The mention of "sixty queens" reflects the grandeur and status of a king, likely Solomon, who is traditionally attributed as the author of this book. Solomon's extensive harem is documented in <a href="/1_kings/11-3.htm">1 Kings 11:3</a>, where it states he had 700 wives, princesses, and 300 concubines. This phrase highlights the opulence and political alliances formed through marriage, as queens were often daughters of foreign kings, strengthening diplomatic ties.<p><b>and eighty concubines</b><br>Concubines in ancient Israel were women who lived with a man but had a lower status than a wife. They were often taken for pleasure, procreation, or political reasons. The mention of "eighty concubines" further emphasizes the king's wealth and the cultural norms of the time. Concubines, while not having the same status as queens, played significant roles in the household and could bear children who might have claims to inheritance, as seen in the story of Abraham and Hagar in <a href="/genesis/16.htm">Genesis 16</a>.<p><b>and maidens without number</b><br>The phrase "maidens without number" suggests an innumerable group of young women, possibly serving in the royal court or awaiting selection as wives or concubines. This reflects the abundance and prosperity of the king's reign. In a broader biblical context, the imagery of countless maidens can symbolize the vastness of God's blessings or the multitude of believers, as seen in <a href="/revelation/7-9.htm">Revelation 7:9</a>, where a great multitude from every nation stands before the throne of God. This phrase also underscores the idea of beauty and purity, often associated with maidens in biblical literature.<div class="vheading2">Persons / Places / Events</div>1. <b><a href="/topical/q/queens.htm">Queens</a></b><br>These are the royal wives of a king, signifying status and authority within the royal household.<br><br>2. <b><a href="/topical/c/concubines.htm">Concubines</a></b><br>Women who lived with a man but had lower status than his wife or wives. Probably the latter marks a later form of the traditions of the grand scale on which everything at the court of the monarch was conducted, and this, though a poetic, is a truer version of the story of his loves. Is not that because the time referred to in the poem was early in the reign? The words are an echo of what we read in <a href="/proverbs/31-28.htm">Proverbs 31:28</a> and <a href="/genesis/30-13.htm">Genesis 30:13</a>. Perhaps the general meaning is merely to celebrate the surpassing beauty of the new bride. But there certainly is a special stress laid on her purity and innocence. There is no necessity to seek for any exact interpretation of the queens and concubines. They represent female beauty in its variety. The true Church is in closer relation to the Bridegroom than all the rest of the world. Even in the heathen and unconverted world there is a revelation of the Word, or, as the ancient Fathers of the Church said, a <span class="greek">Λόγος σπερματὶκος</span>. He was then as light, though the darkness comprehended him not. The perfection of the true bride of the Lamb will be acknowledged even by those who are not professedly Christian. <span class="p"><br /><br /></span><span class="versiontext"><a href="/commentaries/songs/6-8.htm">Parallel Commentaries ...</a></span><span class="p"><br /><br /><br /></span><a name="lexicon" id="lexicon"></a><div class="vheading">Hebrew</div><span class="word">There</span><br /><span class="heb">הֵ֙מָּה֙</span> <span class="translit">(hêm·māh)</span><br /><span class="parse">Pronoun - third person masculine plural<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_1992.htm">Strong's 1992: </a> </span><span class="str2">They</span><br /><br /><span class="word">are sixty</span><br /><span class="heb">שִׁשִּׁ֥ים</span> <span class="translit">(šiš·šîm)</span><br /><span class="parse">Number - common plural<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_8346.htm">Strong's 8346: </a> </span><span class="str2">Sixty</span><br /><br /><span class="word">queens</span><br /><span class="heb">מְּלָכ֔וֹת</span> <span class="translit">(mə·lā·ḵō·wṯ)</span><br /><span class="parse">Noun - feminine plural<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_4436.htm">Strong's 4436: </a> </span><span class="str2">Queen -- a queen</span><br /><br /><span class="word">and eighty</span><br /><span class="heb">וּשְׁמֹנִ֖ים</span> <span class="translit">(ū·šə·mō·nîm)</span><br /><span class="parse">Conjunctive waw | Number - common plural<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_8084.htm">Strong's 8084: </a> </span><span class="str2">Eighty, eightieth</span><br /><br /><span class="word">concubines,</span><br /><span class="heb">פִּֽילַגְשִׁ֑ים</span> <span class="translit">(pî·laḡ·šîm)</span><br /><span class="parse">Noun - feminine plural<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_6370.htm">Strong's 6370: </a> </span><span class="str2">A concubine, a paramour</span><br /><br /><span class="word">and maidens</span><br /><span class="heb">וַעֲלָמ֖וֹת</span> <span class="translit">(wa·‘ă·lā·mō·wṯ)</span><br /><span class="parse">Conjunctive waw | Noun - feminine plural<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_5959.htm">Strong's 5959: </a> </span><span class="str2">A young woman, a virgin</span><br /><br /><span class="word">without</span><br /><span class="heb">אֵ֥ין</span> <span class="translit">(’ên)</span><br /><span class="parse">Adverb<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_369.htm">Strong's 369: </a> </span><span class="str2">A non-entity, a negative particle</span><br /><br /><span class="word">number,</span><br /><span class="heb">מִסְפָּֽר׃</span> <span class="translit">(mis·pār)</span><br /><span class="parse">Noun - masculine singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_4557.htm">Strong's 4557: </a> </span><span class="str2">A number, definite, indefinite, narration</span><br /><span class="p"><br /><br /></span><div class="vheading">Links</div><a href="/niv/songs/6-8.htm">Song of Solomon 6:8 NIV</a><br /><a href="/nlt/songs/6-8.htm">Song of Solomon 6:8 NLT</a><br /><a href="/esv/songs/6-8.htm">Song of Solomon 6:8 ESV</a><br /><a href="/nasb/songs/6-8.htm">Song of Solomon 6:8 NASB</a><br /><a href="/kjv/songs/6-8.htm">Song of Solomon 6:8 KJV</a><span class="p"><br /><br /></span><a href="//bibleapps.com/songs/6-8.htm">Song of Solomon 6:8 BibleApps.com</a><br /><a href="//bibliaparalela.com/songs/6-8.htm">Song of Solomon 6:8 Biblia Paralela</a><br /><a href="//holybible.com.cn/songs/6-8.htm">Song of Solomon 6:8 Chinese Bible</a><br /><a href="//saintebible.com/songs/6-8.htm">Song of Solomon 6:8 French Bible</a><br /><a href="/catholic/songs/6-8.htm">Song of Solomon 6:8 Catholic Bible</a><span class="p"><br /><br /></span><a href="/songs/6-8.htm">OT Poetry: Song of Solomon 6:8 There are sixty queens eighty concubines (Song Songs SS So Can)</a></div></div></td></tr></table></div><div id="left"><a href="/songs/6-7.htm" onmouseover='lft.src="/leftgif.png"' onmouseout='lft.src="/left.png"' title="Song of Solomon 6:7"><img src="/left.png" name="lft" border="0" alt="Song of Solomon 6:7" /></a></div><div id="right"><a href="/songs/6-9.htm" onmouseover='rght.src="/rightgif.png"' onmouseout='rght.src="/right.png"' title="Song of Solomon 6:9"><img src="/right.png" name="rght" border="0" alt="Song of Solomon 6:9" /></a></div><div id="botleft"><a href="#" onmouseover='botleft.src="/botleftgif.png"' onmouseout='botleft.src="/botleft.png"' title="Top of Page"><img src="/botleft.png" name="botleft" border="0" alt="Top of Page" /></a></div><div id="botright"><a href="#" onmouseover='botright.src="/botrightgif.png"' onmouseout='botright.src="/botright.png"' title="Top of Page"><img src="/botright.png" name="botright" border="0" alt="Top of Page" /></a></div><div id="bot"><iframe width="100%" height="1500" scrolling="no" src="/botmenubhnew2.htm" frameborder="0"></iframe></div></td></tr></table></div></body></html>
