MH3068>, adding<MH3254> to our sins<MH2403b> and our guilt<MH819>; for our guilt<MH819> is great<MH7227a>, and <i>His</i> burning<MH2740> anger<MH639> is against<MH5921> Israel<MH3478>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_chronicles/28-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>So the armed<MH2502b> men<MH2502b> left<MH5800a> the captives<MH7633> and the spoils<MH957> before<MH6440> the officers<MH8269> and all<MH3605> the assembly<MH6951>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_chronicles/28-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>Then the men<MH376> who<MH834> were designated<MH5344a> by name<MH8034> got<MH6965> up<MH6965>, took<MH2388> the captives<MH7633>, and they clothed<MH3847> all<MH3605> their naked<MH4636> people<MH4636> from the spoils<MH7998>; they gave<MH3847> them clothes<MH3847> and sandals<MH5274b>, fed<MH398> them and gave<MH8248> them drink<MH8248>, anointed<MH5480a> them <i>with oil,</i> led<MH5095> all<MH3605> their feeble<MH3782> ones on donkeys<MH2543>, and brought<MH935> them to Jericho<MH3405>, the city<MH5892b> of palm<MH8558> trees<MH8558>, to their brothers<MH251>; then they returned<MH7725> to Samaria<MH8111>. <p class="hdg">Compromise with Assyria</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/2_chronicles/28-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>At that time<MH6256> King<MH4428> Ahaz<MH271> sent<MH7971> <i>word</i> to the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>kings<MH4428> of Assyria<MH804b> for help<MH5826>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_chronicles/28-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>For the Edomites<MH130> had come<MH935> again<MH5750> and attacked<MH5221> Judah<MH3063>, and led<MH7617> away<MH7617> captives<MH7628b>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_chronicles/28-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>The Philistines<MH6430> had also invaded<MH6584> the cities<MH5892b> of the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>lowland<MH8219> and of the Negev<MH5045> of Judah<MH3063>, and had taken<MH3920> Beth-shemesh<MH1053>, Aijalon<MH357>, Gederoth<MH1450>, and Soco<MH7755> with its villages<MH1323>, Timnah<MH8553> with its villages<MH1323>, and Gimzo<MH1579> with its villages<MH1323>; and they had settled<MH3427> there<MH8033>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_chronicles/28-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>For the LORD<MH3068> had humbled<MH3665> Judah<MH3063> because<MH5668> of Ahaz<MH271> king<MH4428> of Israel<MH3478>, for he had brought<MH6544a> about<MH6544a> a lack<MH6544a> of<MH6544a> restraint<MH6544a> in Judah<MH3063> and was very<MH4604> unfaithful<MH4604> to the LORD<MH3068>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_chronicles/28-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>So Tilgath-pilneser<MH8407> king<MH4428> of Assyria<MH804b> came<MH935> against<MH5921> him and afflicted<MH6887a> him instead<MH3808> of strengthening<MH2388> him. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_chronicles/28-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>Although<MH3588> Ahaz<MH271> took<MH2505a> a<MH2505a> portion<MH2505a> out<MH2505a> of the house<MH1004> of the LORD<MH3068> and out of the palace<MH1004> of the king<MH4428> and of the princes<MH8269>, and gave<MH5414> <i>it</i> to the king<MH4428> of Assyria<MH804b>, it did not help<MH5833> him. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/2_chronicles/28-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>Now during the time<MH6256> of his distress<MH6887a>, this<MH1931> same<MH1931> King<MH4428> Ahaz<MH271> became<MH4603> even<MH3254> more<MH3254> unfaithful<MH4603> to the LORD<MH3068>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_chronicles/28-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>For he sacrificed<MH2076> to the gods<MH430> of Damascus<MH1834> who had <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>defeated<MH5221> him, and said<MH559>, &#8220;Because<MH3588> the gods<MH430> of the kings<MH4428> of Aram<MH758> helped<MH5826> them, I will sacrifice<MH2076> to them so that they may help<MH5826> me.&#8221; But they became<MH1961> the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>downfall<MH3782> of him and all<MH3605> Israel<MH3478>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_chronicles/28-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>Moreover, when Ahaz<MH271> gathered<MH622> together the utensils<MH3627> of the house<MH1004> of God<MH430>, he cut<MH7112> the utensils<MH3627> of the house<MH1004> of God<MH430> in<MH7112> pieces<MH7112>; and he closed<MH5462> the doors<MH1817> of the house<MH1004> of the LORD<MH3068>, and made<MH6213a> altars<MH4196> for himself in every<MH3605> corner<MH6438> of Jerusalem<MH3389>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_chronicles/28-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>In every<MH3605> city<MH5892b> of Judah<MH3063> he made<MH6213a> high<MH1116> places<MH1116> to burn<MH6999> incense<MH6999> to other<MH312> gods<MH430>, and provoked<MH3707> the LORD<MH3068>, the God<MH430> of his fathers<MH1>, to<MH3707> anger<MH3707>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_chronicles/28-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>Now the rest<MH3499a> of his acts<MH1697> and all<MH3605> his ways<MH1870>, from the first<MH7223> to the last<MH314>, behold<MH2009>, they are written<MH3789> in the Book<MH5612> of the Kings<MH4428> of Judah<MH3063> and Israel<MH3478>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_chronicles/28-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span>So Ahaz<MH271> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>lay<MH7901> down<MH7901> with his fathers<MH1>, and they buried<MH6912> him in the city<MH5892b>, in Jerusalem<MH3389>, for they did not bring<MH935> him to the tombs<MH6913> of the kings<MH4428> of Israel<MH3478>;
