They teach students at undergraduate and postgraduate level, and carry our research, the results of which they write up and publish. Some act as the Associate Editors of journals and a few as Editors-in-Chief.</p></div><div class="c-article-section__content"><p>In my case, such tasks started quite early in my career. Throughout the 1970s, I was appointed by the Royal Society of London to edit the comprehensive annual volumes of Space Research, published by Akademie Verlag and then by Pergamon Press, for COSPAR. Sometimes there was a joint Editor, such as Sidney Bowhill, Keith Runcorn or Carl Sagan. The main tasks were to ensure clarity and a good style of English for all the papers submitted from around the world, and to plan a logical sequence for the articles in the thick book which resulted. In the early 1980s, I served as general editor for COSPAR of a long multi-author chapter on the current and future state of space science in the book, The World in Space. This was published by Prentice-Hall for the United Nations, in preparation for the second UN Conference on the Exploration and Peaceful Uses of Outer Space, UNISPACE 82.</p></div><div class="c-article-section__content"><p>In the late 1980s, Professor Sir Granville Beynon asked me to take over the Editor-in-Chief position for the Journal of Atmospheric and Terrestrial Physics. Early in the 1990s, I met Robert Maxwell who emphasised the special nature of this Pergamon Press (now Elsevier) journal, which was the first of many that he started in the 1950s on moving to the UK. Having changed the name to the Journal of Atmospheric and Solar-Terrestrial Physics, I stepped down from this position early in 2000, handing over to Tim Killeen. I was also active at this time with Cambridge University Press, editing the Cambridge Encyclopedia of Space, and together with Alex Dessler and John Houghton, establishing the Cambridge Atmospheric and Space Science Series of books, as well as the Cambridge Aerospace Series of engineering books related to aircraft and spacecraft.</p></div><div class="c-article-section__content"><p>My first connection with Surveys in Geophysics came in June 1987 with the publication of a Special Issue arising from a scientific meeting which I organised on Atmospheric Studies by Optical Methods. From 1980, the Managing Editor of Geophysical Surveys, as it was then called, was Kenneth Creer, Professor of Geophysics at the University of Edinburgh. We knew each other via membership of the Royal Astronomical Society in London, which also takes geophysics under its wings.</p></div><div class="c-article-section__content"><p>In March 2000, I organised a Special Issue of Surveys in Geophysics on from Environmental risks, as problems, to Earth observations as solutions to those problems, review papers arising from an advanced course delivered at the International Space University in Strasbourg, France. With George Haskell and other colleagues, I edited a series of books arising from the annual ISU Symposium that were published by Kluwer Academic Publishers before being taken over by Springer.</p></div><div class="c-article-section__content"><p>In the spring of 2001, I replaced the quadrumvirate of Managing Editors of Surveys in Geophysics. My Editorial (Surveys in Geophysics, <b>22</b>, 139, 2001) offered authors the opportunity:</p><ol class="u-list-style-none"> <li> <span class="u-custom-list-number">(a)</span> <p>To inform their colleagues in related disciplines of recent significant work in their own disciplines, and</p> </li> <li> <span class="u-custom-list-number">(b)</span> <p>To introduce students at the graduate level to areas of study in which they may choose to build satisfying careers.</p> </li> </ol></div><div class="c-article-section__content"><p>Here, I mentioned that the geophysical sciences are both interdisciplinary and vast in range, and that observations, their interpretation, fundamental theory and numerical modelling are all very relevant. I emphasised that new diagrams would be encouraged, particularly those explaining links within the Earth system or those summarising new results.</p></div><div class="c-article-section__content"><p>At first, it was quite difficult to have enough review papers to fulfil the planned publication schedule. However, after discussions with Andre Balogh, publishing Special Issues of Surveys in Geophysics on the analyses of observations from “downward looking” satellite borne instruments for the International Space Science Institute in Bern, Switzerland, turned the situation around. The paper by Church and White in 2011, on rising sea levels, then recently at ~ 3 mm/year, has been cited more than a thousand times. Anny Cazenave and Michael Rast have been particularly active in developing this series of Special Issues. A more recent change has been the increasing number of submissions of papers by authors from the People’s Republic of China.</p></div><div class="c-article-section__content"><p>During my term of office as Editor-in-Chief, I have accepted just over 800 review papers for publication, rejected almost 800 others, and transferred nearly 500 for consideration by other Springer Nature journals; 63 papers were withdrawn. Particularly memorable during my career in this role have been the fruitful and convivial meetings of Editorial Board members, held in conjunction with the Annual General Meetings of the European Geosciences Union in Vienna, Austria, and most efficiently organised by Petra van Steenbergen. I am particularly indebted to Melinda Paul for facilitating the smooth transition of editorial tasks to the new Editor-in-Chief, Shun-ichiro Karato, Professor of Earth and Planetary Sciences at Yale University, USA.</p></div><div class="c-article-section__content"><p>In May 2009, having delivered an invited lecture at an American Geophysical Union Chapman Conference held at College Park, in Pennsylvania, I went on to give another invited lecture at the Japan Geoscience Union Meeting. Upon my arrival at Narita International Airport, I made my way to the bus stops, but I had no idea of which bus would go to the meeting venue in Chiba City, situated to the east of the centre of Tokyo. So, I asked, in English, the first person that came along—that was how I met Professor Karato. Over coffee at the JGU Meeting, we had a conversation, and I invited him to join our Editorial Board. I am delighted that he has agreed to take over this role from me.
