and from there<MH8033> take<MH3947> to yourself a wife<MH802> from the daughters<MH1323> of Laban<MH3837a>, your mother’s<MH517> brother<MH251>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/28-3.htm"><b>3</b></a></span>May <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[b]</a></span>God<MH410> Almighty<MH7706b> bless<MH1288> you and make<MH6509> you fruitful<MH6509> and multiply<MH7235a> you, so that you may become<MH1961> a multitude<MH6951> of peoples<MH5971a>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/28-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>May He also give<MH5414> you the blessing<MH1293> of Abraham<MH85>, to you and to your <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>descendants<MH2233> with you, so that you may possess<MH3423> the land<MH776> where<MH4033> you live<MH4033> as<MH4033> a<MH4033> stranger<MH4033>, which<MH834> God<MH430> gave<MH5414> to Abraham<MH85>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/28-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>Then Isaac<MH3327> sent<MH7971> Jacob<MH3290> away<MH7971>, and he went<MH1980> to Paddan-aram<MH6307> to Laban<MH3837a>, son<MH1121> of Bethuel<MH1328a> the Aramean<MH761>, the brother<MH251> of Rebekah<MH7259>, the mother<MH517> of Jacob<MH3290> and Esau<MH6215>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/28-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>Now Esau<MH6215> saw<MH7200> that Isaac<MH3327> had blessed<MH1288> Jacob<MH3290> and sent<MH7971> him away<MH7971> to Paddan-aram<MH6307> to take<MH3947> to himself a wife<MH802> from there<MH8033>, <i>and that</i> when he blessed<MH1288> him he commanded<MH6680> him, saying<MH559>, “You shall not take<MH3947> a wife<MH802> from the daughters<MH1323> of Canaan<MH3667a>,” <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/28-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>and that Jacob<MH3290> had obeyed<MH8085> his father<MH1> and his mother<MH517> and had gone<MH1980> to Paddan-aram<MH6307>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/28-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>So Esau<MH6215> saw<MH7200> that the daughters<MH1323> of Canaan<MH3667a> displeased<MH7451a> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>his father<MH1> Isaac<MH3327>; <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/28-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>and Esau<MH6215> went<MH1980> to Ishmael<MH3458>, and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>married<MH3947, 802>, besides<MH5921> the wives<MH802> that he had, Mahalath<MH4258> the daughter<MH1323> of Ishmael<MH3458>, Abraham’s<MH85> son<MH1121>, the sister<MH269> of Nebaioth<MH5032>. <p class="hdg">Jacob’s Dream</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/28-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>Then Jacob<MH3290> departed<MH3318> from Beersheba<MH884> and went<MH1980> toward Haran<MH2771a>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/28-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>And he <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>happened<MH6293> upon<MH6293> a <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>particular place<MH4725> and spent<MH3885a> the<MH3885a> night<MH3885a> there<MH8033>, because<MH3588> the sun<MH8121> had set<MH935>; and he took<MH3947> one of the stones<MH68> of the place<MH4725> and made<MH7760> it a support<MH4763> for<MH4763> his head<MH4763>, and lay<MH7901> down<MH7901> in that place<MH4725>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/28-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>And he had<MH2492b> a<MH2492b> dream<MH2492b>, and behold<MH2009>, a ladder<MH5551> was set<MH5324> up<MH5324> on the earth<MH776> with its top<MH7218> reaching<MH5060> to heaven<MH8064>; and behold<MH2009>, the angels<MH4397> of God<MH430> were ascending<MH5927> and descending<MH3381> on it. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/28-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>Then behold<MH2009>, the LORD<MH3068> was standing<MH5324> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>above<MH5921> it and said<MH559>, “I am the LORD<MH3068>, the God<MH430> of your father<MH1> Abraham<MH85> and the God<MH430> of Isaac<MH3327>; the land<MH776> on which<MH834> you lie<MH7901> I will give<MH5414> to you and to your <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>descendants<MH2233>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/28-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>Your <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>descendants<MH2233> will also be like the dust<MH6083> of the earth<MH776>, and you will <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>spread<MH6555> out<MH6555> to the west<MH3220> and to the east<MH6924b>, and to the north<MH6828> and to the south<MH5045>; and in you and in your <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[l]</a></span>descendants<MH2233> shall all<MH3605> the families<MH4940> of the earth<MH127> be blessed<MH1288>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/28-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>Behold<MH2009>, I am with you and will keep<MH8104> you wherever<MH3605, 834> you go<MH1980>, and will bring<MH7725> you back<MH7725> to this<MH2088> land<MH127>; for I will not leave<MH5800a> you until<MH5704, 834> I have done<MH6213a> what<MH834> I have <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[m]</a></span>promised<MH1696> you.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/28-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>Then Jacob<MH3290> awoke<MH3364> from his sleep<MH8142> and said<MH559>, “The LORD<MH3068> is certainly<MH403> in this<MH2088> place<MH4725>, and I did not know<MH3045> it!” <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/28-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>And he was<MH3372a> afraid<MH3372a> and said<MH559>, “How<MH4100> awesome<MH3372a> is this<MH2088> place<MH4725>!
