and the people wondered. <A name="16"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/11-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>But some of them said, He casteth out demons by Beelzebub the prince of demons: <A name="17"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/11-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>and others, to try Him, desired of Him a sign from heaven. <A name="18"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/11-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>But He who <i>well</i> knew their thoughts, said unto them, <FR>Every kingdom divided against itself becomes desolate, and a house against a house falleth: if Satan also be divided against himself,<Fr> <A name="19"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/11-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span><FR>how shall his kingdom stand? because ye say, that I cast out demons by Beelzebub.<Fr> <A name="20"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/11-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span><FR>And if I by Beelzebub cast out demons, by whom do your <Fr><i>own</i><FR> people cast <Fr><i>them</i><FR> out? wherefore they shall be your judges.<Fr> <A name="21"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/11-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span><FR>But if I cast out demons by the power of God, you may be sure the kingdom of God is come unto you:<Fr> <A name="22"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/11-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span><i>for</i><FR> when a strong <Fr><i>man</i><FR> well-armed defends his palace, his substance is secure:<Fr> <A name="23"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/11-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span><FR>but when a stronger than he cometh upon <Fr><i>him</i><FR> and conquers him, he taketh away his armour, wherein he trusted, and divideth his spoils.<Fr> <A name="24"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/11-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span><FR>He, that is not with me, is against me; and he, that gathereth not with me, scattereth.<Fr><p> <A name="25"></a><p class="hdg">An Unclean Spirit Returns<br /><span class="cross">(<a href ="../matthew/12.htm#43">Matthew 12:43&#8211;45</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/11-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span><FR>When an impure spirit is gone out of a man, he wanders through dry <Fr><i>desert</i><FR> places, seeking rest: and finding none he saith, I will return into my house, that I came out of;<Fr> <A name="26"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/11-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span><FR>and when he cometh he findeth it swept and set in order.<Fr> <A name="27"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/11-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span><FR>Then he goeth and taketh with <Fr><i>him</i><FR> seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter in and dwell there: and <Fr><i>so</i><FR> the last state of that man is worse than the first.<Fr><p> <A name="28"></a><p class="hdg">True Blessedness<p><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/11-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span>As He was speaking these <i>things,</i> a certain woman lifted up her voice from <i>amidst</i> the croud, and said, Happy <i>is</i> the womb that bare thee, and the breasts which thou didst suck! <A name="29"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/11-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span>but He replied, <FR>Yea rather happy <Fr><i>are</i><FR> they, that hear the word of God and keep it.<Fr><p> <A name="30"></a><p class="hdg">The Sign of Jonah<br /><span class="cross">(<a href ="../matthew/12.htm#38">Matthew 12:38&#8211;42</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/11-29.htm"><b>29</b></a></span>And when the multitudes were gathering thick together He began to say, <FR>This is a wicked generation: they demand a sign, but no sign shall be given them, except that of the prophet Jonah:<Fr> <A name="31"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/11-30.htm"><b>30</b></a></span><FR>for as Jonah was a sign to the Ninevites, so shall also the Son of man be to this generation.<Fr> <A name="32"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/11-31.htm"><b>31</b></a></span><FR>The queen of the south shall rise up in the <Fr><i>day of</i><FR> judgement against the men of this generation and condemn them: for she came from the remote parts of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and behold a greater than Solomon <Fr><i>is</i><FR> here.<Fr> <A name="33"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/11-32.htm"><b>32</b></a></span><i>And</i><FR> the men of Nineveh shall rise up in the judgement against this generation, and condemn it; for they repented upon the preaching of Jonas, and behold a greater than Jonas <Fr><i>is</i><FR> here.<Fr><p> <A name="34"></a><p class="hdg">The Lamp of the Body<br /><span class="cross">(<a href ="../matthew/6.htm#22">Matthew 6:22&#8211;24</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/11-33.htm"><b>33</b></a></span><FR>But <Fr><i>yet</i><FR> no one having lighted a candle putteth it into a secret place, nor under a bushel, but on a candlestick, that they who come in may see the light.<Fr> <A name="35"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/11-34.htm"><b>34</b></a></span><FR>The eye is the candle of the body: therefore when thine eye is clear, thy whole body also is light; but when <Fr><i>it</i><FR> is bad, thy body also is dark.<Fr> <A name="36"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/11-35.htm"><b>35</b></a></span><FR>Take heed therefore least the light which is in thee be darkness.<Fr> <A name="37"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/11-36.htm"><b>36</b></a></span><FR>For if thy whole body <Fr><i>be</i><FR> light, having no part dark, it will be (<Fr><i>when</i><FR> all enlightened) as when a candle giveth thee light by <Fr><i>its</i><FR> brightness.<Fr><p> <A name="38"></a><p class="hdg">Woes to Pharisees and Experts in the Law<br /><span class="cross">(<a href ="../matthew/23.htm">Matthew 23:1&#8211;36</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/11-37.htm"><b>37</b></a></span>And as He spake, a certain pharisee asked Him to dine with him: and He went in and sat down <i>at table.</i> <A name="39"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/11-38.htm"><b>38</b></a></span>And when the pharisee saw <i>it</i> he wondered that He did not wash first, before dinner. <A name="40"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/11-39.htm"><b>39</b></a></span>But the Lord said unto him, <FR>ye pharisees clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but your inward part is full of rapine and wickedness.<Fr> <A name="41"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/11-40.htm"><b>40</b></a></span><FR>Senseless <Fr><i>creatures!</i><FR> Did not He who made the outside, make also that which is within? give alms rather according to your ability:<Fr> <A name="42"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/11-41.htm"><b>41</b></a></span><FR>and behold all <Fr><i>things</i><FR> are clean to you.<Fr><p> <A name="43"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/11-42.htm"><b>42</b></a></span><FR>But wo unto you pharisees, who tithe <Fr><i>even your</i><FR> mint, and rue, and all <Fr><i>your</i><FR> herbs, and pass by judgement and the love of God: these ought ye to practise and not to omit the others.<Fr> <A name="44"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/11-43.htm"><b>43</b></a></span><FR>Wo unto you pharisees; for ye love the chief seat in synagogues, and salutations in public places.<Fr> <A name="45"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/11-44.htm"><b>44</b></a></span><FR>Wo unto you scribes and pharisees, hypocrites; for ye are like graves that do not appear, and those that walk over <Fr><i>them</i><FR> are not aware <Fr><i>of them.</i><p> <A name="46"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/11-45.htm"><b>45</b></a></span>And one of the doctors of the law answered and said unto Him, Master, <i>in</i> saying these <i>things</i> thou reproachest us also. <A name="47"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/11-46.htm"><b>46</b></a></span>And He said, <FR>Wo unto you also, ye interpreters of the law, for ye load men with insupportable burthens, and ye yourselves touch not the burthens with one of your fingers.<Fr> <A name="48"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/11-47.htm"><b>47</b></a></span><FR>Wo unto you; who build the sepulchres of the prophets, and your fathers killed them.<Fr> <A name="49"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/11-48.htm"><b>48</b></a></span><FR>Thus ye testify that ye approve of the deeds of your fathers; for they put them to death, and ye build their sepulchres.<Fr> <A name="50"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/11-49.htm"><b>49</b></a></span><FR>And therefore the wisdom of God hath said, I will send them prophets and apostles, and <Fr><i>some</i><FR> of them they will kill and persecute:<Fr> <A name="51"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/11-50.htm"><b>50</b></a></span><FR>that the blood of all the prophets <Fr><i>which has been</i><FR> shed from the foundation of the world may be required of this generation, from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zachariah,<Fr> <A name="52"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/11-51.htm"><b>51</b></a></span><FR>who perished between the altar and the temple.
